Munchlax (Japanese: ゴンベ, Hepburn: Gonbe) (MUNCH-lax^[1]) is a Normal-type Baby Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Munchlax has a plump, teal-colored body with a cream-colored spot on its chest. Its round head is teal in the top half and cream on the bottom half. It has big, round eyes and large pointy ears. It has five-fingered hands and cream-colored feet with three clawed toes.

Behavior[]

Unlike Snorlax, Munchlax are very active Pokémon. They spend almost all of their time walking or running -or more accurately, waddling- around in search of food. They eat their own body weight in food every day, and they rarely chew food before swallowing. They hide leftovers in their fur to save for later, but often forget about them, leaving the morsels to rot on their bodies.

Consequently, wild Munchlax frequently smell of decomposing refuse. They will still gladly consume these spoiled items, however, as they can eat just about anything without experiencing any ill effects thanks to their robust stomachs. In fact, a Munchlax sharing its possibly-rotten stored food with someone is a sure sign of trust. Despite how much they eat, Munchlax rarely are ever full; they constantly are looking for more to eat.

Occasionally, they can be found wandering around houses; they will squeeze their way through small openings or windows to eat food left out for pets. Some people have even reported Munchlax raiding pantries, cabinets, and refrigerators in search of food, eating everything they can find in the process. Munchlax hate confrontation and will flee at the first sign of danger, though, so they are thankfully easy to scare off.

Any Munchlax is known for its very high appetite and eats anything edible.

Evolution[]

Munchlax evolves into Snorlax with a high friendship level.

Game Info[]

In Pokémon Black and White Version in Driftveil City a man will trade the player a Munchlax for a Cinccino. They can also breed Snorlax with Full Incense attached.

In the anime, Munchlax first appeared in Destiny Deoxys, where it evolved into a Snorlax to stay afloat in the Block Bot flood, making it the first Generation IV Pokémon to appear in the anime. May currently owns a Munchlax, which she captured in Berry, Berry Interesting. A trainer named Kylie owns a Munchlax, which was seen in A Full Course Tag Battle!.

Manga[]

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Diamond owns a Munchlax, which was his first Pokémon and is often seen eating with him. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!, a Collector, Ruin Maniac, Psychic and Galactic Grunt are all searching for a Munchlax, which is said to be very rare. Its Pickup ability takes Hareta's Pokédex but Munchlax returns it later.

Despite being a Generation IV Pokémon, it appeared in the anime during the Generation III era.
Munchlax is one of the 16 Pokémon to be made into a puppet in Japan.
In Super Smash Bros., Munchlax is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, instead of using a move, it uses its Pickup Ability to eat dropped items.
- It is, so far, the only Poké Ball Pokémon in the Super Smash Bros. series to utilize its Ability rather than a move or other action.
Munchlax is tied with Shuckle and Pyukumuku for the lowest base speed at 5.

Origin[]

Munchlax's evolution, Snorlax, is a caricature of Game Freak employee Kōji Nishino.^[2] Therefore, Munchlax is presumably also based on him. However, Munchlax overall may be based on a baby bear as shown by its eating habits and its evolution also being based on a bear. Its eating habits are also reminiscent of bears usually eating lots of food before going into hibernation. The spot on its chest also slightly resembles a bib.

Its Japanese name possibly coming from the name "Gonbē" may also imply Munchlax is based on a village child with its lower fur resembling tattered clothing.

Etymology[]

Munchlax's name is a combination of munch and relax.

Gonbe is a portmanteau of Kabigon (Snorlax) and "baby." It can also come from Gonbē, a common Japanese name given to peasants long ago, as they may have been accepting of food similarly to how Munchlax often overeats.
