Grafaiai (Japanese: タギングル, HepburnTaginguru) is a Poison/Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Grafaiai is a small Pokémon resembling a lemur. Its body is primarily dark grey or black. Its legs have two toes and possesses large eyes lacking pupils that are gradient from green to yellow. It has long arms that end in colorful fingers dripping in poison. It's tail is long and fluffy, possessing a single strip in the middle.

Behavior[]

Grafaiai is a moody Pokémon that often focuses on surrounding details. It is a nocturnal Pokémon that prefers to roam alone. They are also very territorial and will usually get into fights when other Pokémon come across their living space or will attempt to paint over the territorial markings of other Grafaiai. When nighttime approaches, Grafaiai licks its fingers to cover them with poison saliva, then uses them to draw paint-like patterns on various surfaces to mark its territory.

Grafaiai will also utilize its venomous saliva in battle. It will spit at opponents or slash at them with its poison-tipped fingers.

Each Grafaiai has its own signature pattern, which it will paint over and over throughout its life.

Natural Abilities[]

Grafaiai are able to create colorful patterns on various surfaces. These patterns usually come in circle or ring shapes, largely resembling targets, and come in a wide variety of colors. The color of this paint depends on Grafaiai's diet. It is also shown to seemingly sneeze this substance as well, which acts much like spray paint. The paint also gives off a fragrant scent, acting as a trap for Bug Pokémon, which are paralyzed upon coming into contact with the paint. Grafaiai later collects these paralyzed Pokémon by dawn.

When Grafaiai senses danger, its venom is able to become more concentrated. This makes it much more potent, making it so that victims are immobilized for three whole days if they come into contact with this boosted toxin.

Evolution[]

Grafaiai evolves from Shroodle at level 28.

    Trivia[]

    • Grafaiai was first teased in a series of Tweets by the Pokémon Company.
      • The first Tweet featured four different patterns in a wooded area, photos of which were taken by a photographer in Paldea.
      • The second Tweet featured three more patterns alongside blurry glimpses of what Grafaiai looked like. This Tweet also revealed Grafaiai's name.
      • The third and final Tweet featured a video of a photographer documenting his findings on Grafaiai. If the video is canon, it would most likely take place before the events of the main game given the absence of the Navi Squad.

    Origin[]

Grafaiai seems to be based on an aye-aye, a species of lemur known for their long finger and nocturnal nature. Their tendency to paint on trees using their elongated finger appears to be inspired by graffiti tagging or finger painting, and might also be based on territorial scent marking or foraging methods used by real-world aye-ayes. Its venomous saliva may make Grafaiai also based on the slow loris. Its black and white coloration as well as the design of its tail may also call to mind the ring-tailed lemur.

Grafaiai might also draw some inspiration from various youth subculture, such as punk, rap, and hip hop; this is evident in Grafaiai's spiky hair (a nod to the punk hairstyle), facial markings that resemble a paint mask (which is used to prevent inhaling paint fumes), and black parts of its body that resemble a hoodie.

The various paint rings that it leaves on trees appear to reference the Oma forest, a piece of art involving multiple painted tree trunks found in Basque Country, Spain.

    Etymology[]

Grafaiai appears to come from "graffiti" and "aye-aye".
