Personality[]
Ash still has some of his childish excitement, but he also demonstrated much greater maturity and level-headiness since entering the Kalos region, both in battles and out. Also, Ash is completely opened to advice from others. Through his journey, Ash realized his impatience needed fixing, especially for battles, due to it not only causing him to lose a Gym Battle but was also affecting his bond with one of his Pokémon, although his fear of losing his Pokémon family also did him in. Through his maturity, Ash hardly loses his temper and even keep his cool more, which is shown when he would lose a battle, as he doesn't hardly get worked up then he used to in the past.

Ash and Sawyer would always give it their all during their battles. Ash supports Sawyer and he has supported him as he stays to watch him battle in finals in the Kalos League, after he lost to him in the Semi-Finals.
Alain[]
Right away, Ash and Alain not only became rivals but they formed a close friendship with one another. They competed in the Kalos League finals against each other. After an extremely close battle, Ash lost to Alain but was glad he had that battle with his friend. However, Ash and Alain nearly lost their friendship when he found out his ties with Team Flare. Although, Ash deep down knew that Alain was still his friend despite all the mistakes he made and everything he did. Realizing that he was tricked into helping Team Flare, unaware about their real plans, never wanted to hurt anyone, had good intentions which was to help his best friend, Mairin, along with her partner Pokémon, Chespie, and seeing that he was torn about what to do, Ash was not only able to talk some sense into Alain but also encourage him to do what was right and assuring him that no matter they'll always be friends till the end. They worked together to stop Team Flare once and for all which they succeed. After the crisis was over, Ash helped Alain get over his depression as he still felt guilty for everything that has happen and inspired him to start over by going on a new journey with his best friend. Also, Ash and Alain both promise to battle each other again one day.
Pokémon[]
Greninja[]
Greninja was the first Pokémon Ash obtained in the Kalos region. Ash met Greninja when he used to be a Froakie, where Froakie saw something special in him and decided to let him be his Trainer. Ash trained Greninja to his full potential, which led him to evolve into his first stage, Frogadier. After evolving into his final stage of evolution, Ash and Greninja gained a special power through their bond, which is known as the "Bond Phenomenon" as it rivals the power of Mega Evolution.
However, they both had trouble perfecting the form, due to Ash's fear of losing his Pokémon family and Greninja's insincerity. Their flaws ended up getting the better of them, which put a strain in their bond. After realizing how far they let their flaws get to them, Ash and Greninja both them aside to help one another out. When they put their flaws aside, Ash and Greninja perfected the form. After that, Ash and Greninja made amends for their actions, which led their bond growing stronger than ever before. When Squishy and Z-2 asked him for his help in defending Kalos, Ash decided to not only have Greninja go with them on their mission but to also keep him safe from danger, after Team Flare captured them and tried to use them for their plans. Before going their separate ways, Ash told Greninja that they'll always be connected with each other no matter what. They then they bid each other farewell. However, Ash did reunite with Greninja as he asked it for help in training one of his current Pokémon and worked side by side with it once again. Unfortunately, Ash and Greninja went their separate ways again but not before bid each other farewell and hope to see each other again one day.
Talonflame[]
Talonflame was the second Pokémon Ash caught in the Kalos region. Ash has known Talonflame since it was a Fletchling. They have a very good relationship with each other as Ash used Talonflame a lot in his Gym Battles. After evolving into Fletchinder and Talonflame, Ash was proud of its growth. When Talonflame was in danger, Ash risked his own life to protect it. Ash left Talonflame with Professor Oak when his Kalos journey ended but knows he'll see it again whenever he comes to visit. Also, Ash have Talonflame help him sometimes.
Hawlucha[]
When Ash first meet Hawlucha, he was impressed with his way of battling. Seeing him struggle with one of his moves, Ash offered to help Hawlucha and they train to perfect it, which worked. After helping him, Ash offered Hawlucha a spot on his team, to which Hawlucha accepted, thus becoming the third Pokémon he caught in Kalos. Ash and Hawlucha are very close with each other. After his Kalos journey concluded, Ash left Hawlucha with Professor Oak but knows he'll be waiting for his return when he visits Pallet Town. Also, Ash called upon Hawlucha from time to time.
