Late one night, when the guild members are sleeping, Chatot sneaks Wigglytuff a Perfect Apple that he requested, much to Chatot's frustration as Wiggyltuff makes him do the same thing every night. As he eats the apple, Wigglytuff accidentally drops a Defend Globe to his horror, but is relieved that it isn't damaged. Chatot is curious as to why Wigglytuff holds onto the item since it only affects Bug types, but Wigglytuff explains that it is tied to how he became an explorer, and begins to explain his origins of becoming an explorer.

Back when Wigglytuff was still an Igglybuff, he lived in a peaceful prairie with his parents. One day, his parents gave Igglybuff some Gummis and Igglybuff goes off to play with his friends, a Smoochum, Budew, and Wooper and shares the Gummis with them. Their playing is interrupted by the local bullies, Banette and Skorupi, but Igglybuff isn't bothered by their presence an even shares some of his Gummis with them. Igglybuff's friends are concerned about the bullies taking advantage of Igglybuff's kind nature and decide to speak to his parents.

That night, Igglybuff's parents discuss what they learned from Igglybuff's friends. Igglybuff's Papa isn't too worried about it as Igglybuff has a good heart and remembers a similar discussion they had before about him. One day, when Igglybuff and his Papa were traveling home after climbing a mountain, a storm came in and began causing landslides. The storm knocked over a large boulder right above them, but before he could be crushed, Igglybuff destroyed it with a strange power. Igglybuff's Papa theorizes that Igglybuff's power comes out when others are in need and is a reflection of his kindness and encourages Igglybuff's Mama to trust Igglybuff's judgement.

The next day, Banette and Skorupi decide to play explorer and go explore Murky Forest. Igglybuff's friends are too scared to go to Murkey Forest, because a monster is supposed to live there. However, Igglybuff agrees to go and the three go to Murky Forest. When they near of the forest, Skorupi recognizes the area is where the supposed monster lives, but Banette pushes the group ahead. The group reaches a cave at the end of the forest and both Banette and Skorupi start to get nervous and Banette, in an attempt to prove he's not scared, calls out into the cave where the monster is supposed to be. At first, nothing happens and it seems the monster isn't real, but before the group can return home, a growl begins coming from the cave. A voice comes from the cave shouts a the group to leave and Pokémon comes out and threatens to attack. Banette and Skorupi flee in terror and the Pokémon discovers the intruders were just a bunch of kids. The Pokémon notices Igglybuff is still there and threatens him to leave as well, but Igglybuff isn't the slightest bit scared. Igglybuff asks the Pokémon what they are doing in the forest and refuses to leave until his question is answered. The Pokémon, having been bluffing about attacking, is overcome by Igglybuff's persistence and takes him inside the cave.

Inside the cave is a secret base filled with supplies and the Pokémon introduces himself as Armaldo, a former explorer. Igglybuff asks Armaldo what exploring is and Armaldo explains its visiting amazing places, solving their mysteries, and finding treasure and fortune. Armaldo reveals he is currently trying to decipher a treasure map, but is having trouble understanding it. While Armaldo goes no about exploration, Igglybuff lights the map on fire with the flame from Armaldo's campfire. Armaldo takes the map back and douses the fire with his Water Gun. Although Armaldo is saddened his map was seemingly charred, Igglybuff reveals that there was a layer under the burned parts of the map. On the newly revealed layer of the map are directions to a place called Eastern Cave. Armaldo asks Igglybuff how did find out the map's secret so quickly and Igglybuff answers he figured it out when he saw how thick the map was and used the fire to burn away the outer layer. Armaldo is shocked at Igglybuff's incredible intuition and Igglybuff asks Armaldo to let him come with him to Eastern Cave. Armaldo is hesitant to leave his cave and explore Eastern Cave, for a seemingly different reason than he is retired, but agrees to go tomorrow with Igglybuff.

The next day, Igglybuff's friends to come play with them, but Igglybuff reveals he already has plans and he's going back to Murky Forest, to his friend's shock. On his way to the forest, Igglybuff meets with Banette and Skorupi, who learn that Igglybuff befriended the "monster" of the forest, to their surprise. Igglybuff travels to Armaldo's cave and Armaldo teaches him about the importance of preparation before entering a dungeon. When the two reach the end of the dungeon, Igglybuff tries to go on ahead, but Armaldo reels him in and points out the door is shut and the are many mechanisms in the room that can open it. Armaldo explains there may be several traps, but Igglybuff ignores him and uses his power to blast open the door. Armaldo is once again left in shock at Igglybuff's abilities and the two go on to the next room.

