This is a transcript of the Pokémon: DP Sinnoh League Victors episode: "Flint Sparks the Fire!".

[The heroes arrive at Sunyshore City. The tops of buildings are covered by solar panels.]

Ash Ketchum

Wow, so this is Sunyshore City! I can't wait to win the Gym Battle and get a hold of my eighth badge!

Ash's Pikachu

(Excited) Pika, Pikachu!

Dawn

I wouldn't get too overly confident! The Sunyshore Gym leader's name is Volkner, and I've heard he's tough to beat.

[Brock picks up and reads a guide.]

Brock

Yeah! It says here as Gym leader, he's never been defeated, and word on the street is he's the strongest Gym leader in all of Sinnoh.

Ash Ketchum

Ah, big deal! The stronger my opponent is, the more fired up I get! So undefeated or not, I'm gonna defeat that Gym leader and get my eighth badge!

Ash's Pikachu

Pika-Pika!

[The opening theme "We Will Carry On!" and title card plays.]

Narrator

Beautiful Sunyshore City: Home of the Sunyshore gym, and that's where our heroes are headed, as Ash looks to win his eighth Sinnoh Gym Badge there.

Dawn

Hey, that must be the Sunyshore tower!

Brock

The Sunyshore gym is near there.

Ash Ketchum

All right! You ready Pikachu?

Ash's Pikachu

Pika, Pika!

[The heroes run toward Sunyshore Tower. The bushes rustle. Team Rocket watch on.]

Meowth

So the twerp's here to challenge the gym for the win.

James

Perfect time to be on the take.

Jessie

For Pikachu's sake.

Team Rocket

Yes! Great moments we'll make!

Wobbuffet

Wob, Wobbuffet!

[Ash & friends arrive at the building.]

Ash Ketchum

Whoa, we're finally here.

Public Address System

Welcome.

Everyone

Huh?

Public Address System

May I help you?

Ash Ketchum

You bet. I'm here for a gym battle.

Public Address System

Then please, help yourself.

[A box opens, revealing a treasure chest full of Beacon Badges.]

Dawn

They're all Gym Badges.

Ash Ketchum

Wha? Just take one?

Public Address System

At the Sunyshore Gym, we skip the battling, and give challengers a badge.

Ash Ketchum

Skip the battle?

Public Address System

Please, help yourself.

[Pikachu's ears drop.]

Ash Ketchum

Man.

Dawn

Might as well take one if they're giving them away.

Ash Ketchum

(Concerned) But you got to earn it, and that's after you win the battle, right Brock?

Brock

Of course. Otherwise, what's the point of having gyms?

Dawn

What did Paul say?

[A brief flashback plays.]

Paul

That gym is not legit!

Dawn

This must've been what Paul meant.

Ash Ketchum

(Angrily) I want to see Volkner now! I want to challenge that guy to a real gym battle!

Public Address System

That is not possible.

[Ash runs to the doors and repeatedly bangs on them.]

Ash Ketchum

Volkner! C'mon, I know you're in there! Hey! I came here to challenge you to a gym battle, and I'm not...

Public Address System

Please, stop. You must leave the premises at once. Please, stop.

[Ash uses his shoulders in an attempt to barge the doors open.]

Ash Ketchum

I want a gym battle.

Public Address System

Intruder. You will now be escorted off the premises by force. You will now be escorted off the premises by force. You will now be escorted off the premises by force.

[Robotic arms emerge from behind the walls and grab hold of Ash. Ash is unable to break free.]

Flint

Use Mach Punch!

[Flint's Infernape breaks Ash free with Mach Punch.]

Ash Ketchum

Infernape?

Flint

Good.

Brock

Wait a minute, aren't you, uh?

Flint

I'm Flint from the Elite Four. Hey there!

Ash Ketchum

The Elite Four?

Flint

I'll say this, you're determined! Follow me. I'll bring you to Volkner!

[The others react, surprised.]

Flint

Volkner and I are good buds. At the moment, he's over there.

[Flint points to the top of Sunyshore Tower. They move up the elevator to the top of the tower.]

Flint

Sunyshore City generates electricity from solar panels, located all over town. And every one of them is controlled from Sunyshore Tower.

Ash Ketchum

Whoa.

