Cacnea (Japanese: サボネア, Hepburn: Sabonea) (CACK-nee-uh) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

Biology

Physiology

Cacnea appear to be round, green Pokémon covered in green spikes. Its arms are different, however because of them being straight instead of round. Cacnea's mouth appears to have a couple of black spots on it, forming its mouth. It has eyes deep into its body with carved holes showing black inside of Cacnea. It also appears to be wearing a crown on top of its head. Cacnea also has giant spikes underneath him, forming its feet that function like footstools.

Behavior

Cacnea live in arid deserts, surviving on tremendously meager amounts of water. The drier and hotter their environments are, the more beautiful and fragrant the flowers on top of their heads grow; the flowers bloom only once a year, but remain fragrant year-round. They uses their flowers’ scents to attract prey, which they shoot down with thorns using Pin Missile. If this fails, Cacnea can also swing their spiky arms at foes like hammers by using Needle Arm. When they find oases, they will gorge themselves with water, filling their hollow bodies. They can last up to 30 days on this stored water.

Cacnea are solitary Pokémon, wandering deserts alone. However, they are not territorial and will allow other Cacnea to pass nearby without conflict. When food is scarce, Cacnea can find sustenance by using Ingrain; they dig their roots deep into the sand to suck up nutrients like plants. However, the sustenance they gain from this is ultimately inefficient for supporting them in the long run, so they must eventually hunt and capture prey in order to survive.

Natural abilities

Cacnea can store water for at least 30 days with their succulent bodies to sustain themselves in their arid habitats.

Evolution

Cacnea evolves into Cacturne once it reaches Level 32.

James' Cacnea.

A Cacnea that James caught was found in AG006: A Poached Ego!. It was caught after his Weezing and Jessie's Arbok were released to protect a herd of Koffing and a pack of Ekans from a Pokémon Poacher. A running gag in the show was that, upon being released from his Poké Ball for battle, Cacnea would promptly elect to painfully hug James' face. In DP054: Once There Were Greenfields, James gave his Cacnea to Gardenia for training.

Trivia

• No other Pokémon had the same egg group as Cacnea and its evolution.
• Cacnea and its evolution are the only Grass-type Pokémon that have the ability Sand Veil.

Origin

Cacnea appears to be based on a mix of a jack-o-lantern and a barrel cactus.

Etymology

Cacnea may come from cactus and Sabonea, its Japanese name.

Sabonea may come from saboten (cactus) and debonair (confident and charming).
