Gardenia serves as the Gym Leader for Eterna City. Gardenia specializes in Grass-type Pokémon, and holds the Forest Badge for the trainers that defeat her. She is also known as a "Master of Vivid Plant Pokémon". She loves Grass-Type Pokémon and as such, has a lot of plants in her gym. Gardenia is also an expert on Grass-Type Pokémon.
Appearance[]
Gardenia has brown eyes and short half-brown, half-black hair. She wears a black long-sleeved crop top that shows her midriff under a green cloak with a black "X" mark in the center. She wears brown knee-length khaki shorts and a black belt with a silver buckle around her waist. Finally, she wears green boots with black laces.
Personality[]
Gardenia is a quirky and friendly trainer, who gets giddy whenever she comes across Grass-type Pokémon. Although she has a bubbly personality, her past may suggest she's a lot more complex than initially believed. Her connection with the Old Chateau has yet remained a mystery.
Etymology[]
The name Gardenia comes from "garden" or could literally be "gardenia", a type of flower.
Her Japanese name, Natane, comes from 菜 (na, greens), 種 (tane, seed) and 菜種 (natane, canola plant).

Diamond and Pearl[]
Gardenia first appeared in the first Generation IV games as the Eterna City Gym Leader, specializing in Grass Pokémon. The player first meets her in Eterna Forest, outside of the mansion. Her Gym is filled with plants, and trainers that challenge her must search for, and find all of the Gym members before they can face her. Upon defeating her, she will reach into her waistband and reward the player with the Forest Badge and TM86 (Grass Knot).

- In the game, she has a fear of Ghost Type Pokémon. She says "What if there is a Grass/Ghost Pokémon?". This type combination appeared two generations later in Generation VI with the debut of Phantump, Trevenant, Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist. The next generation, Generation VII, would also introduce Decidueye and Dhelmise who also have the Grass and Ghost-type combination.
- Gardenia's Cherrim is under-leveled at Level 20, as Cherubi evolves at Level 25.