The two reach a treasure chamber with a giant chest. Armaldo opens the treasure chest and the treasure inside was a Defend Globe. Igglybuff is overjoyed at the find, despite not understanding its value, to Armaldo's bewilderment. Armaldo acknowledges to himself that Igglybuff has a natural talent for exploring and Igglybuff declares Armaldo an exploration master and asks to go on more explorations with him as his apprentice. Armaldo initially declines the offer, claiming its because he's retired, but Igglybuff remains determined, having felt a greater sense of excitement for exploring than anything else he's ever done. Armaldo contemplates to himself it would risky to keep exploring, but between Igglybuff's natural talent for exploring and his own feelings of excitement for exploring with Iggylbuff, Armaldo decides to accept Igglybuff's offer and makes him his apprentice.

Every day since then, Igglybuff would go on explorations with Armaldo and the two would have one great success after the other. A few months later, after another successful expedition, Armaldo is still surprised at Igglybuff's natural talent for exploration and acknowledges him as prodigy. On their way back from the expedition, the two discuss their next exploration to Fortune Ravine, where great treasure is said to lie. The two part ways for the day, and as Armaldo returns home, he is spotted by a Nidoking who seems to recognize him.

The next day, Igglybuff meets with Armaldo to head out to explorer Fortune Ravine, but Armaldo warns him it will be more difficult than the previous adventures. Iggly declares that the two of them can do anything they set to their minds to, and Armaldo agrees to go and the two set out for Fortune Ravine. Meanwhile. Igglybuff's friends visit Igglybuff's home to ask him to play with them, but his parents explain he isn't home. Smoochum asks Igglybuff's parents if Igglybuff has really been going to Murky Forest every day. Igglybuff's parents are shocked to hear this and Wooper asks Banette and Skorupi, who confirm Igglybuff has been going to Murky Forest and he has made friends with Armaldo. Suddenly, Nidoking arrives and asks Banette to describe Armaldo. Nidoking formally introduces himself as an explorer and reveals something that shocks everyone.

When the two reach the end of Fortune Ravine, the find a room with a door and four torches. Armaldo determines the key to unlocking the door is to extinguish the torches and does so with his water gun. However, this triggers a pit trap and the two discover they are in the middle of a Monster House. After defeating all the enemy Pokémon, the two find an exit that leads to an outside area. Igglybuff discovers an ancient ruin the distance and Armaldo realizes they are in an ancient city that lost to time. Before the two can explore further, Nidoking appears along with Officer Magnezonem and Igglybuff's friends and family. Smoochum reveals that Armaldo is really an outlaw and Nidoking explains he was hunting Armaldo. Magnezone confirms Armaldo is a "B" rank outlaw and the police have been searching the entire region for him. Igglybuff is disbelief over the revelation and Nidoking admonishes Armaldo for involving a kid in his schemes. Igglybuff protests he asked Armaldo to make him his apprentice and that he isn't a bad Pokémon. As Armaldo is about to be taken away, Igglybuff begins crying and the entire area begins to shake. Igglybuff prepares to unleash his power, but Armaldo stops him.

Armaldo asks for a minute to speak with Igglybuff, and Magnezone agrees to let him speak. Armaldo admits he is an outlaw and during his run from the law, he took residence in Murky Forest. He also started the rumor about there being a monster in there to scare everyone away so he wouldn't be discovered. Armaldo couldn't bring himself to tell the truth and tells Igglybuff to become an explorer for his sake. As Armaldo about to be taken away, he admits to Igglybuff he enjoyed their explorations, despite the risk of him being discovered, and it was Igglybuff who showed him the joy of exploring and gives him his thanks. Armaldo explains he must answer for his actions, but once he's done that, he will become an explorer for real and hopes he go can exploring with Igglybuff again. As Armaldo is taken away, he throws the Defend Orb the two found on their first exploration to Igglybuff.

Back in present, Wigglytuff finishes explaining his starting point for exploring and Chatot asks what became of Armaldo. Wiggly answers that many things happened with Armaldo, because he is still Wigglytuff's master. However, Wigglytuff decides to save those stories for another day, but he reveals that he thinks of Armaldo whenever he looks at the Defend Globe, for it's how his story of becoming an explorer began and even though there are outlaws, truly Pokémon don't exist anywhere.
