The Kangaskhan Kid (Japanese: ガルーラのこもりうた, HepburnKangaskhan's Lullaby) is the 34th episode of Pocket Monsters of Pocket Monsters (1997 series), Season 1 of Pokémon the Series, and Pokémon: Indigo League of Pokémon the Series: The Beginning.

Synopsis[]

On their way to a safari zone teeming with Pokémon, our heroes walk right into the middle of a jungle. Without knowing they are in a region in which Pokémon are protected, Ash tries to capture a Chansey and is arrested by Jenny, the safari ranger. After talking with the ranger, Ash is released, but not before he learns that there are Pokémon poachers in the area. Our heroes accompany the ranger into the forest, pursuing the poachers. Within the jungle, a young man leads a pack of Kangaskhan. His name is Tommy and no one knows the secret of his childhood.[1]

"They Pokémon or peoples?" - Tommy
"They're peoples. I mean people." - Misty

Trivia[]

  • "Who's that Pokémon?:" Kangaskhan (JP; US)
  • This episode's storyline is loosely based on Tarzan the Ape Man. Coincidentally, Pokemon: The First Movie and Disney's Tarzan were both released in 1999.
  • The vehicle Officer Jenny and the heroes rode on heavily resembles a Willys MB/Ford GPW.

Mistakes[]

  • During the scene where Tangela walks by Ash and his friends, Ash's Japanese voice can be heard.

Dub differences[]

  • In the original Japanese airing, when Ash and the gang encounter Tommy, the gag of Misty telling Tommy to apologize was changed for the overseas dubbed English version. In the original Japanese version, Tommy spaces out and stares at Misty's breasts, and she asks "What's up?" Tommy replies by saying "Can I drink from your breast?", making Misty very angry as she hits him, and says "How dare you say that?" For the overseas dubbed English version, the shot of Misty's breasts was cut, and he asks "You people or Pokémon?" She gets very angry, hits him and says "I'm a person, you creep!" However she still blushes in the English version.
