I'm Flannery, and I'm in charge here! Uh... You'd better not underestimate me just 'cause I've only been Leader a short time! With the skills inherited from my grandfather, I'm gonna, uh, demonstrate the hot moves we've honed in this land! Haiyaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Flannery is the Gym Leader of Lavaridge Town in the Hoenn region. She had only recently become the town's Gym Leader at the time of the player's challenge and specializes in using Fire-type Pokémon. Flannery has an unnamed grandfather who was formerly the Gym Leader of Lavaridge Town, so Flannery likely became his successor.

Appearance[]

Flannery is a slender, medium height girl with long, straight crimson red hair that is tied up in a high, spiky ponytail with a blue band with a side fringe at the front, and crimson red eyes.

Generation III[]

She wears a short black T-shirt with a red fire emblem on it, exposing her belly button, plain light blue jeans with a red belt, and black and gray colored shoes. Flannery is shown with pink hair in her overworld sprite. Her overworld sprite in Pokémon Emerald Version was edited from Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version to have her side fringe partially cover her right eye, consistent with her battle sprite.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]

She wears a red bandeau with yellow flames, exposing her belly button, and a black sleeveless tie front crop top over it. She also has on blue flared light blue jeans with red Xs down the sides with a white karate belt. Her shoes are colored as black and red.

Personality[]

Flannery is impulsive and spirited, and is inexperienced since she hasn't been a Gym Leader for long. Flannery's lack in practice is compensated with charisma and ambition. In her dialogue prior to being battled in the Generation III games, Flannery is seen improvising intimidating rhetoric towards the player, but after losing to them in a battle, she admits fault.

Etymology[]

The name Flannery comes from "flame" or "flare".

Her Japanese name, Asuna, could originate from "ash" and 翌檜 (asunaro, a genus of trees) as most Gym Leaders follow plant-based names.

Generation III[]

Flannery's placement in Lavaridge Town Gym in Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version

Flannery is fought in the Lavaridge Town Gym. To reach Flannery within her gym, the player must jump into hot springs which spout and drop them between the first and second floors of the gym. Many springs are already occupied by Pokémon Trainers specialized in the use of Fire-type Pokémon like Flannery.

When Flannery is defeated by the player in a Pokémon battle, she rewards them with the Heat Badge and the TM Overheat. She notes that the player fights similarly to Norman.

In Pokémon Emerald Version only, Flannery's Pokémon are all female during the first battle, but in all the rematches her Pokémon are all male.

Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2[]

Flannery is fought twice in the Pokémon World Tournament. She and the other Gym Leaders from the Hoenn region are each battled during the Hoenn Leaders Tournament, then later again in the World Leaders Tournament. Being a specialist in Fire-type Pokémon, Flannery is grouped with Blaine and Chili as the Fire experts in the Type Expert Tournament, where she uses the same party as in the World Tournament.

Flannery's battle sprite starts in the same position as Candice's.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]

Like the Generation III games, Flannery is the Gym Leader of Lavaridge Town and will reward the player character with the Heat Badge and the TM Overheat if they defeat her.

After catching or defeating Groudon (in Omega Ruby) or Kyogre (in Alpha Sapphire), Flannery can be found in the Scorched Slab, searching for the Fire-type Legendary Pokémon Heatran. Thinking that she is not prepared to move further forward, she leaves and heads back to Lavaridge.
