The Darkest Day (Japanese: ブラックナイト, Hepburn: Burakku Naito, trans. Black Night) is a massive black storm that covered the Galar region 3,000 years prior to the events of Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.
History[]
Thousands of years ago a meteorite carrying the Pokémon Eternatus crash-landed in the Galar region. Eternatus soon began a rampage that nearly destroyed the region, as it attempted to absorb all the energy in its path. During that rampage, the particles that Eternatus released caused Wild Pokémon to become infused with it to become giant in size and cause massive destruction. The calamity was stopped by the Legendary Pokémon, Zacian and Zamazenta, who battled Eternatus using a powerful sword and shield. Zacian and Zamazenta suffered injuries during that battle, thus they headed to Circhester to heal themselves in a hot spring bath after the battle. The weapons that Zacian and Zamazenta wielded were then taken to an altar dedicated to them in the Slumbering Weald, where the two Pokémon resided ever since. A statue of Zacian and Zamazenta was created but was eventually buried under a mural in the area that would become the town of Stow-on-Side, while a geoglyph depicting a gigantic rampaging Pokémon was carved into a hill outside Turffield.
As generations passed, details regarding the incident were increasingly misconstrued until Zacian and Zamazenta were omitted from the tale, while Eternatus came to be referred as "The Darkest Day in Galar". In modern times, it was told that a human hero was the one who defeated the "Darkest Day" by wielding a sword and a shield. A few paintings depicting the real events are be found in a few secluded parts of the region, however the true nature of the disaster was unknown to the modern culture of Galar. The energy particles that Eternatus released during the calamity came to be known as "Wishing Stars" and it was discovered how to harness them to create the Dynamax phenomena.
Chairman Rose discovered Eternatus and plotted to reawaken and harness its power in order to prevent a future energy crisis from impacting Galar. Rose influenced his prodigy Bede into gathering as many Wishing Stars as possible, which were then fed into Eternatus until it would reawaken while he prepared his organization Macro Cosmos to capture Eternatus once it revived. However, Eternatus immediately escaped from Macro Cosmos, forcing Rose to interrupt the championship match of the Galar League to announce that the "Darkest Day" had returned to warn them about Eternatus. The actions of Hop and Victor/Gloria resulted in Zacian and Zamazenta reawakening as well, and they defeated Eternatus once again, stopping the second Darkest Day.
After the incident, Sonia, being the new regional professor, wrote a book revealing the true history of the Darkest Day of Galar and correcting the inaccurate myths that were being told.
