This is a transcript of the Pokémon: DP Sinnoh League Victors episode: "Casting a Paul on Barry!".

Narrator

The Sinnoh League Tournament at Lily of the Valley Island is in full swing! And after defeating Nando, Ash is now battling his round two opponent.

Ash Ketchum

Now, Snorlax, use Body Slam!

[Snorlax hits Grumpig with Body Slam, causing it to faint.]

Referee

Grumpig is unable to battle! Snorlax is the winner, and the victor is Ash from Pallet Town!

Ash Ketchum

I did it! Yeah, round three here I come!

[The opening theme and title card plays.]

Announcer

And on the big screen, here are the eight match-ups for round three!

Brock

So, Paul's round three opponent is Barry...

Dawn

And Ash's facing off against Conway!

Brock

Conway can be pretty slick... Be careful!

Ash Ketchum

You bet I will!

Ash's Pikachu

Pika, Pika!

Dawn

Just give it your all!

Conway

(Behind Dawn) Of course you know I will...

[Dawn and Piplup shudder in shock.]

Conway

..as long as you're cheering me on!

Dawn

(Scared) Hi, Conway!

Conway

After all, I happen to have a secret strategy for defeating Ash.

Ash Ketchum

Secret?

Ash's Pikachu

Pika?

Conway

Of course. And it's the kind of strategy only I could employ. (To Dawn) What? You want to know? I guess I'll make a special exception for you, Dawn.

Dawn

I never asked...

[Conway encroaches her, shuddering her again.]

Conway

No need to be shy. So, come, lend me your ears...

Dawn

Back off!

[Dawn walks backwards, but at the same time, Barry runs across, causing both of them to collide. Barry falls on his backside.]

Barry

Oh man. Hey! What's the big idea of bumping into me?

Ash Ketchum

Barry!

[Barry encroaches and threatens Dawn.]

Barry

I'm fining you for bumping into me right before my battle!

Dawn

You're the one who bumped into me!

[Brock breaks up.]

Brock

Now, now...

Ash Ketchum

Barry, where are you going in such a hurry?

Barry

To go see Paul.

Ash Ketchum

Huh? See Paul?

Barry

Right! Because no matter how you look at it, Paul and I are the top two contenders in the tournament. And now, the top two seeds are going to battle head-to-head. It gets lonely at the top, but Paul's there to keep me company.

Dawn

(Unamused) Tell us how you really feel.

Barry

I was just on my way to let Paul know all this!

Ash Ketchum

I don't get it...

Conway

You're over my head...

Barry

(Annoyed) I'm what?!

Dawn

Barry, I wouldn't do that if I were you.

Barry

Why not?

Dawn

Because I know exactly what Paul's going to say, (Impersonating Paul) "You? Who are you?"

Barry

No way! Paul will definitely know who I am!

Dawn

Even if Paul does know you, he'll say, (Impersonating Paul) "You're pathetic and no match for me."

Barry

No, no, no! A Trainer at his level of skill has to know who I am! And I'll prove it!

[Barry runs off.]

Dawn

Barry, wait!

[Outside the stadium, Team Rocket, excited, are wearing summer gear.]

Tannoy

All of today's battles are complete. Everyone, please have a safe trip home.

Meowth

Swing it on over, foodie fans!

James

It's gourmet chow time!

[Jessie brings out boxes containing Geodude and Swinub on the covers.]

Jessie

Delectable Pokémon rice crackers and bean buns!

[Meowth raises up a Meowth dolly.]

Meowth

And an adorable Meowth dolly with every order!

Wobbuffet

Wob-buffet!

[A large group of customers walk across the foreground.]

James

Ah, the customer crunch!

Jessie

With the Lily of the Valley pennants with lunch!

Meowth

And we'll throw in a Jessilina and Meowth doll to hug while you munch!

[The customers avoid Team Rocket. They all sweatdrop and groan. James slams on the desk.]

James

(Grunts) Where's our selling prowess?

Jessie

(Holding the Meowth doll) Obviously this Meowth monstrosity's the culprit...

Meowth

Picking up the Jessilina doll) I think this monster's scaring them all away!

[Jessie and Meowth close in on each other, with sparks.]