Goodra[]
Goodra was the fourth Pokémon Ash caught in the Kalos region. Ash has known Goodra since it was a Goomy. Upon hearing its status as the weakest of all Dragon-type Pokémon, Ash wasn't sure to call it that type of Pokémon but realize that it wasn't weak at all, after it saved him and two of his Pokémon from Team Rocket. Seeing that Goodra wanted to become stronger like him and Pikachu, Ash offered Goomy a spot on his team and they formed a close relationship with each other. After evolving into Sliggoo and Goodra, Ash succeeded in making it stronger. When they return to Goodra's home, Ash told it to stay at its home so it can protect it from the danger of other invading Pokémon. Ash ended up visiting it later on and asked Goodra to join him in the Kalos League. After the League was over, Ash bid Goodra farewell and promised to always be friends till the end.
Noivern[]
Ash has parent and child relationship with Noivern as Hawlucha found him when he was an Egg. After hatching into a Noibat and had trouble flying, Ash offered to help with its learning. Ash then suggested in having it join him and his team, to which Noibat accepted as he didn't want to leave Ash. When Noivern, (during its time as a Noibat), wanted to prove himself, Ash understood and didn't get in the way of his choice. After evolving, Ash was very proud of Noivern and was happy how strong he became. Ash left Noivern with Professor Oak once his journey through Kalos ended but knows he'll reunite with it whenever he comes home for a visit. Also, Ash has called on Noivern for help sometimes.
Biography[]
Pokémon the Series: XY[]
Ash traveled to the Kalos region to compete in the Kalos League and to continue his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master. Ash gained new traveling companions in the siblings Clemont and Bonnie, and later reunited with his childhood friend Serena, who still remembered him helping her a long time ago and would travel with him as well. Despite being childhood friends with Serena, who has a crush on him, Ash had no memory of their relationship until she showed him the handkerchief he used to mend her knee when they were little kids. Ash caught two new Pokémon with his first one being a Froakie, and followed by a Fletchling.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Ash faced Alexa's sister Viola, the Gym Leader of Santalune City, who specialized in Bug-type Pokémon. During their battle, Ash faced difficulty against Viola's Surskit, who gained an advantage over Pikachu by freezing the arena, turning it into an ice field. Ash decided that what needed improving was his Pokémon's balance, and with Alexa's help, engaged in special training designed to combat this flaw. Clemont also tried to help using one of his latest devices, but the machine backfired and exploded. In a rematch, Ash ultimately defeated Viola and claimed the Bug Badge, his first badge from a Kalos Gym.[4][5] Finding out about Clemont's status as the Lumiose City Gym Leader, Ash and Serena offer to help him get his gym back from the control of one of Clemont's faulty inventions. After retaking his gym and reprograming his invention, Ash told Clemont he'll battle him after he receives three more badges.[7] Sometime later, Ash and his friends met a ninja Trainer named Sanpei, who helps Ash's Froakie improve it's speed.[8] Ash battled against the Cyllage City Gym Leader Grant and his Rock-type Pokémon. Having seen Grant defeat Viola at the Battle Chateau, Ash sought a way to defeat Grant's Rock Tomb. When he faced Grant, this ended up becoming Rock Tomb Climb, the use of which earned Ash his second Kalos Badge, the Cliff Badge.[9] Later, Ash caught a Hawlucha as one of his new Pokémon.[10] Some tie later, Ash battles Moria, a Sky Trainer who specializes in Sky Battles, and her Talonflame. During the battle his Fletchling evolved into a Fletchinder and won.[11]
At Professor Sycamore's Pokémon Summer Camp, Ash and his friends met Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno. He later had an ice-breaker battle against Tierno's Squirtle with Froakie and lost. After spending a good time at the Pokémon Summer Camp, Ash went to Shalour City and battled Korrina, a Gym Leader who previously traveled with Ash and his friends in order to help her understand Mega Evolution with her Lucario. Despite a failed attempt of using Tierno's dancing strategy, Ash managed to win his third Kalos Badge, the Rumble Badge.[12][13][14][15][16][17]
