Biography[]

Pokémon the Series: The Beginning[]

Charles and Officer Jenny followed the torchbearers in order to see that they made their way safely to the Plateau. Ash saw the opportunity to carry the torch and wanted to do so. However, Officer Jenny tried to stop him, saying that he looked like a troublemaker. Charles stepped in and defended Ash, while also telling Officer Jenny that how a person looked on the outside wasn't as important as who they were on the inside, and let Ash run with the torch. Ash mistook him as the Santa Claus, but Jenny reminded him that Charles was the president of the League committee.

Although Team Rocket took the torch, Charles revealed he had a lantern just in case the flame got doused. As the group reached the stadium, Charles reminded that the League would be filled with many people, both the audience and participating Trainers. He expected the heroes to be at the opening ceremony, who promised to do that. On the opening day of Indigo League, Charles was at the opening ceremony, in which Team Rocket stole the flame once more, but Ash defeated them and secured the flame. In the end, Charles made a speech to the Trainers they can win as long as they love and trust their Pokémon.[1]

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver[]

The heroes met Charles at the Johto League, where he was handing out balloons to sponsor the League. He asked of Ash to show determination at the League, who promised to give his best. Before the start of the first round, Charles explained that three Trainers would have to battle each other, and the one with the most victories in that round would pass into the top 16. Later, he watched the opening ceremony, believing that the flame of Ho-Oh would protect the Trainers, who should not have any regrets about participating in the League.[2] Misty and Brock later reminded Ash about Charles' explanation of the first round.[3]

Charles watched the battle between Ash and Gary in the next round.[4][5]

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire[]

Charles was waiting for the torch runner, Tyson, to arrive, and Nurse Joy assured him everything would be fine. He was glad to see Tyson arriving in time, and was pleased to meet Ash and Brock, as well as their new friends, May and Max. Once Tyson obtained the torch, Charles invited the heroes into his limousine, in which they drove off to the stadium. Due to Team Rocket's interference, the flame was stolen, so Charles went with the heroes to retrieve it.[6] At the end of the Hoenn League, Charles handed over the Championship Cup trophy to Tyson.[7]

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl[]

Charles was present at the opening of the Sinnoh Pokémon League.[8] He then watched the League battles, sitting next to Cynthia.[9][10][11][12] After the League finals were over, he was later present at the closing ceremony. He was at the podest with Cynthia and the League Champion, Tobias.[13]