Flint

And Volkner's responsible for building this from the ground up.

Ash Ketchum

Wow, Volkner built this?

[At the top floor, Ash, Dawn, Brock, Piplup and Pikachu gasp and run to see the view. Raichu calls out, threatening with its cheeks.]

Ash Ketchum

It's a Raichu!

Flint

Hey there!

[Raichu appears to pounce on Flint. Ash & friends perk up in shock.]

Ash Ketchum

Flint, look out!

[It is revealed the Raichu is hugging on Flint's arms. Flint laughs.]

Flint

You look great, Raichu!

Raichu

(Happy) Raichu.

Flint

Where's your partner?

Raichu

Rai-Rai.

[Volkner arrives.]

Flint

Hey, Volkner!

Volkner

(Miserable) Hey Flint. Who are the kids?

Flint

You've got a gym battle challenger.

Ash Ketchum

Hi, nice to meet ya. I'm Ash! I want a gym battle!

[Volkner walks to the bench and sits down.]

Volkner

You saw the badges at the gym. Just take one of those.

Ash Ketchum

(Annoyed) No way! I want to earn my badge by winning the gym battle! So please, let me challenge you to a battle.

Ash's Pikachu

(Urgent) Pika-Pikachu!

Volkner

Don't make me tell you again.

Ash Ketchum

(Annoyed) But why won't you?

Volkner

I've completely lost interest in battling.

Ash Ketchum

But...

Flint

Volkner, I can tell you Ash is an electrifying trainer, and I'm sure if you just gave him a chance.

[Flint, Ash and Pikachu react in surprise and turn their heads as Volkner looks out the window.]

Volkner

What a day. Beautiful. I'd like you to leave.

Flint

Volkner...

[Volkner then moves to the elevator and goes down. Ash has a blank look on his face. Meanwhile, at the cafe.]

Flint

It's my treat. Drink up, folks!

[They exclaim in excitement after being served Flint's hot drink.]

Brock and Dawn

Thanks so much, Flint!

[Brock and Dawn sip the drink.]

Brock

Wow! What a fantastic deep and rich flavor!

Dawn

And what an aroma!

[The Proprietor brings in a tray of sandwiches on the table.]

Proprietor

I'm so happy you feel that way, and, this is all on the house.

Dawn

Oh yum!

Flint

That's wonderful, thank you!

Brock & Dawn

Thank you, sir!

[Brock and Dawn help themselves to sandwiches and taste them.]

Dawn

Delish!

Dawn's Piplup

Piplup!

[The camera pans to Ash, looking focused.]

Dawn

Why aren't you eating, Ash?

[Ash stands up.]

Ash Ketchum

OK, look Flint, I can't go along with this, when I heard Volkner was the strongest Gym Leader, well, see, I got totally fired up, but I just can't believe how un-into battling Volkner is now.

Flint

Yeah. Believe me, he wasn't always like this.

Proprietor

Right. Everybody used to refer to Volkner as "the shining, shocking star."

Ash Ketchum

You're kidding.

Flint

He reminded everyone of a bolt of lightning. Electrifying.

[Flint flashes back to a past moment. Chimchar easily takes out Jolteon and Stunky with a Fire-type move.]

Flint

Back when I was a kid, this city was full of hoodlums, but Chimchar and I fought our way right to the top.

[Chimchar and Flint give a thumb up to each other. A young Volkner appears.]

Flint

Then one day, I met Volkner. I'll never forget it. Suddenly, as if it were fated, we had a battle.

[Chimchar beats Pikachu. Volkner picks up Pikachu, grunting in annoyance at Flint.]

Flint

And I won.

[In the next scene, Flint's Chimchar battles Volkner's Pikachu in a grass field.]

Flint

But, it wasn't long until Volkner challenged Chimchar and me once again.

[Pikachu dodges a Flamethrower and hits Chimchar with Iron Tail. Flint picks up the fainted Chimchar.]

Flint

And this time, Volkner won.

[Flint grunts in anger. A face-off appears between the two trainers on a background of fire.]

Flint

After that, we battled day in and day out to see who was the top trainer in Sunyshore City.

[The flashback ends.]

Dawn

Wow. Did you guys battle that much because you didn't like each other?