Soon after, Ash teamed up with his ninja friend Sanpei and battled against Saizo and his Barbaracle. During the battle, his Froakie evolved into a Frogadier and won the battle using its newly learned Aerial Ace move.[18] Later, Ash and co. encountered a wild Goomy who had fled its home on the back of a Swanna. The Goomy was frightfully timid, even being scared of Dedenne. After taking some time to care for it, Ash and the others discovered, using one of Clemont's inventions, that Goomy's home had been attacked by Bug-type Pokémon, which left the poor creature traumatized, and possibly having some deeper issues. Wanting to help it, Ash invited it to travel with him. Delighted, Goomy accepted, becoming Ash's fourth new Pokémon.[19]
Finally arriving in Coumarine City, Ash had to first deal with Team Rocket trying to kidnap the Vanillite evolutionary line. In searching for Vanillite, its evolved forms had covered the city in ice, which was stopped by the Coumarine Gym Leader Ramos. After dealing with the three Ice-type Pokémon, Ash then faced down Ramos in his Gym battle, after enduring sitting through tea and helping the old man water and weed his garden. During this time, Ramos saw Ash impatiently yanking out weeds without a second thought and slowed him down, telling him that if he rushes, he will miss the important things. Ash later had to apply this lesson in the Gym battle: Figuring his Type-advantaged Fletchinder would easily win, Ash had to endure both it and Hawlucha succumbing to Ramos' Weepinbell's Poison Powder; Ash managed to defeat Weepinbell with Frogadier before facing down Ramos' Gogoat. While Frogadier was surrounded by a torrent of Gogoat's Razor Leaf, Ash remembered what the older man had told him about missing the important things. Using this lesson, Ash slowed himself down and was able to guide Frogadier more effectively; he won the battle, and the Plant Badge, and celebrated his fourth Kalos Gym victory.[20][21]
Ash and the gang later heard about an annual festival in Coumarine City, which is a holiday where Trainers give gifts to their Pokémon. Ash agreed to go with Serena to shop for possible gifts for their Pokémon, but later went off alone as he wanted his gift to be a surprise. To Serena's disappointment, Ash frequently ran off during their time together to see if a gift would be good to give his Pokémon, or later when he finally found out what to get them. Between these two moments, Ash ended up winning a blue ribbon from the monorail company. After dealing with Team Rocket yet again, Ash and his friends gave their Pokémon their gifts. For his Pokémon, Ash had done the simple thing and gotten them all a nice bounty of berries. Later, while watching the fireworks, Ash took Serena completely by surprise when he handed her a gift from himself, saying it was because of her that he was able to find a gift for his Pokémon.[22]
While traversing the Lumiose Badlands, Ash and co. happened upon a wounded Spoink. After Clemont gave it medical aid, it led the gang to an oasis where it lived that had been taken over by a rogue Grumpig that was being manipulated by Team Rocket, who used the Spoink as leverage to force Ash to hand over Pikachu. Goomy escaped and faced down Grumpig, but was losing for a time. When Grumpig was about to hit Goomy with an Iron Tail, Ash intercepted the attack and took it to the chest in Goomy's stead. Moved by Ash's willingness to protect it from danger at his own expense, Goomy evolved into Sliggoo and defeated both Grumpig and Team Rocket with its newly learned Dragon Breath attack.[23] Later, the gang happened upon the Lumiose Power Plant. Team Rocket had hijacked the plant and were using its microwaves to control Electric-type Pokémon, including Pikachu, Dedenne and Luxio. After the ordeal was over, Ash, Serena, and Bonnie temporarily bade goodbye to Clemont, who wished to return to Lumiose City to train and become stronger so that he could give Ash a worthy Gym battle.[24]
As time went by, Ash reunited with his rival from Pokémon Summer Camp, Tierno. They proposed a practice battle in order to help Ash get stronger for his promised battle with Clemont, but it was interrupted when Team Rocket showed up and captured their Pokémon. However, while battling Team Rocket, an explosion causes a wild fire which engulfed around Ash and the others. Sliggoo, who was determined to not let its Trainer meet the same traumatizing fate, used a very powerful Rain Dance to douse the fire, evolving into Goodra in the process. After blasting Team Rocket off with its newly learned Dragon Pulse attack, Ash and Tierno resumed their practice battle, which resulted in Ash winning the match.[25]
