Armarouge (グレンアルマ, Gurenaruma?) (ARM-uh-roozh[1]) is a Fire/Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IX. It is exclusive to Pokémon Scarlet, its Pokémon Violet counterpart is Ceruledge.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Armarouge is a tall humanoid Pokémon that resembles a knight. It wears a suit of armor that is primarily golden yellow with a red streak across the armor's chest area. It also has rounded pauldrons that can be moved to its hands to resemble a cannon. Its body is primarily black with dark red sections on its knees and wrists and light red sections on its hands and feet. Armarouge also dons a black helmet, which covers most of its face, with a petal-like pattern on it. Its eyes are red with yellow flame-like protrusions emitting from its pupils. It also sports two spike-like protrusions coming from the sides of its head, resembling ears. A large flame also flows from the top of its head, resembling a knight's helmet plume.

Behavior[]

Armarouge will challenge opponents head-on, even if they appear to be stronger, and believes in fair fights between Pokémon. Armarouge's armor once belonged to a distinguished warrior and is also the source of its psychic energy used for Psychic-type moves. Their sturdy armor also makes for a good defense while they attack opponents with high firepower. By shifting their pauldrons to their hands, they can make perform a cannon-like attack in which they put their hands together and shoot out fire.

    Trivia[]

    • Armarouge shares its base stat total with Ceruledge; the only difference is that both have different stat value distribution (Armarouge's strongest stats are Special Attack, Defense, and HP while Ceruledge’s strongest stats are Attack, Special Defense, and Speed).

    Origin[]

Armarouge's armor and flame plume may make them based on armor worn by European knights; this is also evident by the fact that Armarouge live by a code of honor and chivalry just like a knight. This origin might also reflect the legend of the Spanish knight Wilfred the Hairy, who was known to be descended from French ancestry, as well as being depicted wielding a golden armor and shield that were both marked in red by the emperor Charles the Bald to indicate Wilfred's bravery; the red markings on Wilfred's golden armor and shield also reflects Armarouge's red and yellow color palette.

Armarouge might also be inspired by jinn, humanoid fire spirits of Arabic folklore that are often depicted tossing fire balls at other beings. Its ability to form a cannon via fusing its pauldron armor is a reference to howitzers and sci-fi media depictions of arm cannons.

    Etymology[]

Armarouge may come from "armadura" (the Spanish word for "armor"), "maroon" (a dark red color), and "rouge" (the French word for "red").
