In Shadows of Almia, he is unique among Rangers with the fact he will do a Target Clear without a Pokémon, but rather use brute force while yelling "TARGET CLEAR!", even calling it his trademark Field Move in Operation Brighton. This is first seen after the player rescues him on Team Dim Sun's Cargo Ship, where he crashes through locked doors.
Barlow helps the player when confronted by Team Dim Sun Grunts on the Cargo Ship, though later confronts Kincaid, going up against his Drapion, as the player deals with still more Grunts. He is defeated by Drapion, at which point the player takes over for him and captures Drapion. While, like the other Area Rangers, he is very important in the beginning of the story, when the player advances to the Ranger Union, he is seen less in the game. However, he helps the player several times in Operation Brighton, and rescues Isaac from the trap that Ice of the Sinis Trio set up for him.
In Guardian Signs, he is referred to by Murph when he tries to emulate his human target clear.
