At one point, it became friends with the Ghost of Maiden's Peak and promised to ensure her legend's survival and find her lost lover. Pokémon the Series: The Beginning[]
Gastly made its presence in the form of the Maiden's Ghost before revealing its true form to the viewers.
When Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket came to Maiden's Peak, it allowed Brock and James to see it (although Pikachu was able to catch a glimpse of its true form before it disappears) and later brought them to the Maiden's shrine. After a failed attempt at taking over Brock and James with its charm, due to being interrupted by Ash and co. (especially after Jessie shoots it with a bazooka), it resorted to using violence by summoning skull ghosts. It is soon revealed to be a Gastly by Ash's Pokédex. Impressed that Ash figured out who it was, it confesses that it was both the maiden's ghost and the old woman that they met before as it returns to its true form, merging with the skull ghosts in the process.
Ash and Team Rocket challenged it to a fight, sending Pikachu out first. Gastly warns them that it has powers that other Gastly do not have, but nevertheless accepts the challenge. It starts by scaring Pikachu off by taking the form of a mousetrap, which doesn't faze Meowth, so Gastly turns into a ball of yarn to distract him. Jessie sends out Ekans, and Gastly turns into a mongoose to scare it away. James then has Koffang use Poison Gas, but Gastly, still in mongoose form but also wearing a gasmask, defeats Koffang by stomping it into the ground. Ash sends out Charmander next, but it is scared off when Gastly becomes a fire extinguisher and sprays water at it. After it returns to normal, it asks what they'll try next. Frustrated, Ash tries using Squirtle and Bulbasaur at the same time. Amused, Gastly changes into a giant Venusaur and Blastoise, and for further amusement, combines them together to form a hybridized Pokémon, scaring away Squirtle and Bulbasaur. This forces them to admit defeat due to how powerful it is, but Misty then tries combating it using a cross, garlic, a stake, and a hammer, which annoys it as it isn't a vampire. It disappeared after the sunrise as it hated sunlight. Later, while riding a boat and changing from the Maiden's Ghost and the old woman before returning to its true form, it was thanked by the real maiden's ghost for keeping her legend alive, and it vowed to continue finding her lover.
