The Boulder Badge is a key item introduced in Generation I.

Description[]

Brock gives a Boulder Badge to a Pokémon Trainer at the Pewter City Gym if the trainer manages to defeat him in battle. The Boulder Badge is the first Gym Badge collected in the Kanto region. The Boulder Badge is depicted as a gray octagon, and its name and gemstone-like appearance is a reference to Brock specializing in Rock-type Pokémon.

Appearances[]

Core series[]

In the Generation I games and their two pairs of remakes, Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, the Boulder Badge is the first Gym Badge that the player has to obtain. It is rewarded by Brock. He also gives them a TM, varying by release: TM034 (Bide) in the Generation I games; TM039 (Rock Tomb) in Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version; and TM001 (Headbutt) in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!.

In addition to being the first Gym Badge obtained, the Boulder Badge also increases the Attack stat of a Pokémon. In all of the Kanto games except Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, the Boulder Badge also enables the player to use HM05 (Flash) outside of battle. Since it is an odd-number badge, the Boulder Badge does not increase the obedience of a Pokémon by maximum level.

In the Generation II games and their remakes Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, the Boulder Badge is the ninth Gym Badge that can be obtained, coming after the first eight Gym Badges obtained in Johto, since the latter half of the game takes place in Kanto.

Pokémon: The Series[]

The Boulder Badge in "TB005: Showdown in Pewter City"

In Pokémon the Series, the Boulder Badge is first seen in "Showdown in Pewter City". Ash is given the Boulder Badge by Brock after defeating him in a Pokémon battle. In "Mystery at the Lighthouse", this was retconned by Takeshi Shudō into Brock giving Ash the Boulder Badge out of pity, though the reason for this is not known.

In "When Regions Collide!", the Boulder Badge is shown by Brock next to Misty's badge, the Cascade Badge. At the end of the episode, Brock gives Sophocles and Kiawe each a Boulder Badge.

Pokémon Origins[]

In Pokémon Origins, Red obtains the Boulder Badge in "File 1: Red" after defeating Brock in battle.

Manga[]

Pokémon Adventures[]

The Boulder Badge in the Pokémon Adventures chapter "RGB005: Onix Is On!"

In Pokémon Adventures, the Boulder Badge is mentioned in "Wanted: Pikachu!". Blue challenges Red to acquire the Boulder Badge before he does, after explaining that Brock hands it out after losing in battle. Blue also states that the Boulder Badge increases a Pokémon's attack power.

In the following chapter, "Onix Is On!", Red and Blue have each managed to earn a Boulder Badge from Brock after defeating him in battle.

Red's Boulder Badge and Cascade Badge are both stolen by Green in "Wartortle Wars" but both are returned by her two chapters later, in "The Jynx Jinx".
