Corbeau comes from Latin corvus, meaning "raven". It evolved through Late Latin corbellus ("little raven") to Old French corbel or corbiau, and finally to modern French corbeau. Besides its literal meaning, it can also refer figuratively to anonymous letter writers or priests in black robes.
