For the variant appearing in the games, see Cynthia.

Cynthia is a character appearing in Pokémon the Series, who is the Pokémon Champion of the Sinnoh region. In Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Cynthia returns as one of the top-eight Pokémon Trainers in the world within the World Coronation Series, currently being ranked second.

Appearance[]

This section, or a part of it, has been transcluded from Cynthia; any changes involving it should be made there instead. /

Cynthia is a tall and slender young lady with gray eyes and wavy knee‐length creamy‐blonde hair that covers her left eye with bangs. Cynthia wears black straight‐leg trousers, a long black coat with a V‐neck and black fur rimming its cuffs and hem, and a teardrop‐shaped pearl on the center of the coat. Under the coat, she dons a black top. Cynthia's outfit is finished with black kitten‐heel pumps possessing each a yellow stripe. For accessories, Cynthia wears a black fur ruff around her neck with two pairs of hair clips on each side of her hair, both teardrop shaped and possessing each a yellow stripe.

Black & White series[]

Due to the climate of the east coast of Unova, Cynthia changed her outfit. She wears a light-blue top with a medium-sized collar and a teardrop-shaped pearl, a blue ribbon tied on her waist, and she wears open-toed high-heel pumps.

Journeys series[]

Cynthia's appearance remains the same as it is in Pokémon: Diamond & Pearl series. However, she also has a Key Stone embedded in her lip balm, and she uses it to Mega Evolve her Garchomp. She is also observed with a pale pink gel manicure while her fingernails are maintained short, terminating at her fingers' extremes. In addition, Cynthia has a Dynamax Band that she would wear whenever she was battling in Galar.

Personality[]

Cynthia has an overwhelmingly strong and independent personality. Always up for a good challenge, she never restrains her potential, as shown by her multiple battles throughout the series. It is also clear that she wants to help other Trainers grow and expand bonds with their own Pokémon. Despite being clear during battles and Pokémon treatment, she can be indecisive when it comes to sweets such as ice cream.

She also assists Ash and the group when they are trying to stop criminal organizations such as Team Galactic and later Team Rocket who wants to conquer the Unova region by using Meloetta and the legendary Tao trio. She once again stopping Team Galactic from using Heatran and one of Arceus' Plates from bringing back Cyrus, the Team Galactic Boss.

Prior to her battle with Ash, Cynthia contemplated retiring from Pokémon battling. Her vast experience likely made her feel she reached the zenith of her potential. Once she lost to Ash in battle she abandoned this mindset, realizing she still had a lot to learn from battling and feeling the thrill of battling a passionate opponent who for the first time gave her a challenge and prevail.

Biography[]

In her youth, Cynthia took in a Pokémon Egg, which subsequently hatched into a Gible. She shared a strong bond with her, who eventually evolved into Garchomp. She travelled with it and caught a Feebas.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl[]

When the heroes encountered Lucian, the latter told them that he, along the rest, were members of the Elite Four. He reminded that they were powerful Trainers, who had to be defeated in order to challenge the Champion, Cynthia.[1] Lucian later challenged Cynthia, whose Garchomp easily defeated his Bronzong.

Elsewhere, Cynthia was trying to decide on an ice cream flavor. She then wanted all of the flavors, annoying Team Rocket (who posed as ice cream salesmen). She studied a rock for a bit, until Paul approached her. Paul wanted to battle her, which Cynthia complied to, seeing he wanted to challenge the Sinnoh League. Paul sent his Murkrow, Weavile, Chimchar, and Torterra, and only the latter dealt a blow on Garchomp with Frenzy Plant. However, Garchomp quickly defeated all four Pokémon, before Paul surrendered the match. Regardless, Cynthia believed this to be a good match and reminded him to heal his Pokémon. Since Nurse Joy was busy with other tasks, Cynthia healed Paul's Pokémon. She noted they were in a great shock, as she gave them a pill and some water, but noticed they were all well trained.

As Paul and Ash were arguing, Cynthia took them to the rock she studied a bit earlier. She showed an inscription on the rock: "When every life meets another life, new life will be born." She admitted she also wanted to become stronger, and that was why she met a lot of people and Pokémon to achieve that goal, to learn much from others. It was why she also wanted to meet Dialga and Palkia, too. After Chimchar got taken by Team Rocket, Paul quickly retrieved his Chimchar back, but was advised by Cynthia to spend a night at the Pokémon Center to look after it. She bid farewell to the group, as she went to Celestic Town to see the Adamant Orb.[2] Paul had Chimchar fight Garchomp under these hard conditions to bring out its power, by activating its Blaze Ability.[3] Encountering Paul once more, Paul confronted Ash about entering the Wallace Cup. Ash and Brock reminded him about Cynthia's words and asked him what those words meant to him, but Paul did not want to elaborate.[4]

