Hokulani Observatory is an observatory on Ula'ula Island in the Alola region. It is the location of the Trial of Sophocles, the fifth trial challenged by the player character.

In this area, the player can bring Deoxys as there are meteorites which change its form.

Trial

In this trial, the player character must help Sophocles activate his special invention, in order to attract the Totem Vikavolt. This will require completing an audio quiz, in which sounds are played, and the player character must guess which events these sounds are associated with.

After answering the question correctly, a Pokémon will appear, with the last question summoning the Totem.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, this trial has changed somewhat. The player character must now go out into the courtyard, initially finding three of the Observatory's nine Charjabug. After this, they must be placed on a special platform to attract the Totem, and rotated specifically, with the final attempt forming a 'Z' shape. From this, the Totem will appear, which is this time a Togedemaru.

From completing the trial, you receive two Z-Crystals: an Electrium Z from Sophocles, and a Steelium Z from Molayne. Molayne also gives an item called the "Professor's Mask", as a reference to Kukui also being the Masked Royal.