Jessie

Oh, yeah?!

Meowth

Oh, yeah!

James

Let's see. The Boss lady set us up here for one reason, because she was impressed with our excellent way with a sale.

Jessie

It could be that we're parking right where people are leaving.

Meowth

Instead, we should be hawking our mounds of merchandise inside the stadium, where the action is!

James

(Angrily) But the action is where we make it, and for now, that's right here! The ladder of success starts with the first rung!

Meowth

So, let's calmly check out why we're not connecting with the maddening crowd!

Jessie

(Pointing upwards) Time for analysis.

All

(Pointing upwards) Yes! We'll show the Boss we can sell to the moon and back!

[In a cabin, Paul is looking at the details of a Pokémon on a computer.]

Barry

There you are!

[Ash & friends, including Barry - pointing at Paul, enter.]

Paul

Hmm?

Barry

Yeah, you, Paul!

[Paul looks at Ash.]

Ash Ketchum

Uh...

Barry

Huh? Wait! Paul, you're looking at my data, aren't you?

Paul

Yeah...

Barry

Now, did you hear that, you guys? Paul just proved that the strong know who the strong are! And he's looking at my data because that's just what I am! So, you can come up with a strategy, correct?

Paul

Data's important...

Barry

(Laughs) Totally awesome! However! You can gather all the data you want, but it's useless!

Paul

Huh?

Dawn

Really? Why?

Barry

Don't you see? Every second of every hour of every day I'm getting better! Outdated data is useless!

[Ash & friends sigh and sweatdrop.]

Brock

Well if this were a talking tournament, you'd win first prize...

Barry

(Winks) Jealous! (To Paul) Look, Paul. The truth is, our battle will determine the title of top Trainer! So, with that in mind, let's give them all one awesome event.

[Paul stands up.]

Barry

Huh?

Paul

Our battle is only one of many battles taking place in the third round. Overestimating your ability will only backfire on you.

[Paul walks away.]

Barry

Huh? What's your problem?- Hey!

[-Barry goes after Paul.]

Paul

I'm looking forward to battling you. No doubt.

[Paul closes the door behind him.]

Barry

Uh, (Excited yelp) Now that's what I call a worthy opponent! Yep, That's Paul!

[Later that night, Ash and Barry are looking at their screens.]

Dawn

Barry? Found Paul's data yet?

Barry

I've researched everything on him, but it's all outdated. There's not one thing that's current. So if Paul were to use a Pokémon that's not found in the database...

Ash Ketchum

You're done for?

Barry

I didn't say that.

Brock

How about the data on Conway?

Ash Ketchum

It says he's an impulsive Pokémon Trainer with many different battle styles.

Dawn

Then that means he's unpredictable?

Piplup

Pip?

[Conway pops up from the computer walls.]

Conway

Right. It's a big part of my appeal!

[Everyone else shudder.]

Ash Ketchum

Conway? What are you doing?

Conway

Just a little research...

Brock

Better do more than a little, because Ash is no pushover.

Conway

Not Ash. I was looking up Tobias' data.

Ash Ketchum

Tobias?

Conway

He's the Trainer who won both his first and second round using only his Darkrai the whole time.

Ash Ketchum

Only Darkrai for the second round, too?

Conway

True. And that's not all. Tobias won all eight of his Gym battles using only his Darkrai as well!

All

Oh!

Dawn

But Conway, why are you looking up Tobias' data?

Conway

Because at some point we might get matched up... after I beat Ash, of course.

Ash Ketchum

(Gets annoyed and stand up) What was that?

Conway

(Chuckles) Well, then! Have yourself a lovely night. Bye, Dawn.

[Dawn and Piplup shudder. As Conway descends, they groan.]

Barry

I give up. No sense in making myself nuts.

Ash Ketchum

Now that's the spirit! Just go for it!

Barry

You're right! Just go for it!

Dawn

Like you're going for broke.

Barry

Ash! Want to go for a run?

Ash Ketchum

You bet! That's a great idea!

[Ash, Pikachu and Barry start running excitedly.]

Dawn

Huh? What are they running for?

Brock

They're trying to burn off some of their excitement.

[Cut to Ash and Barry, still running.]