Cynthia went to Celestic Town, where she met up with her grandmother, Prof. Carolina, who studied the Lustrous Orb. She also met up with the heroes before Cyrus arrived, posing as a businessman of an industrial complex. They first inspected a giant slab, depicting three Mythical Pokémon, two of which Ash and Dawn identified as Mesprit and Azelf. Cynthia and Carolina were in shock that they knew of these Pokémon and were told they encountered them already on Lake Verity and Valor. Cynthia described the third Pokémon to be Uxie from Lake Acuity, and her grandma felt that this Legendary trio also protected humanity.

As Team Galactic triggered an explosion at the ruins, everyone was in distress until Team Galactic's forces surrounded the laboratory. Cynthia noticed the explosion was a distraction, so she sent Garchomp to battle Saturn's Bronzor, leaving the rest to protect the Lustrous Orb. However, Saturn threatened to hurt them if the Lustrous Orb was not handed to them, to which Cynthia went to send another Pokémon to defend herself.[5] Her Garchomp and Gastrodon retaliated against Mars's Bronzor and Saturn's Toxicroak's attacks. After Team Rocket escaped with the Lustrous Orb, the group rejoined at the Pokémon Center, where Cynthia reminded them about the importance of the Lustrous Orb and Adamant Orb, being tied to Palkia and Dialga.

Ash was still upset to see Chimchar wounded from the attacks, but Cynthia explained he had to look to the future, instead of feeling guilty over past mistakes. As Team Galactic captured the Lustrous Orb, Cyrus later rejoined Cynthia and others, who felt guilty about letting the enemy take the Lustrous Orb. Cyrus claimed they had no reason to feel guilty, as they did their best to protect the Lustrous Orb. The next day, Cynthia nevertheless thanked the heroes for their help, before receiving a letter of a battle challenge. The heroes wondered what they could do next about Team Galactic, to which Cynthia felt that they would be prepared for their next attacks.[6] Upon meeting up with Aaron of the Elite Four, the heroes noticed this was the challenger that had sent Cynthia the letter.[7]

Aaron, facing Cynthia, used Drapion to battle her Garchomp. Moments later, Cynthia's Gastrodon defeated Aaron's Beautifly and earned Cynthia the victory.[8] While Ash faced Paul in a full battle, upon seeing Chimchar confident, Brock was reminded of Cynthia's words. He felt that Chimchar played a key part between the two rivals, as noted by Cynthia.[9] As Team Galactic was capturing Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, Cynthia had the heroes enter her car as they went to stop the enemy. She informed them they were to meet Looker, who was investigating activities at Mt. Coronet. She was also aware that Team Galactic attempted to take control over Dialga and Palkia. However, the powers of Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf warped the heroes away from Cynthia's car to Team Galactic HQ, to rescue them.[10] Seeing a helicopter of Team Galactic flying to Mt. Coronet, Cynthia decided to go there, following them near the gateway to the Spear Pillar.

While the other superiors of Team Galactic went through the portal, Cynthia had Garchomp bind Jupiter by surprise, knocking out her Skuntank, and restraining Jupiter herself. After Cynthia freed the hostages, they went after Cyrus and his other two Commanders, Mars and Saturn. As Cyrus used Dialga and Palkia to open a new world, Cynthia had the heroes attack the Red Chain to free the Legendary Pokémon. In the end, Cynthia apprehended the Galactic Commanders, after Cyrus was lost in the world that was destroyed by Dialga and Palkia. Before departing, Cynthia reminded the heroes that Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf chose them to bond with because they cared about Pokémon a lot. She bid them farewell, reminding that they saved the Sinnoh region.[11]

Cynthia was seen battling against Palmer's Milotic with her Garchomp.[12]

Flint remembered Cynthia and her Garchomp, having grown courage to face them in battle.[13] Cynthia attended the Sinnoh Pokémon League competition with President Charles Goodshow, watching the competition from the audience with President Goodshow.[14][15] She stopped by a stand run by Team Rocket (in disguise), but was unsure what to eat. At the end of the day, she noticed that in the next round, Ash would have to face his rival, Paul.[16] Cynthia watched Ash and Paul's battle, noticing the former's Infernape evolved since it was Paul's Chimchar.[17] She continued to watch their battle,[18] and once Ash won, she noticed he was gone. She went to his friends, thinking that he went to meet up with Paul for one final time.[19] She then watched the semifinal match between Ash and Tobias.[20]

The heroes watched Flint's Infernape battle against her Garchomp's powerful Stone Edge on live television. Ash enjoyed watching the battle and became determined to become a stronger trainer who will defeat the Champion someday.[21]

Pokémon the Series: Black & White[]

Cynthia with Ash, Iris and Cilan

Cynthia meeting Iris and Cilan.

