The Illumina Phenomenon (Japanese: イルミナ現象, Hepburn: Irumina Genshou) is a phenomenon occurring in New Pokémon Snap. The phenomenon caused Pokémon and vegetation in the Lental region to gain a special glow.
History[]
The origin of the Illumina Phenomenon is ultimately unknown, though ruins found in Durice and Aurus indicate that Pokémen with an Illumina-based glow, known as "Illumina Pokémon", have been around for almost thousands of years.
A set of Pokémon known as Illumina Pokémon were responsible for protecting the Lental region from disaster caused by a meteor that descended onto the region. Professor Mirror hypothesizes that the meteor may have been the cause of the Illumina Phenomenon, though the aforementioned ruins contradict this.
Effect[]
When a Pokémon is under the effects of the Illumina Phenomenon, they give off a special glow. Taking a picture of a Pokémon while it is in the Illumina state will grant higher quality photos at the end of a course.
A special type of flower in the Lental region known as the Crystabloom can also be affected by the phenomenon, blooming with a special glow that also makes other Pokémon glow when they interact with it. Some Crystablooms can also be found naturally blooming and other Pokémon can be lured into its radius to make them glow.
Gameplay[]
Originally, Illumina state Pokémon and blooming Crystabloom flowers can only be photographed naturally. However, if the player snaps a photo of a blooming Crystabloom, Professor Mirror will give the player special items known as Illumina Orbs. These orbs can be thrown at Pokémon or Crystabloom flowers to make them glow and bloom, respectively.
After all of one island's courses are completed, the player is able to enter the island's Illumina Spot. These areas of each island hold one of the special Illumina Pokémon that constantly glow and can only be found in these specific spots. When hit by Illumina Orbs, the Illumina Pokémon will gain special glows and patterns that aren't normally seen. When the player traverses an Illmina Spot course at first, the Illumina Pokémon will be the only Pokémon present, though other Pokémon may appear once the course has been finished once.
