  • Sun

It does not deal well with water, so it lives in dry locales. Since its surroundings tend to lack greenery, it stands out noticeably.

  • Moon

From its eyes, it can expel excess moisture from its body. This liquid is similar in composition to human sweat.

  • Ultra Sun

It discharges moisture from its eyes, making it look like it’s crying—apparently an effective way of getting enemies to let down their guard.

  • Ultra Moon

If its body gets too damp, it will die. So, in a process reminiscent of sweating, its eyes expel moisture.

  • Sword

It expels both sweat and tears from its eyes. The sweat is a little salty, while the tears have a slight bitterness.

  • Shield

This Pokémon lives in dry, rocky areas. As its green spheres dry out, their dull luster increases.

Anime

Brock Bonsly

Brock's Bonsly.

In the anime, Brock also had a Bonsly, and eventually evolved it into a Sudowoodo.

Trivia

  • Bonsly originally made its video game debut in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, but its anime debut was in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. In the English dub, it was pronounced "Bons-lee".
  • Bonsly is said to be a very heavy Pokémon, weighing over 30 lbs., but May never seemed to have a problem carrying one in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
  • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Bonsly appeared as a doll, a game prior to Generation IV.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Bonsly is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Pokéballs. During this time, it uses the move Tackle.
    • However, Bonsly is unable to learn Tackle in any form of main game. Keep in mind, however, that it has to be picked up and thrown (similarly to the Mr. Saturn item) in order to do so.
  • Bonsly is one of the ten Pokémon that evolves upon knowing a move. In this case, it needs to know Mimic.

Origin

Bonsly is based around petrified wood, plants that have become fossilized into stone over long periods of time. Its lower body resembles a flower-pot or diaper, referencing its status as a Baby Pokémon. Its crying habit also references babies, but may also prelude to its evolution's hate for water, as Bonsly's crying is a way of removing moisture from its body rather than due to emotional stress. Its name may also show it is based off of a bonsai tree.

Etymology

Bonsly possibly comes from "bonsai", "lie", and "cry".
