Ash, Iris and Trip: Then There Were Three! (Japanese: サトシ、アイリス、シューティー!最後のバトル!!, HepburnAsh, Iris and Trip! The Last Battle!!) is the 44th episode of Pokémon: BW Rival Destinies.

Synopsis[]

The second match of the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup semi-finals begins, with Ash’s Krokorok and Iris’s Dragonite going head to head! Dragonite has Krokorok reeling after a powerful pair of direct hits, but Krokorok is determined to hang on—and then it evolves into Krookodile! This brings the match to a new level of intensity, and when Krookodile hits Dragonite hard with a supereffective Dragon Claw, Dragonite gets angry—really angry—and starts ignoring Iris yet again, unleashing one undisciplined attack after another. Iris helplessly pleads with Dragonite to pull itself together and calm down, and Ash feels sorry for his friend...but it’s a battle, after all, and he and Krookodile aren’t about to let up. Krookodile wins, and Ash moves on to the finals!

Iris is frustrated and unhappy after her defeat, and the taunting from Georgia and Burgundy doesn’t help. But Cynthia steps in once again, with her experience in training Dragon types, and counsels Iris to keep working on her relationship with the stubborn Dragonite so it can gain confidence in her.

It’s time for the final round! Ash is up against his rival Trip, and confidence is evident on both sides. Ash’s Pignite has the type advantage over Trip’s Serperior, but Serperior’s unbelievable speed makes it virtually impossible for Pignite to land even a single attack! Although Pignite’s determination is remarkable, and Ash tries to even the odds by having Pignite use Flame Charge over and over to boost its own speed, it’s just not enough. A final Frenzy Plant from Serperior ends the battle, and Trip wins the Junior Cup!

This means, of course, that Trip gets the chance he’s been waiting for: a battle with Unova Champion Alder! The battle gets under way, and Trip is again relying on his super-speedy Serperior, while Alder calls on Bouffalant. Can Trip keep up his impressive winning streak against the region’s top Trainer?[1]

Episode plot[]

Alder knows well that Dragonite has the advantage over Krokorok, but he and Freddy will see who will win this battle. Dawn wishes both Ash and Iris luck, but Cilan thinks it all comes down to whether Dragonite will obey Iris or not. Trip doesn't care who wins, for he has his sights set on Alder. Georgia is still displeased that Iris would call herself a Dragon Master, yet cannot control Dragonite, while Burgundy agrees, seeing it as the other way around instead. Krokorok begins with Crunch; and this time, Dragonite heeds Iris' orders to dodge. He also dodges Krokorok's Stone Edge and uses Flamethrower, also per Iris' orders. Cilan is surprised that Dragonite is actually listening to Iris, meaning Ash will have a tough battle. Cynthia, however, believes that Dragonite isn't actually obeying Iris.

Dragonite uses Ice Beam, but Krokorok uses Dig to evade the attack. Krokorok emerges and dodges Dragonite's Flamethrower. Iris is pleased that Dragonite is listening to her. Freddy comments that Dragonite's moves are sharp and precise, worrying Trip. Georgia is baffled, since Dragonite wasn't listening before, thinking Iris must've had an impact on Dragonite. Burgundy replies that Dragonite may have just had a bad start with Iris. Dragonite uses Flamethrower, but misses. However, he repeats the attack, hitting Krokorok. Krokorok evades using Dig, and emerges behind Dragonite, clamping down on his tail. Dragonite tries to shake Krokorok off, spinning around and throwing him down. Dragonite then uses Ice Beam, but misses and gets hit by Stone Edge. Krokorok tries to use Crunch, but misses and gets hit by Flamethrower. Iris is pleased, for she and Dragonite are working as a team.

Cilan has little doubt in Iris winning. Georgia is amazed that Iris is nearing becoming a Dragon Master with Dragonite obeying her. Krokorok tries to use Crunch, but gets hit with back-to-back Flamethrower and Ice Beam. Krokorok has taken serious damage, but, after some encouragement from Ash, gets back up and evolves into Krookodile. Krookodile charges in and uses Dragon Claw, hitting Dragonite hard. After getting back up, Dragonite becomes enraged and starts firing random attacks all over the stadium, sending everyone ducking for cover. Iris tries to calm down Dragonite, who instead intensifies his attacks. Georgia sees that Iris still has a ways to go to become a Dragon Master, with Burgundy thinking it would be a waste of time to evaluate those two.

Iris orders Dragonite to stop fooling around and attack Krookodile, not the stadium itself. Ash feels bad for Iris, but still has to win the battle, so he has Krookodile use Crunch. Dragonite sees it and instead of dodging, allows himself to get bit. Dragonite throws him back and uses Dragon Rush. However, because of his poor timing, Krookodile is able to use Dig to dodge. He follows up with Stone Edge, which defeats Dragonite. Ash hugs Krookodile, while Iris falls to her knees. Dawn admits Iris had a good chance, while Cilan replies that he'd need to understand Dragonite better to know what happened. Outside, Iris is disappointed, for it always ends the same way with Dragonite. Georgia and Burgundy appear, chiding Iris for not able to control Dragonite.

Cynthia appears, letting Iris know that she is not at fault, and that the reason for Dragonite's disobedience is because he was just recently caught by her and does not have full confidence in her yet. Cynthia explains that their bond must be deeper for Dragonite to have trust, which is a trainer's most important goal. Ash leaves to battle Trip, while Iris thanks Cynthia for the advice. Ash is pleased he will battle Trip, who smiles. Trip sends out Serperior and Ash Pignite. Pignite starts with Tackle, though Serperior dodges. Pignite uses Flamethrower, but misses, so uses Flame Charge, but still misses. Serperior uses Solar Beam, but Pignite dodges. Serperior uses Dragon Tail, but misses. Pignite again uses Flame Charge, although Serperior evades. Pignite uses Tackle, followed with Flamethrower, but both attacks miss. Serperior leers Pignite, who dodges.

Serperior uses Dragon Tail, but Pignite dodges and uses Flame Charge, but still misses Serperior, who is too fast for him. Pignite uses Flame Charge, but misses. Serperior uses Leer on Pignite, who jumps, but gets hit by Solar Beam. Pignite stands up and uses Fire Pledge, but Serperior somehow still manages to dodge. Using Frenzy Plant, Serperior defeats Pignite. Ash calls Pignite back, thanking for the battle. With the battle over, Trip wins the Cup. Later, Alder gives him the trophy and is looking forward to a battle with Trip. Ash is disappointed that he lost to Trip again, especially in the finals. Dawn reminds him that Pignite showed a lot of courage, so Ash regains confidence and vows to train and defeat Trip one day.

Trip lets Alder know he wants to defeat him, who replies this will be even more fun than he imagined. Alder sends out Bouffalant and Trip brings out Serperior. The heroes see Trip is putting all his faith in Serperior. Serperior starts with Solar Beam, targeting Bouffalant.
