The Kalos Starter Pokémon can be picked out of three Pokémon that the player will obtain in his or her journey which cannot be found in the Kalos Region itself. The Pokémon in question are:
- Chespin, the Grass type which evolves into Quilladin, then to Chesnaught which grants it the additional type of Fighting.
- Fennekin, the Fire type which evolves into Braixen, then to Delphox which grants it the additional type of Psychic.
- Froakie, the Water type which evolves into Frogadier, then to Greninja which grants it the additional type of Dark.

Pokémon X and Y[]
In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, the player, Shauna, and Serena/Calem receive their starter Pokémon: Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie in Aquacorde Town from Tierno, who was asked by Professor Sycamore to deliver them. The player's friend Shauna will choose the Pokémon with a type disadvantage to the player's choice, while the player's other friend Serena/Calem will choose the one with a type advantage to the player's choice. The choice of starter Pokémon affects which Pokémon Shauna will trade with the player after the player enters in the Hall of Fame. Shauna will trade the unevolved form of her starter Pokémon, having received it as an Egg.
The choice of starter Pokémon also determines which of the Legendary birds will roam the Kalos region after defeating the Pokémon League—if the player chooses Chespin, Articuno will appear, Zapdos will appear to those who chose Fennekin, and Moltres will appear to those that went with Froakie.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon[]
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, the Kalos starters' final forms can be caught in the wild via Island Scan on Poni Island.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet[]
The Kalos starters can be caught during event raids. They (along with all other starters) can also be unlocked as wild encounters in the Blueberry Academy Terarium.
Pokémon Legends Z-A[]
While the game is set in Kalos, the player is instead given the choice of Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile.

Like in the X and Y games, beginning Trainers who originated in Kalos can receive one of the first partner Pokémon in Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie from Professor Sycamore. However, there have been exceptions of receiving one of them from a school.
Main[]
- Ash reused the same pattern that he did in Hoenn of catching one starter Pokémon in Kalos, Froakie, who belong to several other Trainers before being abandoned or abandoning the Trainer. Also, like the Hoenn starter, Froakie evolved into a Frogadier then into Greninja. However, Ash has since released Greninja to not only protect Kalos but also to keep it safe from danger, after a villainous organization tried to use an ability they achieved together for their own gain.
- Serena got her Fennekin from Professor Sycamore as her starter, which has since evolved into Braixen then again into Delphox.
- Clemont obtained a Chespin in Kalos. It originally belonged to Professor Sycamore as a starter Pokémon for new Trainers.
- Goh caught a Froakie during his fifth visit to Kalos, but has since evolved into Frogadier.

- Sanpei started with a Froakie as it evolved into Frogadier then into Greninja.
- Aria started with a Fennekin as she evolved into Braixen then into Delphox.
- Mairin started out with a Chespin, which was nicknamed Chespie.
Minor[]
- Ash from a mirror world also has a Froakie.
- Serena from a mirror world also started with a Fennekin as her first Pokémon.
- Sanpei's eldest brother Ippei also raised a Froakie to a Frogadier then into a Greninja.
Manga[]
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Professor Sycamore sent a package to Trevor, which contained the three first partner Pokémon. In the disaster that befell the Vaniville Town, Fennekin was lost, but was later rasied by Malva into a Delphox. The rest were distributed to Y, who obtained Froakie (Croaky), while Chespin (Marisso) grew onto X - both of which evolved into Quilladin and Frogadier, and eventually into Chesnaught and Greninja.
After Team Flare's defeat, Trevor held onto Delphox obtained from Malva, and was eventually passed to Whitley from Unova region.
Trivia[]
- Generation VI was the first generation to introduce a new set of first partner Pokémon that do not follow the traditional "one quadrupedal starter and two bipedal starter" mix. Rather, there are two quadrupedal starters (Fennekin and Froakie) and one bipedal starter (Chespin).
- The Kalos Starters gain a secondary type advantage upon evolution: Chesnaught is part Fighting-type, Delphox is part Psychic-type, and Greninja is part Dark-type.