Barry

Tomorrow, I'm going to be battling against Paul in front of a huge crowd! I am so psyched!

Ash Ketchum

Yeah, me too! And no matter what kind of battle I have with Conway, I'm not going to lose!

Barry

Yeah. Hey! Look, look! There's my victory star!

[Barry points up to a bright star in the sky.]

Ash Ketchum

No way, it's my victory star!

Barry

Yes way, it's my star!

Ash Ketchum

No, it's mine!

Barry

(In unison, fading out) Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine!

Ash Ketchum

(In unison, fading out) Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine!

Announcer

Welcome to the Sinnoh League Tournament at Lily of the Valley Island! And beginning with round three, all battles will take place here in the main stadium! In addition, the field will change randomly after every battle! So, the battlefield for the first of the round three battles will be rocky terrain. And our two battling Trainers are...Barry and Paul! Making it sure to be a heated exchange!

[The rocky terrain platform raises up onto the battlefield. The contestants' platforms, on either side, raise too. Ash, Dawn and Brock are in the crowd.]

Ash Ketchum

Wow! I am so psyched!

Ash's Pikachu

Pika, Pika!

Brock

Can't wait to see what kind of strategies they'll be coming up with!

Dawn

Yeah, me too!

Piplup

Piplup-piplup!

Announcer

So, as we await their Pokémon...

Barry

All right, Skarmory, let's get going!

Skarmory

Skar!

Paul

Magmortar, stand by for battle!

Magmortar

Magmortar!

Announcer

It's Magmortar and Skarmory!

[Dawn checks the Pokémon using her Pokédex.]

Pokédex

Skarmory. The Armor Bird Pokémon. Skarmory's body is covered with a steel-like armor and can fly at speeds of over one hundred miles per hour.

Ash Ketchum

Of course, Skarmory's a Steel type...

Brock

And Steel types have a disadvantage against Fire-types like Magmortar.

Announcer

So get ready for the three-on-three battles of the third round!

Referee

Barry will have first move. Begin!

Barry

Skarmory, use Spikes!

[Skarmory yells and spins on an axis, throwing spikes on the ground.]

Announcer

Barry uses Spikes without missing a beat!

Brock

Now whenever Paul switches out a Pokémon, it'll sustain damage.

Ash Ketchum

That's because Spikes' effect won't wear out!

Ash's Pikachu

Pika Pika!

Paul

Magmortar, use Flamethrower!

Magmortar

Mag...mortar!

[Magmortar hits Skarmory with Flamethrower.]

Barry

Skarmory, no!

[Skarmory falls to the ground and faints.]

Referee

Skarmory is unable to battle. Magmortar is the winner!

[The crowd cheers.]

Brock

Fire-type moves are super effective against Steel types, and this proves it.

Ash Ketchum

Skarmory's out in one move.

Barry

Thanks, Skarmory. You were great! (Returns Skarmory) I know Fire-types are weak against Water-types. So all right then Empoleon, let's get going!

Empoleon

Pol!

Barry

Hydro Cannon!

[Hydro Cannon hits Magmortar.]

Dawn

What a hit!

Ash Ketchum

That did a lot of damage!

Barry

And of course if Paul switches his Pokémon, it'll sustain damage, no matter which one he chooses. (To Paul) Guess you can't change your Pokémon, can you Paul?

Paul

Return!

Barry

Huh?

[Paul returns Magmortar back to his Pokéball.]

Barry

(Annoyed) Hold on! You can't be serious, can you?

Paul

Now, Ursaring, stand by for battle!

Ursaring

Ursa! (Groans)

[Ursaring is hit by exploding spikes, stunning it.]

Announcer

And Ursaring is sustaining damage from the effects of Spikes!

Barry

In that case, I'm switching my Pokémon! Return!

[Barry returns Empoleon.]

Barry

A Normal type like Ursaring is weak against a Fighting type!

[Hitmonlee is deployed from Barry's Pokéball.]

Announcer

And Barry brings out Hitmonlee!

[Dawn checks the Pokémon using her Pokédex.]

Pokédex

Hitmonlee. The Kicking Pokémon, and the evolved form of Tyrogue. Its legs double in length, and opponents are surprised by Hitmonlee's attack range when facing it for the first time.