Later, after arriving in Lumiose City, and after resolving a crisis concerning Clembot, Ash and Clemont faced each other in their promised gym battle. Despite Clemont electrifying the field with his Luxray's Electric Terrain, Ash managed to win the battle and earn his fifth badge, the Voltage Badge.[26][27] After leaving Lumiose City, Ash and his friends came across Goodra's old home in the wetlands. There, Ash learned about Goodra's home being taken over by a Blue Flower Florges and her army of Bug-type Pokémon. Goodra challenged Florges to a battle for leadership, which resulted in Goodra learning Ice Beam and winning the battle. However, the celebration was cut short when Team Rocket injured Goodra and blackmailed Florges into capturing Pikachu, Dedenne and Goodra's friend, Wooper. When Ash went off to save the Pokémon, he learned from Team Rocket that Florges had pinned the blame on the Pokémon for draining the water and was trying to save her sick child, a Blue Flower Floette. After resolving the crisis and saving the wetlands from Team Rocket, Floette was successfully cured, and Goodra and Florges made a truce, bringing peace to both sides at last. Ash decided to leave Goodra in the wetlands so it could be happy with its friends and serve as their protector.[28][29]
Shortly after, Ash and his friends made it to Laverre City and met Sawyer, a young Trainer who knew Clemont from when the latter was training for Ash's battle. During their time together, Ash and Sawyer had a Double Battle, but were interrupted by the fashion show hosted by the Laverre City Gym Leader Valerie. As the boys watched the show, they were surprised to see Bonnie and Serena participating in it. At the end of the show, Valerie challenged Sawyer to a battle, which she easily won with her Spritzee due to its Fairy-type immunity to Bagon's Dragon-type moves.[30] After seeing that battle, Ash and Valerie faced each other in the Gym Battle for the Fairy Badge. Despite Valerie having a Type advantage and defeating Fletchinder with the effect of Spritzee's Trick Room, Ash came around from behind and surprised everyone by using his Hawlucha to destroy the Psychic-type move with its newly learned Bug-type move X-Scissor, before it knocked out Spritzee with High Jump Kick to give Ash the win.[31] While the gang was picnicking, Ash and his friends came across a Pokémon Egg Hawlucha found which hatched into a Noibat. Since Ash was the very first person Noibat saw, it imprinted on him and thought he was its parent. As the baby Noibat was a poor flyer, Ash called on Hawlucha and Fletchinder to act as its mentors. After saving both Hawlucha and Noibat from Team Rocket, Ash offered to take Noibat with him to help it learn how to fly which it eagerly accepted, becoming a new member of Ash's Kalos team.[32] Meeting up with Trevor again, Ash and friends went with him to meet Moltres, as Trevor wanted to take a picture of it. However, Ash and friends had to calm Moltres down as it believed they were enemies. Ash wanted to go help Fletchinder, who was hurt pretty bad from one of Moltres attacks, but Trevor, Pikachu and Frogadier stopped him. When Moltres turned its attention towards them, Ash and his friends witness Fletchinder evolve into Talonflame while protecting them from Moltres. Ash almost got himself killed when he jumped into the lava to save Talonflame but Frogadier saved them just in time. After being pulled up, Ash was scolded for his reckless actions but his courage impressed Moltres then left. Ash told Talonflame that they have a lot of work to do with Pikachu and Frogadier agreeing with them.[33] When they got to Anistar City, Ash and Frogadier met Olympia, after winning a brief battle with Carrie, she read his memories and along with seeing a vision of it gaining a new power, she revealed that at the Froakie breeding facility, as a Froakie, he preferred being alone to train instead of socializing with the others. When he was asked to join, he politely refused, which was then met with him getting attacked by rest of the Froakie. This made him distant towards others despite doing good, and it wasn't until Ash showed him love that made him finally connect to a Trainer that understood him.[34] Ash used Frogadier along aside Talonflame in a Gym Battle against Olympia and her male and female Meowstic, defeating them both and giving Ash the Psychic Badge.[35]
Pokémon the Series: XYZ[]
Shortly after as the group head towards Snowbelle City in "From A to Z!", the group comes across a mysterious Pokémon, dubbed Squishy by Bonnie, who was being pursued relentlessly by the villainous organization, Team Flare, prompting the group to put Squishy under their own protective custody.[36]
Eventually, they come across Sanpei's hometown as they get involved in a conflict, during which Frogadier evolves into Greninja, and, using the strong bond between it and Ash, obtains a powerful new form which rivals even the power of Mega Evolution. This form is later called "Ash-Greninja".