Flint

No, no. That wasn't why.

Proprietor

Oh, they were getting along. I think they both knew they'd always get along no matter what. It's knowing that fact, that kept them going.

Flint

That changed when the two of us came across a rogue poacher deep in the forest.

[Another flashback plays of a forest scene under stormy skies. Volkner and Flint partner together against a Trainer's Houndoom.]

Flint

So, facing an opponent together for the first time, we battled alongside each other.

[Houndoom roars. Rain falls. Flint, Volkner and their Pokemon lay down, exhausted.]

Flint

When it was over, even though we did manage to chase the poacher away, it took its toll. Truth is, we got beat up pretty badly.

[Flint and Volkner look at each other, smiling.]

Flint

But it didn't matter if we got hurt,- because after that day, we were good friends.

[-The flashback ends. Pikachu and Piplup are miserable.]

Ash Ketchum

But if Volkner's like what you say he is, why won't he battle me?

Dawn

Is there something else?

Proprietor

I'll tell the rest of what happened. It was when Flint had just turned twenty. Volkner became the Gym leader and stayed in Sunyshore City. And Flint, with a desire to gain greater strength and skills, went on the road, training in all conditions. Flint eventually became a member of the Elite Four, while Volkner started losing interest in battling the many Gym challengers who crossed his path. He was always into technology, and soon became obsessed with it. He built solar-powered systems all over the city, and Sunyshore tower as well, which controls these systems. When finished, he could control the entire city with solar-powered electricity. But after all was said and done, for some reason Volkner felt like an empty shell. Something was missing from his life. It's like everything had lost its meaning.

Flint

I brought you to Volkner because I thought you could help him. Your spark could make him feel like new.

Volkner

(Off-screen) It was a wasted trip.

Flint and Proprietor

Huh?

Flint

Volkner! How long have you been there?

Volkner

Give me the usual, please.

Proprietor

Sure.

[Volkner sits on a chair, away from everyone.]

Flint

(Angrily) Volkner, you know how I feel about this. Come on, snap out of it!

Volkner

So did you come back here just to give me a lecture, mister Elite Four?

[Flint turns Volkner's head to him.]

Flint

What did you say?!

[They look away from each other for a brief moment. Flint faces Volkner, still annoyed.]

Volkner

If you wanna punch me, do it.

Flint

It's not even worth the time it takes to do it!

Flint

So what's happened to you?! What happened to the electrifying Volkner?! "The shining, shocking star"?!

Volkner

Flint, we're not kids anymore. You've got to grow up sometime.

Flint

Grow up?!

Proprietor

Flint!

[Flint turns to Proprietor.]

Proprietor

Take a chance. Why don't you have that battle with Ash?

Ash Ketchum

Huh?

Flint

Battle with Ash? Why would I do that?

Ash Ketchum

C'mon, Flint! Have a battle with me!

Ash's Pikachu

(Excited) Pika-Pika!

Brock

It's not every day one battles with a member of the Elite Four, you know.

Dawn

I'd love to see that!

Dawn's Piplup

(Excited) Pip-Piplup!

[The Proprietor offers Volkner a hot drink.]

Proprietor

Volkner. You'll join us then, right?

Volkner

Huh?

Proprietor

After all, Flint's battling Ash in your place. The least you could do is watch.

[Flint sips his coffee.]

Volkner

Sure, whatever.

Proprietor

Then it's settled.

[Flint and Ash look at each other, and smile.]

[Cut to Team Rocket.]

James

The Sunyshore Gym. Fetching!

Jessie

So, how do we go about fetching Pikachu?

Meowth

Piece of cake. I say we dig!

[Jessie and James bring out their shovels.]

Jessie & James

That's our kind of gig!

[A bottle cap rolls along the ground.]

Meowth

Huh? James, you're shedding.

James

(Panicking) Argh! My bottle cap! The rarest of the rare!

[The bottle cap falls flat. A robot rolls to the item and picks it up with a pair of tweezers.]

Cleaning Mech

Trash identified. Disposing.

James

That's not trash, that's treasure!

[The robot rolls away.]

James

You robotic brute!

[James throws his shovel down and goes after the robot. Jessie, Meowth, and Wobbuffet react in surprise. The former two sigh. Meanwhile, At Sunyshore Gym, a battlefield takes place between Ash and Flint. A robot referees the game.]

