From your perspective, it must seem that I am doing something terrible. I don't expect you to understand. But I must provide the Galar region with limitless energy to ensure everlasting prosperity. It is my purpose, my duty, my destiny!

Rose beginning to explain his motives, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield

Chairman Rose is the main antagonist of Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. He is the charismatic chairman of the Galar pokemon League and the president of the corporation Macro Cosmos, as well the de-facto head of Galar. Charismatic, powerful and popular, Rose is a skilled Pokémon trainer with the objective of use the power of Eternatus for gave Galar unlimited energy, solving the energetic problem that, according to him, will be a reality in circa 1000 years.

He uses Steel-type Pokémon.

Chairman Rose concept art

Concept artwork of Chairman Rose.

Chairman Rose is a tall and handsome tan-skinned man with black hair, green eyes, and neatly trimmed facial hair. Despite his svelte appearance, he also has a round, portly belly (although it's barely visible when he wears his regular attire). Clothing-wise, Rose has one ear pierced and usually wears a sharp gray business suit, as befits his status and wealth. His suit consists of a gray vest with numerous black buttons, a gray overcoat with a single gold button, a white shirt, and a red tie. He also wears classy gray pants that match his suit, along with a gold and black belt, pointed red and black shoes, and a gold watch.

However, when Rose is "undercover", he wears an outfit that clashes with his suave appearance (and altogether does a very poor job of disguising him). His undercover outfit consists of black sunglasses, a black hat with Rose Tower's symbol on it, a white long-sleeved sweater, and blue-green shorts with white polka dots all over them.

Personality[]

While Rose is friendly, well-meaning, and charming, he is also extremely impatient, reckless, and prone to making foolish decisions. During the events of the games, he almost destroys the entire Galar region because he is unable to wait a single day for an event that will happen a thousand years in the future. While he is well-meaning, does what he thinks is best for everyone, and eventually does change his ways, he is short-sighted and unable to see the long-term consequences of his actions until it is too late. After Eternatus is subdued, he gives Macro Cosmos to Leon and turns himself in, either because he sees himself as a criminal or seeks psychological help.

Rose does not get along well with his brother Peony, despite having caught his Copperajah with him as a Cufant.

Etymology[]

Rose's name derives from the rose flower of the genus Rosa, in the Rosaceae family.

Biography[]

According to Oleana, Chairman Rose once worked in a coal mine many years before founding Macro Cosmos. He later became the then runner-up of the Pokémon League and earned his fame.

Rose caught the Copperajah that Peony owned as a Cufant.

When Rose was touring a facility, he came across Bede. Noting his talent and that he slightly reminded him of his younger self, he gave him his Hatenna and endorsed him for the game's Champion Cup.

Upon arriving at Hulbury, Rose requested to meet with the player to see who the Champion had endorsed; however, Oleana told them that they needed to defeat Nessa and acquire the Water Badge first. Once they did so, they met with Rose, where he learned a bit about them before having to leave to attend to business.

After defeating the Stow-on-Side Gym Leader, the player investigated some unusual noise and found Bede destroying a mural to acquire more Wishing Stars, having asked Rose for his Copperajah. They managed to stop Bede from causing more damage, upon which Rose, Oleana and two staff members arrived to confront him. Rose was upset that Bede showed no love towards Galar's history and punished him by revoking his Endorsement and confiscating the Wishing Stars he had acquired. The mural collapsed just after the group left, although he did not seem to be aware of it.

After acquiring all eight badges, the player arrived at Wyndon to start the Champion Cup. After defeating the other Gym Leaders during the finals, Rose called Leon over to Rose Tower to talk about the energy crisis. Leon was bewildered that Rose was worried with a situation that wouldn't be an issue in the present day, but agreed to help as long as the tournament came first. However, Rose did not take this kindly and decided to go with his plan regardless the following day.

Just as the last match of the tournament began, Rose interrupted the match between the player and Leon, telling everyone that he had been pushed to do so as Leon refused to help him by starting the second Darkest Day, awakening Eternatus from its slumber to harness its energy for Galar's sake. However, he had failed to anticipate that it could not be controlled and it went berserk, with Leon having to rush back to Hammerlocke to confront it. The player and Hop went into the power plant, where Rose challenged them to a battle but ultimately lost. He remarked on how exciting the battle was and apologized to the player for interrupting their match with Leon, telling them that they could go up to the top to help Leon as he would not try to stop them.

Once Eternatus was subdued and caught by the player, Rose turned himself in to the authorities.

Regular League Card[]

Mr. Rose is in fact a talented Trainer, coming in second place for a past Champion Cup. As the chairman of the Pokémon League, and as the president of a large business conglomerate, he is truly a hero to the Galar region, working tirelessly to ensure its prosperity. His thoughts and words don't always match, and thus many say it's hard to tell what he's talking about. In fact, it is said that only his secretary can tell what his true intent is.

Rare League Card[]

Chairman Rose is a dedicated philanthropist who spent much of his own time and money researching the ancient disaster known as the Darkest Day, all in order to solve Galar's energy issues. He firmly believes that actions speak louder than words and will often make decisions without revealing his thinking to others. For better or for worse, it is this style of leadership that has allowed the Macro Cosmos conglomerate to grow to where it is today.

Trivia[]

  • Rose's name has a double meaning. The meaning comes from the Tudor Rose (a symbol of England) and the expression "every rose has its thorns", meaning that even good people and things can have negative or unpleasant aspects. In this case, Chairman Rose's "thorns" are his extreme and risky solution to Galar's upcoming energy crisis. In addition, Rose has a Ferrothorn, a Pokémon with literal thorns.
  • Oleana hints that he has a habit of playing mini-games.
  • He is the first in-game character to have his name appeared in a Pokédex entry.