Ash eventually met Alain, who was intrigued by Greninja's new form. Ash later battled with Alain and his Charizard, and despite putting up a good fight, he lost. After the battle was over they became friends and rivals.[37] Later, Ash's Noibat evolves into Noivern when both of them along with Pikachu and Hawlucha got involved into helping a rampaging Zapdos calm down.[38] Ash and Alain faced off again in a more even battle while trying to figure out the mysterious power his Greninja had been using since it evolved. However, when Greninja pushed too hard on using its form, Ash collapsed to the ground and Alain immediately called off the battle. While unconscious, Ash has a dream where Greninja was leaving him. Once he regained consciousness, Ash realizes that he and Greninja have to be more careful while using that form. Little did he know, Ash was slowly letting his longtime fear of losing his Pokémon family get to him.[39]
Ash honors Diantha's request for a battle after training. However, despite Greninja finally managing to reach its final form of the Ash-Greninja technique and gaining the upper hand against Diantha's Gardevoir, Ash pushed too hard on using the Ash-Greninja form, and passed out again. Once he regained full consciousness, Ash vowed to fully master Greninja's form.[40] Later, Ash meet up with Sawyer again and they have another battle. At the end, Ash, who feared passing out during a battle again, lost due to Greninja failing to use the Ash-Greninja form and leaving Greninja open. Ash, who was slowly losing his way due to letting fear get the best of him, was not only feeling doubtful in mastering the form but he also has himself wondering as to what he was doing wrong.[41]
When Ash and his friends finally arrive in Snowbelle City, they met up with the Gym leader, Wulfric, and Ash challenged him to a battle in hopes of getting his final badge. During the battle, his Pokémon suffered a huge amount of damage due to the hailstorm caused by Abomasnow's Snow Warning ability and Avalugg's Ice Body ability along with Ash getting too impatient. After losing the battle, Ash was approached by Wulfric as tells him that he may have train his Greninja well but he also explains as to what he been doing wrong in perfecting the Ash-Greninja form was because he didn't have enough faith and trust in their bond. Hearing Wulfric's words, Ash realizes why he had those issues and was left incredibly devastated for letting his fears get the better of him. After Sawyer left to go train for the league, Ash goes in to see Greninja and apologizes for what happened. Upon seeing how badly hurt Greninja was and blaming himself for losing the battle, Ash decided to go outside as he wanted to be by himself for a while despite being cold and really late at night. Before he left, Ash told his concerned friends, minus Bonnie due to her being asleep, that it was OK and he'd be back soon. After apologizing to Pikachu, who wanted to go with him for company, Ash goes off into the Winding Woods alone where he questions himself about his future in the Kalos League and as a Pokémon Trainer.[42]
While sitting on a log alone, Ash tried to get it together but couldn't. Still feeling upset and lost in his thoughts, Ash was visited and found by Serena, who decided to look for him out of concern for him. After apologizing to her for leaving on such short notices, Ash listens to Serena, who tries to cheer him up, saying that if something was troubling him he can always talk to her about it and would be happy to listen at anytime or anywhere whenever he wanted to open up to a friend. However, hearing Serena say that she knows how he feels as she'd been in his situation before then was about to remind him of her loss in the Pokémon Showcase, Ash gets up and yells at her as he tells her that she doesn't have a clue how he feels. After Serena, who was very shocked at his outburst, asked him to tell her about his problems, Ash told his friend that his issues were none of her business and to leave him alone then turns away frustrated. However, Ash settle down when he gets hit by a snowball in the back by Serena, who was angry and confused at his behavior. After turning his attention back to his friend, Ash listens when Serena, who realized that he had lost his way, told him that the friend she knows would always be energetic, takes leadership, tries his hardest, upbeat, never back downs and doesn't quit until its over. Ash ended up falling over when Serena throws two more snowballs at him while telling him that he wasn't being the friend she knows. After Serena told him to be himself again and left tearfully hurt, Ash thought about what his friend meant while feeling guilty for lashing out at her as he realized that she was only trying to help him get through his depression.