Ref-bot

Attention. The three-on-three Pokémon battle between Flint of the Elite Four, and Ash from Pallet Town will now get underway. And, begin.

Flint

Ready or not!

[Flint deploys his Infernape.]

Ash Ketchum

So Flint's using Infernape. OK, Buizel, I choose you!

Ash's Buizel

Bui!

Dawn

Flint's using a Fire-type so Ash's got the advantage using Buizel, which is a Water type.

Brock

Right. When it comes to type advantage, Buizel's moves are super-effective on Infernape and not very effective the other way around.

Proprietor

(To Volkner) Well, well. It's been a while since you've seen Flint in a battle, isn't that right?

Volkner

I really don't care.

Ash Ketchum

Buizel! Water Gun, let's go!

[Buizel shoots water.]

Flint

Dodge it, quick!

[Infernape jumps to dodge the move.]

Ash Ketchum

Now use Ice Punch!

[Buizel jumps with an icy fist.]

Flint

Block that move!

[Infernape blocks Ice Punch, receiving ice on his fists.]

Ash Ketchum

Buizel, Sonic Boom!

[A crescent heads toward Infernape.]

Flint

Smash it, Infernape!

[Infernape uses the ice on its fists to break the crescent.]

Ash Ketchum

Use Aqua Jet!

[Buizel surrounds itself in a watery aura and charges toward Infernape.]

Flint

Now, Flare Blitz!

[Infernape surrounds itself in a fiery aura and charges toward the approaching Buizel. After a strain, Infernape wins out. Buizel crashes to the ground and faints.]

Ash Ketchum

Buizel!

Ash's Buizel

(Weakly) Bui-bui...

Ref-bot

Buizel is unable to battle. The winner is Infernape.

Dawn

Buizel was beaten in one move?

Brock

I guess type advantage doesn't mean a thing in Infernape's case.

Proprietor

Impressive, eh?

Volkner

No, it's typical. I've seen it all before. I've fought countless weak challengers and they're all confident at first.

Ash Ketchum

Thank you, Buizel. Return. All right Infernape, I choose you!

Ash's Infernape

Infernape!

Dawn

Whoa! Infernape versus Infernape!

Brock

A battle of the fire types.

Ash Ketchum

Infernape, use Flamethrower!

Ash's Infernape

Infernape!

[Infernape shoots Flamethrower.]

Flint

Quick! Smash it!

[Flint's Infernape obeys.]

Ash Ketchum

Flame Wheel, let's go!

[Ash's Infernape runs and rolls into a ball.]

Flint

Knock it away!

[Flint's Infernape blocks the move.]

Ash Ketchum

Use Mach Punch!

[Ash's Infernape glows its fist and gets ready to punch.]

Flint

Deflect it!

[Flint's Infernape blocks the fist of Ash's Infernape.]

Ash Ketchum

Use Mach Punch, once more!

[Ash's Infernape goes close to Flint's Infernape and executes Mach Punch repeatedly in close range.]

Flint

I'll show you what a real Mach Punch looks like!

Ash Ketchum

Huh?

Flint

Go!

[Flint's Infernape twinkles its eyes and unleashes a huge Mach Punch which sends Ash's Infernape flying and crashing to the ground, fainting.]

Ash Ketchum

Infernape!

Ash's Infernape

(Weakly) Fernape...

Ref-bot

Ash's Infernape is unable to battle. The winner is Flint's Infernape.

Dawn

Just one move again.

Brock

Flint's not in the Elite Four for nothing.

Ash Ketchum

Great job, Infernape. Take a long rest.

[Volkner stands up, glumly.]

Dawn

What's wrong, Volkner?

Proprietor

Hold it.

Volkner

I've seen enough.

Proprietor

You should watch this until the end.

Volkner

(Annoyed) It's a waste of time.

Proprietor

Oh, I see. So you've completely lost touch with your feelings. You must have, if you can't sense Ash's spark.

[Volkner continues standing.]

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu, you're up!

Ash's Pikachu

(Determined) Pika-ka!

[Pikachu steps forward.]

Dawn

(Pleased) I thought he'd use Pikachu for the last round.

