Ethan, formerly Gold (ゴールド Gold), is the male protagonist of the Generation II games and their remakes. He is also a character in the Adventures manga.
If Lyra is chosen as the playable protagonist in the remakes, Ethan will appear as an side character.
Appearance
Ethan is a short young boy with fair skin and black hair. Unlike some Pokémon protagonists, he appears in five games (Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver), with his appearance changing in the latter two.
Gold and Silver
In the Generation II games, Ethan has a smug appearance with sharp eyes and a cocky smirk. He wears a mustard yellow and black backwards cap, a red and white hoodie, a black shirt underneath, and yellow shorts with black sides. On the right side of his hoodie, Ethan sports a Poké Ball holster. His footwear consists of sneakers (coloured red, white, black, and yellow) paired with short red socks. To carry his items, he hefts around a bulky backpack, which is typically shown to as white with a red Poké Ball design on the front pocket.
HeartGold and SoulSilver
In the remakes, Ethan's design is more friendly and inviting, with happy gray eyes that are kept wide open paired alongside a smile rather than a smirk. He wears a red hoodie with a collar, black shorts, red and white sneakers (this time with no socks), and a grey satchel. The cap's appearance remains mostly faithful to the original, but the yellow portion is thinner in the redesign.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Ethan is named Gold, with his name being based on the original games he appeared in. He is immature and mischievous and likes playing billiards, but he sometimes uses his Pokémon to cheat. He often listens to the radio because of his idol, DJ Mary, from the Goldenrod Radio Station. He usually wears a pair of goggles and travels on a scooter. Instead of throwing or kicking his Poké Balls, he uses a billiard cue to shoot them out. Gold's hobbies include gambling, skateboarding, and trying foods from different cities. Professor Oak noted that while Red had some odd habits, Gold is much more immature and mischievous. Prof. Oak stated that Gold's special skill is Pokémon-hatching; thus, hs is known as the "Breeder." He has the ability to draw out the potential of a baby Pokémon, since he has lived with Pokémon his whole life. Two examples of this are Togebo and Pibu.

Main Series
- Main article: Jimmy (Johto)
A character based on Ethan appears in the spin-off Pokémon Chronicles, but he is named Jimmy (Kenta). In the anime, Jimmy is a traveling Pokémon Trainer from New Bark Town in the Johto region. He received his first Pokémon, a Cyndaquil, from Professor Elm. From then on, Jimmy set out on his journey becoming a Pokémon Trainer. He travels the world of Pokémon, where he competes in many challenges and catches new Pokémon along the way.
Jimmy is portrayed as a gutsy yet impulsive trainer, often charging recklessly into situations without forethought. As such, his offensive battle style mimics this behavior, as his Pokémon are trained to withstand attacks than evade them while fighting, preferring to face an opponent head-on. His primary goal is to become a strong Pokémon Trainer and ultimately rise to Pokémon Master. Jimmy became very determined and dedicated to winning many battles with his team and made a promise to them that they would travel and win every competition together.
Of all his Pokémon, Typhlosion is Jimmy's most trusted and closest companion. Since the beginning of their journey, the two have since faced many challenges and obstacles together. After suffering a humiliating loss to Silver (Jimmy's rival), Jimmy and Cyndaquil worked hard on their progress; soon, Cyndaquil evolved and later became a strong Typhlosion. Jimmy has shown that not only is he a great Trainer, but his bond with his Pokémon runs very deeply and they will all do whatever it takes to get things done.
Jimmy's notable trait is his signature catchphrase ("You rock, you rule!"), a quote repeatedly expressed to his Pokémon with a thumbs-up victory pose after winning a battle. (In the Japanese version, he uses the phrase "Okay! Perfect!" instead.) He has a noticeable crush on Marina, though he refuses to admit it. Both he and Marina participated in the Silver Conference a full year ahead of Vincent, their mutual friend who is also from New Bark Town. He is presumably now traveling in Kanto.
