Bastiodon (Japanese: トリデプス Toridepusu) is a Rock/Steel-type Pokémon.

Psychology

Bastiodon is a Pokémon which appears to be a cross between a ceratopsian such as Zuniceratops and a bulldozer. Its dark gray, square head resembles a castle wall, complete with four cream-yellow, window-like spots with a black outline, three dark gray spikes on the top, and two larger gray spikes in the upper corners. Bastiodon's triangular nose extends from the middle of its shield-like head down over its lips and appears to be pierced by a gray, horizontal spike. Four spikes jut downward and four large, blunt tusks protrude upward from its dark gray lower jaw. Bastiodon's cream-yellow eyes are partially obscured by the nasal spike and spaced-out tusks. Its thick, cream-yellow body is further protected by a gray ridge and dark gray plates on its back, jagged growths on its legs, and a plated tail.

Behavior

Bastiodon, though slow, are very defensively strong. They are virtually invulnerable to frontal attacks, as their steel-hard faces can withstand immense damage. Though their rears and sides are not nearly as strong, they still are relatively tough compared to other species. Bastiodon live in herds of 30 or so members. They raise their young until adulthood. When their herds are threatened, Bastiodon will line up side by side and barricade their offspring; these impregnable walls easily defend Shieldon from most predators. This defense, however, is notably weak to aerial attacks. Because their fossils are often found together, it is believed Bastiodon frequently clashed with Rampardos. Their facial bones are so hard and oddly shaped that scientists once thought they were sort of horn or spike until the first Bastiodon was successfully resurrected. Despite their imposing size, Bastiodon are docile creatures. They spend most of their time traveling with their herds in search of Berries and grasses. They are thought to have died out due to an ice age; the cooling climate wiped out many plants, and their sluggishness and herd reliance made remaining lone Bastiodon easy targets for predators.

Evolution

Bastiodon is the evolved form of Shieldon, evolving upon reaching level 30.

Byron's Bastiodon

Trivia

  • Bastiodon bears a slight resemblance to the Helmasaur King from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Both are large monstrous four-legged creatures possessing a powerful front side/face.
    • Coincidentally, Bastiodon's pre-evolution Shieldon bears a resemblance to the more smaller Helmasaurs found within earlier Legend of Zelda titles.

Origin

Bastiodon is based on the Triceratops or Zuniceratops while its facial frill resembles a castle wall or shield.

Etymology

Bastiodon is a portmanteau of bastion (a structure projecting out from a protective wall), Bastille (a fortress in Paris), and -don (either Spanish for "lord," Japanese for "thud," or Greek for "tooth.")

Toridepusu is a portmanteau of 砦 (toride, fortress) and "Triceratops."
