Buzzwole (Japanese: マッシブーン, Hepburn: Masshibuun) (BUZZ-wole[1]), code-named UB-02 Absorption (Japanese: UB02 Expansion), is a Bug/Fighting-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII. It is an Ultra Beast, one of the several species of Pokémon native to Ultra Space. It is the counterpart of the Ultra Beast known as Pheromosa, sharing the same code-number "UB-02".
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Buzzwole is a massive, mosquito-like insectoid Ultra Beast, with a distinctly masculine appearance and a heavily muscular build. The clear muscles all over its body appear to be filled sacs of red blood (likely the blood it has drained from its victims). It posseses thick white veins that are visible, across its large chest, with some visible on its abdomen. It has a small, disk-shaped head with a short bulge from which its face, and facial features stem. Its peculiar disk-shaped head rotates almost robotically; its long, stiff antennae are striped with black and red, poking out from what appears to be small, beady black simple-eyes. There are three short black spikes poking upward from the back of its head. Its most prominent feature is its long, thick, and blade-like sharp sliver proboscis, extending from right below its simple-eyes. It has huge, muscular arms that also contain clear blood-sacs, and large fists with smaller red blood sacs on its five usually clenched digits; two short black spikes protrude from its hefty black shoulders. Its abdomen is thick and striped with red and black, and its four muscular legs taper off into sharp points that serve as the "feet" it supports itself with while standing. It has four orange, veined wings on its upper-back that allow it to fly (two stemming from each side).
Behavior[]
This UB is highly violent, destructive, malevolent and vain; it is shown to be angrily and relentlessly piercing and impaling its prey with its diamond-sharp proboscis to drain blood (which results in death to the victim). Like the rest of its Ultra Beast companions, it is visibly evil, known to be particularly bloodthirsty, drinking the blood of its victims and contain it in its muscles to fuel itself. As shown in "A Mission of Ultra Urgency!", Buzzwole is considered as an unintelligent muscle-brain Ultra Beast, who is particularly proud of its muscular looks. It often flexes its immense muscles and assumes menacing poses to intimidate its opponents, also uttering a hissing sound while doing so (as seen in its animations in Pokémon Sword and Shield). Making such poses, it also appears and acts like a stereotypical supervillain.
Natural abilities[]
According to the Aether Foundation, it is able to absorb the energy of its foes and use it to trigger a chemical reaction, causing its muscles to grow at explosive rates. With its supernatural strength, it is able to pulverize a dump-truck with a single punch. Its proboscis is also said to be a hard as diamond, which it attacks with as well, violently impaling its victims. Its visible white veins are said to be as hard as steel.
Evolution[]
Buzzwole doesn't evolve.

Trivia[]
- Buzzwole has the highest Defense out of any Fighting-type Pokémon and the highest HP stat out of any Bug-type Pokémon.
- Buzzwole is the heaviest Bug-type Pokémon.
- Buzzwole can be seen as a counterpart to Pheromosa. Both are Bug/Fighting-types, but while Buzzwole is exclusive to Sun and masculine-looking, Pheromosa is exclusive to Moon and feminine-looking.
- Despite having a masculine-looking appearance, as seen in "A Mission of Ultra Urgency!", Buzzwole can suck other Pokémon's blood with its proboscis, a characteristic exclusive to female mosquitos. Male mosquitos cannot suck blood
- Buzzwole ranked 8th, among all Pokémon, in the Pokémon of the Year 2021 poll by The Pokémon Company. It also ranked 1st among all Alola Pokémon.
Origin[]
Buzzwole is based on a mosquito, a bodybuilder, and possibly a stereotypical supervillain. Being a counterpart to Pheromosa, it may play off of the Fight Or Flight response theme of the two, with Buzzwole resembling the Fight response and usually relying on raw strength. The black parts of its body may be based on heavy shading techniques used in superhero/supervillain comics/manga, which usually use shading to emphasize a character's muscular appearance.
With the theory that the original seven Ultra Beasts are based on the Seven Deadly Sins, Buzzwole may be based on the Sin of Pride, as it is usually found vainly flexing its muscles or showing off its strength in a prideful manner. It also displays wrathful qualities in the manner in which it attacks its victims.
Etymology[]
Buzzwole may be a combination of buzz, swollen, and swole (slang for muscular).
Masshibūn is a portmanteau of English's massive and ブーン (būn, Japanese onomatopoeia for buzzing). It may also involve 蚊 (bun, Japanese for mosquito).