Dawn's Piplup

(Excited) Piplup!

Brock

Yeah, but for Ash, this is do or die, while Flint's only used Infernape the whole time.

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu, Quick Attack, let's go!

[Pikachu charges into Infernape's chest and bounces off. Pikachu lands, determined.]

Flint

Say, Pikachu's been trained well. Flare Blitz, now!

[Infernape surrounds itself in a fiery aura and takes off.]

Ash Ketchum

Push it back with Volt Tackle!

[The two Pokemon collide together, causing an explosion. Pikachu calls out, hurt.]

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu, no!

[As soon as the smoke clears, Infernape stays standing, calling out impressed.]

Dawn

Awesome.

Brock

Pikachu's amazing, enduring Flare Blitz by using Volt Tackle.

Proprietor

(To Volkner) Well? feeling anything now?

[Volkner just looks ahead, unimpressed.]

Flint

(Chuckles) Guess we can seriously mix it up. Right, pal?

Flint's Infernape

Infernape!

Flint

Mach Punch, let's go!

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu, Iron Tail!

Ash's Pikachu

Pika!

[As the two Pokemon make contact, Infernape wins out. Pikachu is hurt and sent flying and crashing into the wall. Brock and Dawn gasp as Pikachu falls to the ground.]

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu!

[Pikachu resolutely gets up again.]

Ash Ketchum

All right! Keep it up!

[Volkner keeps looking ahead.]

Flint

Use Close Combat!

[Infernape scoops Pikachu up in the air with its foot and punches in close range. It then chops him down toward the ground.]

Ash's Pikachu

Pika!

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu, hang in there! Use Thunderbolt, quick!

Ash's Pikachu

Pikachuuu!

[Pikachu twists and uses Thunderbolt, which Infernape blocks as the former falls to the ground.]

Flint

Pikachu using Thunderbolt while falling through the air? All right, use Flare Blitz, now!

[Infernape surrounds itself in a fiery aura and dives toward the target.]

Ash Ketchum

Dodge it!

[Infernape hits and blasts Pikachu with the move.]

Ash's Pikachu

Pika!

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu! You okay?

Ash's Pikachu

(Struggling) Pikachu!

[Pikachu, wounded, gets up.]

Proprietor

You may remember the same thing happened when you first fought alongside Flint.

[A flashback plays of Volkner battling with Flint. Houndoom attacks Volkner's Pikachu with Flamethrower.]

Young Volkner

Pikachu, are you okay?

[Pikachu gets up slowly.]

Volkner's Pikachu

Pikachu!

[The flashback ends. Volkner just looks ahead.]

Ash Ketchum

Now, use Quick Attack!

[Pikachu hits Infernape's chest again.]

Flint

All right, Close Combat!

[With Pikachu touching it, Infernape hits Pikachu repeatedly with the move and kicks him away.]

Ash Ketchum

Show them it's not over! Thunderbolt, let's go!

[Pikachu uses Thunderbolt in mid-air.]

Flint

Use Flare Blitz!

[Flare Blitz hits and blasts Pikachu again. Ash runs to try and catch Pikachu.]

Ash Ketchum

I'm coming, Pikachu!

[Ash saves Pikachu from crashing to the wall. Volkner gasps, while Dawn, Brock and Piplup are concerned.]

Dawn

Ash, no!

Dawn's Piplup

Piplup!

Ash Ketchum

(Groans) Pikachu, are you okay?

Ash's Pikachu

(Grateful) Pikachu.

Ash Ketchum

Man, I'm glad.

Proprietor

You know, that looks an awful lot like you back in the day.

[Another flashback plays. An angry Houndoom growls at Volkner and his Pikachu.]

Young Flint

Volkner!

Young Volkner

Volt Tackle!

[Volkner's Pikachu tries a Volt Tackle, but is blasted by Houndoom's Flamethrower. Volkner catches Pikachu before it hits the tree, having him colliding with the tree.]

Young Volkner

Pikachu! Pikachu, are you okay?

Volkner's Pikachu

(Determined) Pika!

Young Volkner

All right, let's go!

Volkner's Pikachu

(Determined) Pika!

[Houndoom charges again.]

Young Volkner

Use Thunderbolt!

