I'm Brock, Pewter City's Gym Leader. You can see just by looking at my Pokémon how rock hard my willpower is. My Pokémon are all hard as rock and have true-grit determination! That's right! My Pokémon are all Rock types! Fwahaha! You're going to challenge me even knowing that you'll lose? That's what a Trainer's honor demands! So be it! Show me your best!

Brock serves as the Gym Leader at the Pewter City Gym and holds the Boulder Badge for the trainers that defeat him in a Pokémon battle. In the Pokémon games, Brock specializes in and only uses Rock-type Pokémon.

Appearance[]

Brock is a teenager with brown spiky hair and his eyes naturally appear closed. In Red and Blue, he was shirtless and wears a pair of blue jeans and black shoes. In Yellow, Brock wears a green vest with a black T-shirt with white short sleeves, brown jeans, and green sneakers (according to yellow art). In Gold and Silver, he wears a long-sleeved orange shirt with black lining over a black v-neck shirt and green pants.

Personality[]

Brock, in personality, is quite determined, evident from his nickname “The Rock Solid Pokémon Trainer!" He strongly believes in willpower and determination, and boasts about this fact consistently. He is arrogant and prone to underestimating opponents, especially when it comes to the defenses of his Pokémon, but he still seeks and enjoys a good battle. He is much more respectful to his opponents after the confrontation, and he is able to admit to his faults, specifically the underestimation of his opponent.

Brock finds comfort in areas surrounded by rock and visits Diglett’s Cave. This preference expands to Pokémon as well. He believes rock type Pokémon can be cute, but he also sees them as the embodiment of determination due to their rock-hard exteriors.

Brock shares his desire to be a Pokémon Breeder with his anime counterpart, and he shares the same love for Pokémon in both mediums. It is also implied that he has his flirtatious side in the games too, when he questions why the girls at the Celadon City Gym all ‘turned him away.’

Brock is serious about being a strong trainer. This is to the point where he delays his dreams of becoming a Pokémon Breeder in order to grow stronger, wishing to be strong enough to defeat the Player.

Overall, Brock is a prideful, and determined Trainer with a love for battle, Pokémon, and Rock type Pokémon.

Etymology[]

The name Brock originates from the word "rock".

His Japanese name, Takeshi, originates from 岳 (take, mountain peak) and 石 (ishi, stone). With the plant-themed naming of most Gym Leaders, it may also include 竹 (take, bamboo).

There aren't many serious Pokémon trainers here.
They’re all like Bug Catchers, you know, just hobbyists.
But Pewter Gym's Brock isn’t like that, not one bit.

Pewter City - young man

Brock is cool. He's not just tough.
People like and respect him.
I want to become a Gym Leader like him.

Hi. I'm excavating for fossils here under Mt. Moon.
Sometimes, Brock of Pewter Gym lends me a hand.

Mt. Moon - man

Brock rarely laughs, but is said to be unable to stop if he starts.

Pewter Museum - Pokémon Journal

In this big world of ours, there must be many tough trainers.
Let's both keep training and making ourselves stronger!