Cynthia met Ash once again in Unova, and she was introduced to his new friends, Iris and Cilan. She told them of the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup. Upon learning of it, the three of them decided to come with Cynthia and participate. On the way to Cynthia's villa, she almost hit an injured Meloetta with her car, but stopped in time. She figured out it was suffering from a fever and gave Ash, Iris, and Cilan instructions on how to make it feel better. She asked Iris and Cilan to find a Berry for her while she and Ash find some ice. Upon reaching a river, she was revealed to have a Glaceon, which she commands to use Ice Beam to freeze the water.

They broke the ice and took it to Meloetta, to have it recover. She then received a telephone call, asked to return to Virbank City. After it recovered a little, Iris asked Cynthia if she could battle her and her Garchomp while she used Axew. She agreed, and the battle got underway. Even though Axew learned Giga Impact during the battle, Garchomp proved to be way too strong for Axew. Cynthia stopped Garchomp from attacking and ended the battle before Axew could get hurt. Later, when boarding the plane destined for eastern Unova, Cynthia advised Ash that someone he knew was expecting them at her villa at Undella Town.[22]

Ash and his friends arrived in Undella Town, the location of Cynthia's villa. On their way, they saw certain Pokémon, which Cynthia described them to have originated from other regions. At the villa, which Cynthia used for vacations, Ash was reunited with Dawn for the first time since his journey in the Sinnoh region. After that, Cynthia watched the battle between Dawn and Cilan.[23] Cynthia went with the heroes to the site of the Junior Cup tournament. She was seen talking with Alder, who tried to charm her. She also met Trip for the first time and later participated in an exhibition match between Caitlin, whom she had known before. Using her Garchomp against Caitlin's Gothitelle, neither side won, but Cynthia praised Caitlin's skills. This battle was followed by the beginning of the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup.[24] Cynthia helped Iris with Dragonite's disobedience. She managed to pet him and told him to relax, seeing it was not comfortable being around humans.

She later ran into Trip and was surprised he was not watching the matches. Trip assured her he already planned his strategies against his opponents, surprising her with his confidence, to which she wished him luck. She continued to watch the battles, seeing if Dragonite started to listen to Iris, the team would become very powerful.[25] She observed Iris and Ash's battle in the second semifinal match, and, while everyone was convinced, Dragonite began to listen to Iris. Cynthia knew he was going by instinct. After Iris lost, Cynthia revealed to everyone that Dragonite does not fully trust Iris yet and witnessed Ash's loss to Trip.[26] She then watched Trip battle Alder, and the former lost to the champion. She would later referee Ash and Dawn's battle, noting that the children showed great prowess through their journeys. She eventually stopped their battle, seeing it did not matter who won, as both Ash and Dawn were strong. She later saw Dawn off as she traveled to Johto.[27]

Cynthia went away on business and learned from Jervis that Meloetta was training with Ash. She replied to him she would be returning soon. When she did, Ash, Pikachu, and Meloetta have already been captured by Team Rocket and taken to the Abyssal Ruins. She asked Ridley, who was protecting Meloetta, about the latter's power.[28] Cynthia, Ridley, Iris, and Cilan were traveling by boat to the Ruins. She sent out Garchomp to battle the forces of nature: Landorus, Thundurus, and Tornadus. She saw Iris protect Dragonite, which strengthened their bond and allowed him to obey her. After Team Rocket retreated, Cynthia stated there were people who would fight back, as their desire was not to conquer. She hoped one day all people would hear Meloetta's song, which made her happy. She later bid Ridley and Meloetta farewell as they departed to go back into hiding once more with the rest of Ridley's fellow guardians.[29] Cynthia and Jervis advised Ash that the Unova League would take place in Vertress City and advised them to go past Opelucid City. Cynthia and Jarvis wished Ash luck before he, Iris, and Cilan left.[30]

Pokémon Journeys: The Series[]

After Ash's World Coronation Series battle with Volkner, Volkner commented on how Ash's skill may be able to get him to the Master Class. While explaining the Master Class, Volkner alluded to Cynthia being one of Ash's future opponents. As the battle was broadcasted across the Pokémon world, Cynthia was watching a segment of Ash's Ultra Class battle on a television while walking in a town.[31]

