Basculin (Japanese: バスラオ, HepburnBasurao) (BASS-kyoo-lin[1]) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

In Generation VIII, Basculin has a third form called White-Stripe Basculin that evolves into Basculegion.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Basculin is a fish-like Pokémon. In its red form, two parts of its body are separated by a bright red-orange stripe and has spiky white fins. Its blue form has a sleeker design, notably seen on its fins and eyes.

White-Striped Basculin has a similar appearance to the other two forms of Basculin. Despite its descriptor, the stripes above its eyes are actually a very pale shade of light blue instead of actual white, as does its pupils. Its pectoral fins are smooth like Blue-Striped Basculin, but larger. Its dorsal fins are spiky like Red-Striped Basculin. Its lower jaw is smaller than the jaws of either Red- or Blue-Striped Basculin, and both its lower and upper jaws have beak-like protrusions at the front.

Behavior[]

Basculin are aggressive, violent Pokémon. Blue and Red Basculin do not get along and often fight. However, on rare occasions, members of one school might mingle with the other's school. Schools of Basculin are almost always made up of individuals of the same form (with a few, rare exceptions), and will viciously attack schools of the other color with their strong jaws. Consequently, most bodies of water where Basculin dwell will have an overwhelming majority of one form, with most individuals of the opposite color having been killed off. They are also generally hostile to other species, albeit not to the same degree as to rival Basculin (and even-more hostile Carvanha). Still, they usually are aggressive enough to drive off all Pokémon other than Corphish and Crawdaunt. Basculin appear to differentiate threats from allies by color; red Basculin will attack anything blue, while blue ones will attack anything red.

White-Striped Basculin have a more calm and gentle demeanor than their red and blue striped forms, but still retain loyalty to their school. Every year, schools of White-Striped Basculin undergo arduous journeys upstream to return to their birthplaces. These journeys involve countless waterfalls and rapids, and many don't survive the voyage. Those that do manage to reach their destinations evolve into Basculegion and mate with females, giving birth to the next generation of White-Striped Basculin. Due to their calmer nature, many people believe them to be a different species altogether.

In the present, White-Striped Basculin and its evolved form Basculegion can be found in Kitakami.

Bombirdier and Dondozo are their natural predators.

Evolution[]

Red and Blue-Striped Basculin are unable to evolve.

White-Striped Basculin can evolve into Basculegion after taking 294 or more recoil damage while battling; self-inflicted damage that results in fainting will not count.

  • Black 2

Red- and blue-striped Basculin are very violent and always fighting. They are also remarkably tasty.

Red- and blue-striped Basculin are very violent and always fighting. They are also remarkably tasty.

  • Alpha Sapphire

Red and blue Basculin usually do not get along, but sometimes members of one school mingle with the other's school.

  • Ultra Sun

Red-Striped Form: Savage, violent Pokémon, red and blue Basculin are always fighting each other over territory.
Blue-Striped Form: Even Basculin, which devours everything it can with its huge jaws, is nothing more than food to organisms stronger than itself.

  • Ultra Moon

Red-Striped Form: When a school of Basculin appears in a lake, everything else disappears, except for Corphish and Crawdaunt. That’s how violent Basculin are.
Blue-Striped Form: Some people call it “the thug of the lake.” Whether the differences in color are meaningful is not yet known.

  • Sword

Red-Striped Form: Anglers love the fight this Pokémon puts up on the hook. And there are always more to catch. Many people release them into lakes illicitly.
Blue-Striped Form: Blue-striped Basculin used to be a common food source. They apparently have an inoffensive, light flavor.

  • Shield

Red-Striped Form: In the past, it often appeared on the dinner table. The meat of red-striped Basculin is on the fatty side, and it's more popular with the youth.
Blue-Striped Form: Known for their violence, these Pokémon have the most fights with schools of red- striped Basculin.

  • Legends: Arceus

Though it differs from other Basculin in several respects, including demeanor—this one is gentle—I have categorized it as a regional form given the vast array of shared qualities.

  • Scarlet

Red-Striped Form: Its temperament is vicious and aggressive. This Pokémon is also full of vitality and can multiply rapidly before anyone notices.
Blue-Striped Form: These Pokémon form schools with others of the same color. The greatest foe of a school of blue Basculin is a school of red Basculin.
White-Striped Form: They live in frigid seas, forming schools and sharing food among themselves. When the time comes, they return to the river they were born in

  • Violet

Red-Striped Form: It's so vicious that it's called the Thug of the River. Yet Basculin is still targeted by predators, such as Dondozo and Bombirdier.
Blue-Striped Form: The power of its jaws is immense—enough to leave teeth marks in iron sheets. Its personality is also extremely vicious.
White-Striped Form: Its ecology is starkly different from that of other Basculin, so theories that it's a totally different species have gained traction in recent years.

Trivia[]

  • Basculin was first shown within footage from the Pokémon Searcher BW tour on August 7, 2010. It was used by Cheren in the demo. It was officially revealed in the October issue of Coro Coro on September 11, 2010.
  • While most Pokémon can have up to 3 abilities legitimately (two primary abilities and a hidden ability), Basculin can legitimately have four, as an NPC in Driftveil City in Pokémon White trades away a Blue-Striped Basculin with the ability Rock Head.
  • Basculin and Zweilous share the same species name, both being known as the Hostile Pokémon.

Origin[]

Basculin is most likely based on a bass and a piranha. Its bass elements may come from how wild bass are known to be found in New York and its piranha elements may come from how they are known for their aggressiveness. Their aggressive and territorial behavior against their opposing stripe colors and affiliation with Unova (a region based on New York, which is known for its city setting) could draw comparisons to rival street gangs, Its red and blue variations that are hostile to each other is similar to Siamese fighting fish, which come in a variety of colors (including red and blue).

While Basculin's White-Striped Form may likewise be inspired by a bass, its design is also reminiscent of the salmon or the related itou (Sakhalin taimen), due to its behavior and the shape of its mouth resembling the kypes that develop in male salmon.

The selection of colored striped forms being red, white, and blue may reference the national flag of the USA, where Unova, the region Basculin was first introduced, is based.

Etymology[]

Basculin comes from "bass" and "masculine".

Basurao comes from "bass" and 丈夫 (masurao, warrior).
