A trainer can receive an amount of Experience Points to gain a level in Pokémon GO, marking their progress.
To level up, the trainer must catch a certain amount of Pokémon to receive Experience Points, XP. Each time the trainer levels up, the XP scale is set back to 0. Leveling up allows the trainer to obtain and unlock better items. Any amount of XP can be doubled by using a Lucky Egg.
The trainer can receive an XP from certain actions. These are:
- Capturing Pokémon: 100 XP; plus bonus the way the Pokémon was captured:
- Nice: 10 XP
- Great: 50 XP
- Excellent: 100 XP
- With a curveball: 10 XP
- If it is the first throw: 50 XP
- Visiting a PokéStop: 50 XP; plus 100 XP if the PokéStop had 6 or more items available to take
- Evolving a Pokémon: 500 XP
- Hatching a Pokémon that required to walk:
- 2km: 200 XP
- 5km: 500 XP
- 10km: 1000 XP
- Registering a new Pokémon in the Pokédex: 500 XP
- Training or battling at the Gym: depends on the progress
After gaining a level, the trainer receives new items as a reward and can unlock new ones to obtain from the online store or the PokéStop. The Gym is unlocked at level 5.
