Eiscue (Japanese: コオリッポ, HepburnKoorippo) is an ice-type introduced in Generation VIII.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

It is essentially just a penguin with an ice cube for a head. On the ice cube, it has moving eyes and beak in the shape of a penguin's eyes and beak. The ice cube also holds one strand of hair on top. On the penguin's body, there are light blue markings on the side of the somewhat chubby white belly, with two arrows on each side.

In Noice Face, its ice cube has shattered, revealing its small, blue, and oval head that has a worried expression.

Shiny Eiscue have their ice cube and wings turned pink.

Behavior[]

Eiscue swims in cold water to keep its head covered in ice. It catches prey by dangling its hair like a fishing hook. Whenever Eiscue has something on its mind, the air around its hair starts to freeze.

Pokédex entries[]

  • Sword

Ice Face: It drifted in on the flow of ocean waters from a frigid place. It keeps its head iced constantly to make sure it stays nice and cold.
Noice Face: The ice covering this Pokémon's face has shattered, revealing a slightly worried expression that many people are enamored with.

  • Shield

Ice Face: This Pokémon keeps its heat-sensitive head cool with ice. It fishes for its food, dangling its single hair into the sea to lure in prey.
Noice Face: The hair on its head connects to the surface of its brain. When this Pokémon has something on its mind, its hair chills the air around it.

  • Scarlet

Ice Face: On hot days, these Pokémon press their ice cube heads together and pass the time cooling each other down.
Noice Face: The ice that was covering this Eiscue's face has shattered. Eiscue emits cold air from the tip of its hair to protect its head, which is sensitive to heat.

  • Violet

Ice Face: If you lick the ice covering its face, you'll find it has a faintly salty taste. This species rode here on ocean currents from a cold, faraway land.
Noice Face: Contrary to its looks, Eiscue is a poor swimmer. It creates ice balls at the tip of its single hair to lure prey in and fish them up.

Trivia[]

  • In the games, No Ice is read as "Noice".
    • However, this may have been intentional, as No Ice can be read as Noice, which is an exaggerated form of "Nice".
  • Eiscue shares its species name with Piplup and Prinplup . They are all known as the Penguin Pokémon.
  • Eiscue can be seen as a counterpart to Stonjourner:
    • Eiscue is exclusive to Pokémon Shield while Stonjourner is exclusive to Pokémon Sword.
    • Both are used by two version-exclusive Gym Leaders that specialize in the type they are. Melony uses Eiscue and specializes in Ice-type Pokémon while Gordie uses Stonjourner and specializes in Rock-type Pokémon.
    • Both are only able to have one ability, it being their signature ability that no other Pokémon has.
    • Both also have the same BST.
  • Eiscue was the first new penguin Pokémon since the Piplup line, and apart from Eiscue, Piplup, Prinplup, and Empoleon, the only other sphenisciform Pokémon as of Generation IX are Delibird and Iron Bundle.

Origin[]

Eiscue is based on a penguin with a block of ice on its head. It may also be based on the Great Auk, an extinct, flightless bird species that lived in and around the British Isles. They swam with their heads floating above water, similarly to Eiscue. In the winter, their heads gained white feathers, resembling snow or growing ice.

In Noice Face, Eiscue is just a simple penguin with a round blue head.

Etymology[]

Eiscue comes from a corruption of ice cube and Eis (German for ice).

"Noice" from "Noice Face", being a corruption of "no ice" in this context, is also an exaggerated way of saying "Nice".

Kōrippo is a portmanteau of (こおり) (kōri, "ice" in Japanese) and 立方(りっぽう) (rippō, Japanese for "cube").
