Grovyle Dimensional Scream

Grovyle as first seen

At first, Grovyle is believed to be a villain, supposedly trying to steal the Time Gears to cause the planet's paralysis. He steals the first from Treeshroud Forest without resistance. The Time Gear of Fogbound Lake is stolen next after defeating Uxie and the Groudon illusion. After that, he steals the Time Gear guarded by Mesprit, who was weakened by taking part in a battle against the player and its partner. Finally, he defeats Azelf, intending to steal his Time Gear, but Azelf covers the lake in crystal to prevent him from getting it. The player's team confronts Grovyle, but despite their best efforts, they are defeated by him (while it is possible to defeat Grovyle in the battle, the cutscene is the same regardless). He nearly kills the player's partner, but Dusknoir, a "famous explorer" from the future who is trying to stop Grovyle as well, chases him off. Dusknoir finally captures him, but before taking Grovyle back to the future, he takes the player and partner with him. In the future, Dusknoir has his Sableye attempt to execute the player, their partner, and Grovyle, but the trio excaped thanks to Grovyle's quick thinking. The three find a Shiny Celebi, who Grovyle used to travel into the past in the first place, so the trio can return to the past. However, Dusknoir, his Sableye, and Dusknoir's master, Primal Dialga, arrive to stop them. It is then that Grovyle learns that the player is in fact, the human partner he traveled back in time with.

Back in the past, Grovyle reveals that he and the player, as a human, were trying to solve the mystery of the paralyzed planet. After traveling to the past, the player and Grovyle got separated, with the player losing memory and turning into a Pokémon, and Grovyle attempting to find the Time Gears. Recovering the Time Gears was meant to stop Temporal Tower from collapsing, which, if collapses, sends Dialga into a primal rage, and paralyzes the planet. Dusknoir, as opposed to stopping Grovyle from freezing time, had been sent back in time by Primal Dialga to ensure time would freeze. Grovyle, the player, and the partner recover the Time Gear of Treeshroud Forest, noticing that time had already stopped even with the Time Gear still in place. Grovyle heads out alone to recover the other Gears, and said that it was much easier due to the player's team revealing the truth about Grovyle and Dusknoir, and the Lake Guardians coorperating with him. Finally, having all the necessary Time Gears, they head to the Hidden Land which leads to Temporal Tower. However, they are confronted by Dusknoir. After finally defeating him and his Sableye, Dusknoir reveals to the player that if the mission is successful, all Pokémon from the future will be erased from history. Grovyle confirms this and intercepts an attack by Dusknoir meant for the player. He is then forced to send himself and Dusknoir back to the future, leaving the Time Gears with the player and partner. After time has been restored, he, as well as Dusknoir, the player, and Primal Dialga, become erased from time, but the player is later restored by Dialga's time warping powers as a thanks to the bravery of the now-heartbroken partner.

In the Future of Darkness

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, the Special Episode In the Future of Darkness shows that Dusknoir, Grovyle, Primal Dialga, and the Sableye survive, but are trapped in the dark future. When he awakens, Grovyle decides to confront Primal Dialga to prevent him from interfering with the mission to change history. Before he leaves for Barren Valley, he has a conversation with Dusknoir about why he fights to change the future, even it means he will disappear. When Grovyle reaches the end of the valley, Dusknoir catches up to him and prepares to fight him, but they are both attacked by the Sableye. After fending them off, the two are forced to work together and learn that Dusknoir has been replaced by a new crafty henchman.

The two travel to the ruins of Temporal Tower and discover Primal Dialga isn't there. Grovyle determines Primal Dialga went after Celebi to use the Passage of Time to send the new henchman to the present and the two travel to Dusk Forest. When the two arrive at the meeting place where Celebi lives, they are ambush by the complete pack of Sableye. After defeating the Sableye they question one of them and he reveals Celebi fled to Frozen Island.

The two warp to Frozen Island with the help of some Porygon and search for Celebi. During their search, Dusknoir saves Grovyle from a falling piece of ice controlled by a pack of Glalie and a Mamoswine and the two fight off the Ice Pokemon. Grovyle and Dusknoir then rest so the latter can heal from the injury he sustained protecting Grovyle. During this time, the two have a deep conversation about life during which Grovyle express his belief that even if he disappears, his spirit will live on forever through his actions and how he lived. When Dusknoir recovers, the travel through Icicle Forest and find Celebi being trapped by Spritiomb's paralysis spell. When Grovyle tries to rescue Celebi, he becomes trapped by the electricity surging through the ice pillars. Dusknoir then reveals everything was a ploy to get Grovyle into the where the electricity was strongest and have his spirit melted away. Once this is done Dusknior will inhabit Grovyle's body and use it to attack the Player and Partner in the past. Dusknoir gloats that the reason Grovyle lost was because he trusted him, but Grovyle declares he still trusts Dusknoir. He reveals that during their travels, he sensed Dusknoir's hatred vanish and asks him what he really wants to keep living in the hopeless future. Grovyle's words create doubt in Dusknoir's resolve and he ultimately saves Grovyle.

When Primal Dialga's attack is interrupted by the resumption time, Grovyle, Dusknoir, and Celebi follow him to prevent him from attacking the Passage of Time and potentially damaging time. At this time, Grovyle notice light coming from his body and realizes he is beginning disappear, but he keeps this to him. After confronting and defeating Primal Dialga, the Pokémon of the future begin to disappear. Before he disappears, Dusknoirs asks Grovyle if he made his spirit shine and Grovyle confirms this as Dusknoir disappears content. Grovyle and Celebi begin to disppear, they share a moment watching the sunrise. Grovyle later awakens and discover the Pokémon of the future are all alive and Dialga, restored to his true self, guess it was the work of being higher than himself. Grovyle then sends a message on the wind to the Player and Partner that they will rebuild the world of the future and most importantly, they are all alive.

Personality

Grovyle is a powerful and skilled warrior. He's also willing to do anything to alter the dark future in which he lived, even if it meant sacrificing himself or outright killing others. Before the time-travelling incident, he considers the player his best, closest friend, and is thus protective towards the player, evidenced by taking a hit from Dusknoir that was meant for the player. Grovyle continues to consider the player and the partner his friends, as evidenced by when the three of them camp at Sharpedo Bluff the first night after they return from the future.

Trivia

  • Likely due to Grovyle swiftly knocking out the player and the partner in the post-battle cutscene, winning the boss battle against Grovyle is optional. Even if the player loses this fight, the story continues normally, unlike most boss battles which must be won in order to advance the story.