While pulling himself together, Ash had to seek shelter in a cave as a sudden blizzard forced him to. Ash spotted several Pokémon who were also seeking shelter and offers them to come in the cave with him. Hearing himself encourage the Pokémon to join him, Ash remembered the day when he took shelter under a tree when a rainstorm hit during his field trip in his childhood days. Ash was able to convince the Pokémon into joining him by telling them that they'll be a lot warmer in the cave. However, Ash saw a group of Spewpa, who were about to fall off a cliff during the storm. Ash tried to save the Spewpa but he ended up falling with the Spewpa down the ravine. Luckily, Ash was immediately saved by Greninja, who had been looking for him. However, Ash lost his grip on the one Spewpa he was holding as it started to fall off the cliff. Ash decided to let go of his fear, and Greninja managed to successfully synchronize their feelings in order to save the falling Spewpa, which got them to perfect the Ash-Greninja form in the process. After saving the Spewpa, Ash and Greninja made amends for their past actions. Ash understands, after being alone, the promise he made with Sawyer, how he wanted to get 8 badges faster, and how he really wanted to beat Wulfric, that Ash realized that he was very impatient and had completely forgotten how important being a Trainer really is. After the storm cleared, Ash and Greninja reunited with the others, who went looking for them, then they apologized to everyone for worrying them. When Serena, who felt bad for getting angry at him, attempted to apologies to him from before, Ash not only assured her that she doesn't need to say anything as he knows she was just trying to help but also thanked her for that as he told her that the words she said instantly snapped him out of his depression, which was also his apology to her for hurting her feelings. Upon returning to the Pokémon Center, Ash learned that the Kalos League will take place in Lumiose City soon, which reminded him of the place where he and Greninja first met. With his full confidence back, Ash and Greninja promised to start over again and went off to train for his rematch against Wulfric.[43]
Ash faced Wulfric in a rematch with Pikachu, Talonflame, and Greninja, and even with the surprise of Abomasnow being able to Mega-Evolve, he emerged victorious, earning him his eighth and final Kalos Gym Badge.[44] After visiting Goodra, Ash and co. made their way back to Lumiose City for the Kalos League. After making it to the semi-finals, Ash brought Goodra back in order to fully fill out the requirement for a full party of six Pokémon.[45][46][47] Ash defeated Sawyer in the semi-finals and was prepared to face Alain in the finals, but was approached by Lysandre, Team Flare's leader. While talking to Lysandre, who was interested to know about his and his Greninja's abilities, Ash explained to him about his Bond Phenomenon power. After Lysandre asked him to meet back up with him once the league was over, Ash agreed, although he and his Pokémon are unaware of the destruction and devastation that was about to occur.[48]
Ash and Alain engaged in their fierce Full Battle, with Alain eventually being victorious. Afterwards, Team Flare attacks with Z-2 under their command.[49][50] After meeting up with Serena, Clemont and Bonnie, who tells him that Squishy went off to Prism Tower, Ash leaves with Alain to find Mairin. Once they found her, Ash and Alain were blocked by the vines which were growing like crazy. After Team Flare shows up, Ash assumes they were here to try to take Squishy again but to his surprise they were here to capture him instead. Ash not only gets confused as to why they were after him but he also gets betrayed when he finds out that Alain has been working for Team Flare. Ash tried to leave with Alain but all he did was resist his grip from his hand and did nothing to help him when he got knocked out by Celosia's Drapion's Confuse Ray. After being knocked out into unconsciousness, Ash and Pikachu were captured as they were put in restraints then taken to Prism Tower along with the rest of Ash's Pokémon. Ash and Greninja were intended to be use by Lysandre as he wanted to use their Bond Phenomenon for his plans while their friends, Ash's other Pokémon, were used as hostages for both of them. After regaining consciousness, Ash finds himself floating in midair with the restraints then tries to break free from them. Seeing Greninja, unconscious, in the same restraints and hearing Pikachu waking up, Ash realizes that his Pokémon have been captured as well then asks them if they're all okay but Pikachu, who just regain consciousness right after he did, was the only one to respond while the others were still out unconscious at the time. Hearing Lysandre greeting him, Ash turns his attention to both him and Alain then asks them what's going on while asking to let them go. After Lysandre refuse to release them, Ash with Pikachu see Z-2 that's under Team Flare's control then turns to Alain and asks him what's this about. Later, Ash and Pikachu witness Squishy transform where they realize that their friend is also a Zygarde.[51]
