The Galar Starter Pokémon can be picked out of three Pokémon that the player character will obtain in their journey which cannot be found in the Galar region itself. The Pokémon in question are:
- Grookey, the Grass type which evolves into Thwackey, then to Rillaboom.
- Scorbunny, the Fire type which evolves into Raboot, then to Cinderace.
- Sobble, the Water type which evolves into Drizzile, then to Inteleon.

Pokémon Sword and Shield[]
In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, Leon, the Champion of the Pokémon League (Galar), offers the player a choice of Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble as their first Partner Pokémon. The players' rival Hop (who is Leon's younger brother) will choose the Pokémon with a type disadvantage to the player's choice. Leon takes the remaining Pokémon into his care, eventually using its final form in the Championship Match against the player.
In the Isle of Armor, the player has the option of giving their final form starter Pokémon Max Soup, giving them a Gigantamax Factor and allowing them to enter their Gigantamax form in battle. Hop will use his starter's Gigantamax form in the Galarian Star Tournament.

Unlike the Sword and Shield games, it is unknown if any beginning Trainer who originated in Galar can receive one of the first partner Pokémon in Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble from Leon. However, a school was shown to give one of them to a beginning Trainer who is a student.

- Goh caught three of the Galar region starter Pokémon, Scorbunny, who became his first Pokémon, Sobble and Grookey. However, like Ash's Johto starters, two out of the three evolved. Also, like Ash's Sinnoh starters, the two out of the three are fully evolved, as Scorbunny evolved into Raboot then later becomes a Cinderace and Sobble has evolved into Drizzile then into Inteleon.

- Leon the Galar Champion raised all three of the Galar starters, as he raised a Grookey to a Thwackey then into a Rillaboom, Scorbunny to a Raboot then into a Cinderace and Sobble to a Drizzile then into Inteleon.

- Jacqueline started with Sobble as it evolved into Drizzile then into Inteleon.
- Goh from another world also started with Scorbunny as his first Pokémon and evolved it all the way to Cinderace.
Manga[]
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Casey and Henry both obtained a Scorbunny (nicknamed Bit) and a Grookey (Stickyn). The third first partner, Sobble, was given to Marvin from Professor Magnolia, and he named it Tearie.
The three later evolved into their second forms - Raboot, Thwackey and Drizzile.

- The Galar starters and Johto Starters stay pure Grass, Fire and Water types throughout their evolutions.
- Additionally, the Galar starters and the Kanto starters are the only set of starters capable of Gigantamaxing.
- The Galar Starters are the only Regional Starter Pokémon in the anime that Ash hasn't caught or owned.