Paul

Bulk Up, let's go!

[Ursaring roars, glows a red aura and poses with strong arms.]

Brock

Now Ursaring's Attack and Defense powers increased!

Dawn

But even without Bulk Up, Ursaring was strong.

Barry

Let's get the folks to know you with one of your best moves! Hitmonlee, Mega Kick!

[Hitmonlee hits Ursaring with Mega Kick, blasting and wounding it.]

Ash Ketchum

That's fast!

Paul

Use Hammer Arm!

[Ursaring brakes on the ground, and glows a white fist.]

Announcer

And Ursaring fires back with Hammer Arm.

[Hitmonlee jumps to dodge the attack, causing Ursaring to hit the ground instead. Hitmonlee is standing on a rock.]

Announcer

Wow, Hitmonlee dodged it!

Barry

I raised my Hitmonlee's speed up to maximum levels through lots of hard training.

Paul

Is that so? Use Slash, back to back!

[Ursaring glows its claws white and slashes the rock underneath Hitmonlee, it then slashes in close combat.]

Barry

Quick, dodge, dodge, and dodge!

[Hitmonlee exerts and dodges the attack.]

Barry

Close Combat!

[Hitmonlee's eye glow red. It strikes the opponent with the move.]

Announcer

Hitmonlee's speedy Close Combat nails it time after time!

Barry

Take that!

Paul

Use Hammer Arm!

[Ursaring hits Hitmonlee from close range with Hammer Arm.]

Barry

I'm counting on you, Hitmonlee!

[Hitmonlee recovers, steps on a rock and jumps.]

Barry

All right! High Jump Kick!

[Hitmonlee stretches its foot, landing safely and very close to Ursaring, and strikes it on the chest with its knee.]

Announcer

And Hitmonlee lands an effective High Jump Kick!

Brock

That's courage and strategy. You can see that Barry definitely earned his spot here in the third round.

Paul

Focus Blast!

[Ursaring growls and generates a large blue orb.]

Barry

Dodge it, quick!

[Hitmonlee hides behind a rock as Ursaring releases, but it blasts and hurts Hitmonlee.]

Paul

Let's finish this up with Hammer Arm!

[Ursaring sets up Hammer Arm.]

Barry

Hitmonlee, we're coming around the final turn! Use Blaze Kick!

[Hitmonlee's foot flames up. It hits Ursaring on the chest with the move.]

Announcer

And Hitmonlee's explosive Blaze Kick plows into Ursaring!

[Ursaring roars while he is Burned by the move.]

Announcer

And on top of that, there's the added effect of Blaze Kick!

Ash Ketchum

Good job, Barry! Finish it off!

Brock

Too easy.

Ash & Dawn

Huh?

Brock

Ursaring's ability is Guts. So, when its status has been affected, like with burn or poison, its attack power grows.

[Ursaring's eyes turn red. It growls angrily.]

Barry

Hitmonlee, stay strong! Finish it off with Blaze Kick!

[Hitmonlee flames up its foot.]

Paul

Use Hammer Arm, now!

[Both Pokémon collide together with their moves, causing an explosion.]

Announcer

It's a collision of Hitmonlee and Ursaring's moves!

[Hitmonlee faints.]

Barry

Hitmonlee!

Referee

Hitmonlee is unable to battle. Ursaring's the winner!

Announcer

Ursaring wins it! And Hammer Arm, powered up by its Ability, Guts, seals that win.

Jessie

Well, they're having fun...

Meowth

Yeah. It's a party in the stadium, while out here you can hear paint dry...

Murkrow

Murkrow! Murkrow! Murkrow! Mur-Mur, Murkrow!

[Murkrow caw and fly across behind them. Team Rocket sweatdrops.]

James

Quit being a couple of sad sacks! Our goal is to sell our wares to the masses exiting the venue, lest we soon forget.

Jessie

But our wares are a big yawn.

James

Huh. We'll have a ware swap!

Meowth and Jessie

Ware swap?

James

It's the same as switching your Pokémon. Why hawk the same bean buns and t-shirts as everyone else?

Meowth and Jessie

Huh?