After his other Pokémon regain consciousness, Ash with Pikachu both protested and defended Squishy when Lysandre tells them that their friend will soon be under their control as well. Ash tries to get Alain to say something but he was still silent to him. Later, Ash was listening in when Lysandre explains his reasons as to why he had Alain collect Mega Evolution energy. While hearing his frustrations, Ash, who knew in his heart that he was still his friend despite everything he has done, came to realize that Alain didn't know anything about Lysandre's true plans as he never meant to betray anybody then sees that his only intentions were to help Mairin and her Chespin. Later, Ash was told by Lysandre that he wanted his ability to use Bond Phenomenon thus he sent two mini devices to control him and Greninja while their friends, Ash's other Pokémon, could only watch in shock along with looking worried. However, hearing Pikachu voices, Ash and Greninja fight back then tells Lysandre that he will never control them as they will never change. While still resting Team Flare devices, Ash was telling Alain that he didn't know what happen to him but he had to stop all this now. Also, Ash told Alain that he didn't care about what he's done and believes in the friend he knows. Ash tells Lysandre that he really cares about this world while asking him for a battle then used Bond Phenomenon to break free from his restraints with Greninja. After breaking free, Ash was about to collapse on the floor from the breakout but Alain got up there in time to catch him then thanked him for bringing him into his senses. Thanks to Alain breaking Pikachu and the others out of their restraints with the help from his Charizard, Ash and everyone were ready to battle Lysandre. During the battle, Pikachu, Hawlucha, and Noivern were able to defeat Lysandre's Pyroar, but then later in the battle, Lysandre's Shiny Mega Gyarados was able to defeat Ash's other Pokémon except for Pikachu and Greninja. Just when they were having a hard time, Malva lent a hand, then Ash gave Lysandre a lecture which impressed both Malva and Alain with his wisdom making Lysandre think he's naive. Ash, Alain, and Malva were able to defeat Lysandre, but he tells them he's not done and takes a leap of faith. Later, he did everything in his power to stop the Giant Rock and save Mairin's Chespin with Alain and in doing so, the Giant Rock stopped. But Lysandre showed up to try to destroy them. Thanks to the efforts of Pikachu, Greninja, and Alain's Charizard, they were able to destroy the control device on Lysandre's arm so Zygarde could destroy the Giant Rock Zygarde and finish Lysandre once and for all. Ash and everyone watch the sun rise as there is a new day ahead.[52][53][54][55]
After Team Flare's evil ambitions were finally put to an end, Ash plans on heading back to Pallet Town so he can start his training over from zero. But before doing so, he and his Pokémon received Honor of Kalos medals for his heroic efforts against Team Flare.[56]
After saying good-bye to Goodra in the marshlands, Ash and friends were heading back to Lumiose City. But on their way back Ash sensed something then Greninja popped out of his Poké Ball sensing the same thing Ash is just before a strange plant erupts from the ground, attacking the group with Ash assumed that it was Team Flare's doing. Ash and Greninja activated the Ash-Greninja form with Bond Phenomenon. Ash and Greninja see that there's red energy in the plant and Greninja destroyed the plant with Water Shuriken. Suddenly, Xerosic, the head scientist of Team Flare, arrived and began stealing Zygarde Cells with his Malamar. When he explained his plan of creating Neo-Team Flare, he abducted Clemont and drove away, believing he could use his intelligence as part of his plan. Ash commanded Greninja to follow the vehicle and break into it to retrieve Clemont. However, Greninja ended up getting caught when he accidentally steps on a twig. Xerosic attacked Greninja and retreated, but Greninja went under his vehicle. As Xerosic starts to fly away in his invisible jet, Greninja held onto the wing and Ash told it to wait there. Ash, Serena, and Bonnie attempted to jump on the jet, but ended up falling off course. However, Greninja managed to save them with his tongue scarf. When they made it inside, they managed to find Clemont. Ash was horrified when it seemed that Clemont is being controlled by Xerosic's Mega Evolution energy ray. However, it was revealed that Clemont placed a microchip on his head to prevent himself from being controlled. Ash battled alongside of Clemont and defeated Xerosic's Crobat. After Xerosic was defeated and arrested by Officer Jenny, another plant sprouted from the ground and attacked the group again. Luckily, they were saved at the last minute by Squishy. Squishy then took Greninja and the others to meet up with Z-2. The two Legendary Pokémon told Greninja that the plants that attacked them was negative energy that was left behind from the Team Flare crisis. They knew that Greninja was gifted with the ability to sense anything in different locations and asked him if he can lend them his strength during their mission. After recalling the times they've had together in their journey, Ash and Greninja gave one final handshake and hugged each other, knowing that even when they are apart, they will always be connected, hoping they will see each other again soon.
Greninja accepted Squishy and Z-2's request and the three Pokémon waved good-bye to Ash and his friends as they walked away into the forest together.[57]
With his journey in Kalos over, Ash bids farewell to his friends before departing for Pallet Town in Kanto. He soon arrives home where his mom was waiting for him.[58]
