Fishing is a sport in real life that involves catching fish, typically from using a fishing rod or fishing net and with the help of a fishing bait. In the world of Pokémon, fishing is a sport done by Pokémon Trainers as a method for encountering Pokémon in bodies of water.
Description[]
Core series[]
In the core series, fishing is usually done with specialized fishing rods. There is an entire Trainer Class dedicated to the sport of fishing, known as Fishers, which appear to use regular fishing rods.
In earlier generations, the player can use one of three types of fishing rods for fishing at bodies of water. Each type of fishing rod affects which Pokémon is fished out, from weakest to strongest: Old Rod, the Good Rod, and the Super Rod. While fishing, the player takes out their fishing rod for a few seconds, during which they may either encounter a Pokémon or nothing. When a Pokémon hooks itself to the rod, an exclamation mark appears over the player, who must press the A button to reel it in and engage in battle. Fishing can be repeated as many times as desired, provided the player has at least one of the three fishing rods. As of Generation III, the player can do fishing while surfing. In Generation V, the Super Rod is the only fishing rod available, let alone a method for fishing in general.
Starting from the Generation VII games, the player uses only a regular Fishing Rod to fish.
Anime[]
In Pokémon the Series: The Beginning and Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver, Misty designed a unique fishing lure designed in her likeness, titled Misty's special lure.