Jessie

Translate that please.

James

I said, we'll simply switch our merchandise to suit the unique taste of our customers.

Meowth

Take another shot.

James

These spectators will want likenesses of the very same Pokémon they watched in battle.- That's where we come in.

[Jessie and Meowth groan and sweatdrop.]

Jessie

Like new product lines just grow on trees.

James

(Fiery-eyed, excited) You leave the details to the boss lady and me, and you'll see!- Yippee!

[-James runs off. Jessie and Meowth sweatdrop.]

[Inside the stadium, Barry returns Hitmonlee.]

Ash Ketchum

Empoleon's Barry's last Pokémon...

Dawn

While Paul still has all three of his Pokémon to work with.

Brock

So everything Barry does is crucial.

Barry

All right, Empoleon, let's get going!

Empoleon

Empoleon!

Announcer

It's do or die for Barry, as Paul and Ursaring could win this battle right here.

Paul

Ursaring, quick, use Slash, let's go!

[Ursaring unloads Slash.]

Barry

Empoleon, Drill Peck!

[Empoleon glows its beak and spins towards its target. The two moves collide together, causing an explosion.]

Announcer

And again, two powerful moves collide!

[Both Pokémon bounce off and land.]

Announcer

Were they evenly matched?

Paul

Ursaring, use Focus Blast!

[Ursaring fires a blue orb.]

Barry

Send it right back!

[Empoleon glows its wing and bats the orb back towards Ursaring, hitting and confounding it.]

Paul

But how?!

Barry

How do you like that? Now, give me everything you've got!

Paul

Return!

Barry

(Shocked) Huh?

[Paul returns Ursaring back to his Pokéball.]

Announcer

And another Pokémon substitution.

Paul

Electivire, stand by for battle!

[Electivire is deployed. Spikes on the ground damage it. Cut to Dawn's Pokédex.]

Pokédex

Electivire. The Thunderbolt Pokémon, and the evolved form of Electabuzz. When Electivire attacks, it pushes the tips of its two tails against its opponent.

Ash Ketchum

Paul's Electabuzz evolved into Electivire.

Ash's Pikachu

(Concerned) Pika, Pika.

Brock

Electric-type moves are super effective on a Water type. Paul always seems to stay cool and calm and ends up going for a sure victory.

Dawn

So now, how is Barry going to battle using Empoleon?

Barry

Pokémon type and advantages won't matter using this move. All right, Hyper Beam!

[Empoleon unloads an orange beam.]

Paul

Use Thunder!

[Electivire lights up its antennae and shoots a yellow bolt. The two moves collide, causing an explosion.]

Announcer

And yet another collision of moves! But are they evenly matched?

Brock

The after effects of using Hyper Beam will leave Empoleon wide open.

[The smoke clears. Empoleon pants in exhaustion.]

Paul

Now use Thunder Punch!

[Electivire charges up its fist.]

Barry

Quick, dodge it!

[Empoleon jumps out of the way, dodging the attack and forcing Electivire to hit the ground.]

Barry

See that? My Empoleon's speed is at the maximum level it can be! It's not such an easy moving target.

Paul

Thunder Punch, back to back!

Barry

Huh?

[Electivire, lighting up both fists, tries punching the target in close range, Empoleon dodging the moves.]

Barry

Dodge them all, Empoleon! Dodge them all! Huh?

Paul

Use Giga Impact!

[Electivire loads up and unleashes the move, through the rock and hitting and blasting Empoleon.]

Announcer

Now there's a powerful move!

Barry

You can do it, Empoleon!

[Empoleon brakes to a halt, still standing.]

Paul

Thunder Punch, let's go!

[Electivire charges up its fist...]

Barry

Come on, dodge it!

[.. and hits the Pokémon with the move, causing it to blast and crash into a rock.]

Announcer

Whoa, that couldn't have been fun!

Barry

No, Empoleon!

[A trail of Empoleon's body shows on the battlefield, the Pokémon trying to get up.]

Announcer

Empoleon has sustained a lot of damage! So is it all over?

Barry

(Softly but getting louder) Empoleon... Come on... You can do it... You can do iiit!