[Volkner's Pikachu electrocutes Houndoom with Thunderbolt. The flashback ends.]

Proprietor

I'd never seen a more electrifying team than you two. I stopped being a poacher after that day. After all, that was the most electrifying battling I had ever seen. So Volkner, I'd say you still have some unfinished Gym leader business to take care of, don't you think?

[Volkner has a think.]

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu, use Volt Tackle!

Ash's Pikachu

(Determined) Pikachu!

Flint

Now, use Mach Punch!

[As they both take off, the two Pokemon collide together, causing an explosion. Pikachu is blasted away from the explosion and falls to the ground.]

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu!

[Volkner's thoughts play in his mind.]

Young Volkner

Use Volt Tackle!

[A flashback shows. Volkner's Pikachu collides into Houndoom with Volt Tackle. The flashback ends.]

Ash's Pikachu

(Determined) Pika!

[Cut to Ash. Young Volkner blends and echoes in to Ash's voice.]

Ash & Young Volkner

I know you can do it, Pikachu!

[Volkner perks up.]

Ash Ketchum

All right, Volt Tackle one more time!

Ash's Pikachu

Pikachu!

[Volkner's Flashback plays again.]

Young Volkner

Use Volt Tackle, again!

Volkner's Pikachu

(Driven) Pika!

[Volkner watches on. On a double-screen, Ash and Young Volkner appear side-by-side, copying their attacking poses.]

Ash & Young Volkner

And go!

[The two charging Pikachu merge together into one.]

Flint

Use Thunder Punch, now!

[Infernape charges its electric fist and punches. The two moves collide together, causing an explosion. Flint and Ash brace themselves from the smoke.]

Ash Ketchum

(Grunts) Pikachu!

[As soon as the smoke clears, Pikachu has fainted.]

Ash's Pikachu

(Weakly) Pika...

Ref-Bot

Pikachu is unable to battle. Infernape is the winner, and the victory goes to Flint, of the Elite Four.

[Ash picks up Pikachu.]

Ash Ketchum

Pikachu, hang in there.

Ash's Pikachu

Pikachu.

Ash Ketchum

You battled hard. Thank you.

Brock

It was a great battle.

Dawn

You battled a member of the Elite Four.

Dawn's Piplup

Piplup!

Ash Ketchum

Thanks. We are going to work hard and get stronger than ever, right?

Ash's Pikachu

Pikachu.

[Volkner watches on. Cut to Team Rocket. James is still in tears.]

Meowth

Yo' James, keep it up and you're going to dehydrate.

James

Get off it. You'll never know the pain such loss can bring.

Jessie

Hmm... Focus your mind on this city. Solar power runs the whole show.

Meowth

Yeah, and on top of that little fun fact, Sunyshore tower runs the whole show! Imagine if we made that baby our happy home.

Jessie

We'd climb the ladder to Sinnoh success so fast our heads would spin!

James

Win win! Revenge will be sweet for stealing my bottle cap. (Shouts) The tower is mine!

Jessie

Whoa!

Meowth

Lame logic, but it works.

Wobbuffet

Wob-buffet!

[Back in the Gym.]

Volkner

Looks like I still have some unfinished business, after all.

Flint

Huh?

Volkner

A Gym Leader's job is to make sure that every bit of that spark is passed along to all challengers.

Flint

(Elated) Volkner! You mean it?

Volkner

Thanks to you and the Proprietor, you finally made me realize that.

Proprietor

I think Ash is the one who you should be thanking.

[Volkner meets up with Ash.]

Volkner

You were brilliant, Ash. All of your spark, and that of your Pokémon. Watching you battle inspired me more than I can say.

Ash Ketchum

Thanks. Does that mean you'll have a Gym battle with me?

Volkner

Yes, and an electrifying one too.

Dawn

(Delighted) Oh, Ash!

Brock

(Delighted) That's awesome!

Ash Ketchum

(Delighted) Yeah! I can't wait!

Ash's Pikachu

(Delighted) Pika, Pika!

Narrator

Ash's spark has ignited Gym leader Volkner's spark once again! Up next, Volkner versus Ash, a guaranteed electrifying gym battle, as the journey continues!

[The caption "To Be Continued" shows at the bottom of the screen. The credits appear.]