Cynthia & Pikachu

Cynthia seeing Pikachu again

Cynthia encountered Ash, Pikachu and Goh while they were investigating a town in Johto that had been caught in an endless night. Goh and Ash then talked to Cynthia about a girl they met earlier and a Pokémon that they thought was an Unown. The three then met up with Tiara and her mother and asked if the Pokémon she had seen the previous day was an Unown which Tiara confirmed. After explaining how she had met the Unown, Tiara became upset, claiming she wanted to see the stars as the Unown had made it endless night's to help her to find her Cleffa again. This caused the Unown to attack Cynthia, Ash, and Goh, but were eventually defeated thanks to Cynthia's Garchomp. Tiara apologized for being selfish and the town became day again.[32]

Cynthia appeared in a fantasy in "A Battle of Mega Versus Max!," along with other Masters Eight Trainers.

Ash and Chloe met her at the Canalave Library, looking for information about Palkia. When they exited the library later, they were attacked by the parallel world‘s Team Rocket. Cynthia battled against them, forcing them to retreat, with Ash and Chloe pursuing them to their world. During the climax of the battle between Dialga and Palkia in "Showdown at the Gates of Warp!," Cynthia found a portal where she could see Ash and the others. When they reunited and asked Arceus to help, Cynthia joined the residents of the normal world and the parallel world. When it all came to an end, Cynthia welcomed Ash, Dawn, Goh, and Chloe on their arrival in the normal world.[33]

During the Sinnoh Fair in JNS01, Cynthia reunited with Ash, Goh, and Dawn again and revealed that she was organizing part of the event. Next, Cynthia gave a lecture and details for them about the Sinnoh region's past. At the end of the event, Cynthia hosted a catching competition where the three should capture one of the Pokémon that were given to Trainers from the region's bygone eras: Cyndaquil, Oshawott, and Rowlet. Upon completing the objectives, Cynthia gave each of them a book with the ancient history of Sinnoh.

A short time later, unaware that Team Galactic had returned, Dawn contacted Cynthia to help with a strange phenomenon occurring at Mount Coronet in JNS02 and in the next episode. Cynthia joined Ash, Dawn, Brock, and Goh in battle during the return of Team Galactic, who sought to rescue Cyrus from the dimension he was trapped in. Cynthia single-handedly defeated Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn's Pokémon using her Roserade and lent Garchomp so Brock could help save a Heatran that was out of control.

In JNS04, Cynthia arrested the Team Galactic Commanders as they tried to escape, joining then Ash and his friends. Together, they asked for help from Arceus who, together with Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, avoided the worst. Lastly, Cynthia watched along with Brock while Ash and his friends tried to save Heatran from inside the massive monster formed by Arceus's Plates.

Cynthia was revealed to be one of the eight competitors in the Master Class of the World Coronation Series, ranked second.[34]

She reappeared during the opening of the Masters Eight Tournament.[35]

After Lance was defeated by Diantha in the eliminations of Masters Eight, she battled Iris, sending her Gastrodon as her first Pokémon against Iris's Excadrill. She won the match after revealing that she had a Garchompite, where Mega Garchomp defeated Iris' Haxorus.[36] After Ash defeated Steven Stone, Ash advanced to the semi-finals to face Cynthia in battle for the first time.[37]

Before Cynthia went to fight Ash, she shared her plans to retire from battling with Diantha, once the tournament was over.[38] Prior to her match with Ash, she was busy training with Garchomp when Ash was accidentally dragged into her area by his overly-affectionate Dragonite. She proceeded to explain to Ash, Goh, Vic and Toria her relationship with her Garchomp. After looking for Toria and watching a wild Eldegoss fly away, Vic remembered about Leon's match, where she and the others watched Diantha lose to Leon.[39]

During her match against Ash, she had the initial advantage when her Spiritomb unexpectedly knocked out half of Ash's team, including his ace Pikachu along with it, taking advantage of the fact that he rarely switched his Pokémon out to handle dynamic threats. Cynthia kept this tactic of switching her Pokémon consistently to type-matchups and field control to catch him off guard.[40] However, Ash kept maintaining his pace and defeated Cynthia's Roserade and Milotic. Her biggest surprise for Ash was deciding to Dynamax her Togekiss after Garchomp took a large amount of damage battling his Sirfetch’d. Despite this, she, alongside her Togekiss and Garchomp, were ultimately defeated by Ash’s Mega Lucario in their match. She thanked him for the battle and later met with Diantha. Due to the inspiration the match with Ash gave her, Cynthia ultimately decided against retiring.[41]

After watching the full battle of Ash against Leon end in the former's victory, she and an equally excited Diantha decided to have a Pokémon battle after the awards ceremony.[42]