[Empoleon gets up, glowing a watery aura and roars.]

Paul

(Annoyed) Ah!

Barry

Huh? Empoleon?!

Dawn

Hey, is that?

Ash Ketchum

(Optimistic) That's right! I forgot that Empoleon's Ability is Torrent!

Brock

Its energy might be lacking, but its Water-type moves have really powered up.

[Empoleon roars in anger and its eye light up.]

Barry

All right! Hydro Cannon, let's go!

[Hydro Cannon plows through the rocks.]

Brock and Dawn

Ah!

Ash Ketchum

Awesome power, wow!

Dawn

This might be it!

Paul

Quick, Electivire, Protect!

[Electivire sets up a shield to block Empoleon's move. It explodes.]

Announcer

And Electivire completely shields itself from Empoleon's Hydro Cannon using Protect.

Barry

(Angrily) All right, so what's the big idea of using Protect?

[Empoleon groans in pain.]

Paul

Use Thunder, now!

[Electivire executes Thunder...]

Barry

Dodge it!

[..and directly hits the target. Empoleon is motionless.]

Barry

Huh? Empoleon!

Referee

Empoleon is unable to battle. And the winner is Paul from Veilstone City!

Announcer

Paul has won the third round match with a decisive three-zero victory against Barry!

[Barry consoles Empoleon.]

Barry

Thanks, Empoleon, you were awesome.

Empoleon

Empoleon.

Barry

Now you take a good rest.

[Barry returns Empoleon. Paul bows to the referee and walks off.]

Barry

Paul won...

[Meanwhile, James runs back with a boulder wrapped in twine on a wagon.]

James

The Boss lady did it! She switched our merchandise with a smile!

[The others shudder in shock. He stops the wagon. Jessie and Meowth unravel it.]

Meowth

So, let's step on it 'cause the last match just ended!

Jessie

And there'll be a crush of consumers coming our way!

Jessie & James

Folks, feast your eyes on these!

James

(Showing a Magmortar and Skarmory badge) Adorable keepsakes of the Pokémon who battled bravely today!

Jessie

Hungry? Electivire bars to celebrate sweet victory! What else? How about this? Empoleon innertubes!

Meowth

Miniature Ursaring, carved out of cool wood, and even cooler crash-resistant Hitmonlee helmets!

Team Rocket

Yeah!

Wobbuffet

Wob-bu!

[Suddenly, a whole horde of customers rush to their counter.]

Male customer

I'd like an Electivire candy bar!

Male customer

And I'd like an Empoleon innertube!

Female customer

I'll take a miniature Ursaring please!

[Meowth laughs.]

Jessie

Selling the customers things they want is an idea whose time has truly come!

James

We'll sell until we're tchotchke free!

Team Rocket

With big bonuses for you and me!

[At sunset, Paul walks outside the stadium, but Barry calls.]

Barry

Paul!

Paul

Huh?

[Barry runs up to Paul.]

Barry

Uh... I lost. But I gave it my all, so I can honestly say right here I have no regrets.

Paul

Hm. It was a great battle.

Barry

You think? Wow, that's awesome! So, let's battle again someday to see who's the world's top Trainer!

Paul

All right.

[Paul continues walking.]

Barry

Ash? Wow, it seemed like the more that I battled Paul, the more fired up I got!

Ash Ketchum

I know! Paul seems to get everyone feeling that way...

Barry

If you go up against Paul, good luck. And, I'll be there in the stands cheering for both of you.

Ash Ketchum

Thanks!

Ash's Pikachu

(Grateful) Pikachu.

Brock

But before that, you're going to need to get through round three first.

Dawn

You never know what Conway's plan is, so stay on your guard.

Piplup

Pip-ip-lup!

[Conway pops up and snickers, jump-scaring everyone else, Dawn's is prolonged.]

Conway

Remember, my ticket to victory is my secret strategy.

[Dawn and Piplup react afraid.]

Ash Ketchum

Hey Conway.

Conway

And remember Ash, it's my secret strategy that's ultimately going to defeat you.

Ash Ketchum

(Angrily) Don't count on it! I'm going to win it, and that's that!

Ash's Pikachu

(Angrily) Pika-ka!

Narrator
