The Hoenn Starter Pokémon are three Pokémon of which the player character obtains one by choice upon starting their journey which cannot be found in the Hoenn region itself. The Pokémon in question are:
- Treecko, the Grass-type which evolves into Grovyle then to Sceptile.
- Torchic, the Fire-type which evolves into Combusken which grants it the additional type of Fighting, then to Blaziken.
- Mudkip, the Water-type which evolves into Marshtomp which grants it the additional type of Ground, then to Swampert.

Games[]
Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald, Pokémon Omega Ruby, and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]
In Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald, Pokémon Omega Ruby, and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, after Professor Birch is rescued from a wild PoochyenaRSORAS or ZigzagoonE, he allows the player character to keep the chosen Pokémon of rescue with the choice between Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip.
The player character's neighbor, Brendan or May, already has their first partner Pokémon, which always possesses the type advantage. By the end of Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, and Pokémon Emerald, it seems that the player character's nominal rival, the son or daughter of Professor Birch, has stopped being a Trainer, and Wally is the true rival, facing the player character before they can leave Victory Road and staying there to have rematches with the player character later. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Brendan or May's role as an NPC is slightly expanded, acting in a post-credits battle in which they gain access to Mega Evolution for their first partner Pokémon.
Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver[]
In Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver, Steven Stone offers one of these Pokémon to the player character upon Red's defeat.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon[]
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, the middle stages of the Hoenn first partner Pokémon can be caught in the wild via Island Scan on Akala Island.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield[]
In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, both the middle and final stages can be caught in Dynamax Adventures in the Crown Tundra.
Anime[]
Like in the Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games, beginning Trainers who originated in Hoenn can receive one of the first partner Pokémon in Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip from Professor Birch. However, there have been exceptions of receiving one of them from a Pokémon Center or school.
Main[]
- May received her Torchic from Professor Birch as her first partner Pokémon, which evolved into a Combusken, then into Blaziken.
- Ash caught Treecko; it evolved into Grovyle, then into Sceptile.
- Brock caught Mudkip, which has since evolved into Marshtomp.
Recurring[]
- Harrison started with Torchic; it evolved into Combusken, then into Blaziken.
- Nurse Joy from Slateport City took in a Torchic as it evolved into Combusken and could't be picked as a first Pokémon for new Trainers.
- Morrison started with Mudkip as it evolved into a Marshtomp then into Swampert.
- Tyson began his journey with Treecko as it evolved into a Grovyle then into Sceptile.
- Sawyer started out with Treecko; it evolved into Grovyle, then into Sceptile.
Minor[]
- Nicholai started with Mudkip, which has since evolved into Marshtomp.
- Stephanie began her journey with Mudkip and her father decided to take Treecko.
Manga[]
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Sapphire got Torchic from her father, Professor Birch. The latter was being assaulted by Mightyena, so Ruby, who was passing by, took Mudkip to battle them. While he was not impressed by Mudkip, Ruby later found it to be a valuable asset for his Contests he took part in. As Ruby and Sapphire took a bet with each other, the two Pokémon developed, evolving to their final forms. Treecko was reserved for a different Trainer, but during a flood it went missing and was found by Wally, who trained it into a Grovyle. Yet again, the blast from Rayquaza caused Grovyle to be lost, and it was later discovered by Emerald, who took in his team as a Sceptile.
With the discovery of Mega Stones, all Trainers can Mega Evolve their first partner Pokémon.
Trivia[]
- The Hoenn first partner Pokémon and the Kanto first partner Pokémon are the only first partner Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution.
