Gigalith (Japanese: ギガイアス Gigaiasu) is a Rock-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology

Physiology

Gigalith is a massive boulder-like Pokémon that resembles a golem and a stalagmite. Its entire body is made of deep bluish gray rock. It has bright red crystals protruding from all over its body. On its face, two sharp crystals protrude from the sides of its mouth like tusks. Its four limbs are bulky and powerfully-built. It has fierce-looking deep-set yellow and red eyes.

The Shiny variation of a Gigalith has a more purplish hue for its body. Its crystals are now turquoise instead of red.

Behavior

Gigalith usually inhabits underground tunnels and caves. It compresses energy inside its internal core. The expelled energy is capable of destroying a large mountain and the recoil from the attack results in deep gashes forming all over Gigalith's body.

Gigalith is able to contain the solar rays it absorbed within the crystals sticking out of its body and shoot them out of its mouth. However, it is unable to use this ability during rainy weather or at night.

Because of its immense strength and sturdy body, Gigalith is popular among construction workers.

Special Abilities

Gigalith has access to the abilities Sturdy, Sand Stream, and Sand Force. Sturdy allows Gigalith to survive an attack and hang on with one HP remaining. Sand Stream allows Gigalith to summon a sandstorm that lasts for 5 whole turns. Sand Force, which is a hidden ability, slightly increases the damage output of Gigalith's Rock, Ground, and Steel-type moves during a sandstorm.

Evolution

Gigalith is the evolved form of Boldore by trade. Gigalith is the final evolution of Roggenrola.

Appearances

Anime

Gigalith made its Anime debut in the episode Ash Versus the Champion! where it has gone berserk and wrecked havoc within a town square (which Ash and his friends happen to be visiting). Alder confronted the Compressed Pokemon and managed to subdue it with his bare hands as well as finding out the reason behind Gigalith's blind attacks (a large splinter was wedged inside one of Gigalith's feet).

Another Gigalith appeared in the episode Strong Strategy Steals the Show! under the ownership of Kenton. It was easily defeated by Cameron's Riolu.

Trivia

  • Gigalith was first seen along with Reuniclus and Gothitelle on Oha Suta on June 28, 2010. Later it was seen in battle against Blitzle, Darmanitan and Drilbur. On the Oha Suta episode of July 22, 2010, it was then revealed to be called Gigaiasu. It was later shown in detail at the Pokémon BW: Search for a Legend tour on August 7, 2010. It was also appeared on the September issue of Coro Coro on August 9, 2010. The Romanization of the name Gigaiasu was later revealed to be Gigalith.
  • Gigalith is the only pure third stage Rock-type.
  • Gigalith shares some similarities with Golem:
    • Both are part of a three-stage evolutionary line and evolve from their middle stage through trade.
    • Both are Rock-type although Gigalith is single-typed while Golem is dual-typed (part Ground as a Kantonian Golem and part Electric as an Alolan Golem).
    • Both are in the Mineral Egg Group.

Origin

Gigalith is likely based on a boulder-like golem, mixed with traits of a stalagmite and a geode. It also has some attributes of an arthropod (similar to a spider).

Etymology

English: Gigalith's name may have been derived from ギガス Gigas, a term used to describe a race of chthonic (Earth-associated) giants, and the word "monolith", a large single upright block of stone.

Japanese: Gigaiath (Gigaiasu in Romanji) is a combination of ギガス Gigas and Gaia, the Greek Goddess who represents the Earth. It also may be a play on the word Goliath.
