Appletun (Japanese: タルップル, Hepburn: Taruppuru) is a grass/dragon-type introduced in Generation VIII. It can also Gigantamax into Gigantamax Appletun.
It evolves from Applin when a Sweet Apple is used on it. It is Flapple's counterpart.
Biology
Physiology
Appletun is a dragon-apple pie hybrid. Its body is mostly green with a yellow underside and lower jaw. Its eyes as Applin are now sitting on top of its draconic head and are flapped down by a round piece of apple skin. Its back is shaped like an apple pie with a criss cross design and 2 apple leaves in the center.
In its Gigantamax Form, it and Flapple appear to become distorted versions of their pre evolution, Applin. Its head comes out with a dragon shaped snout, but apple skin still covers its nose. The apple it resides in have custard covering them and their tail sticks out the bottom.
Behavior
It wafts a sweet aroma, like Bounsweet. However, it uses the Sweet Scent to lure Bug type Pokémon to eat. These rotund creatures are quite mild-mannered, spending much of their time lazing about in branches or at the base of trees. At a first glance, resting Appletun may seem like sitting ducks when it comes to predators. The very insects they attract to prey on, however, will actually defend Appletun and their delicious nectar fiercely. In some areas, Appletun nectar is harvested and used to bake a variety of different pastries. These sweet treats are especially popular in the autumn.
Its Gigantamax nectar serves as both good offense and defense. The nectar can be used to drown enemies and shield itself from damage.

Evolution

Trivia
- Appletun and Flapple are the only Pokémon to have the same Gigantamax form.
- Ironically, Appletun is weak to bug types in game despite the Pokédex saying it feeds on them.
Origin
Appletun is based on a dragon and an apple pie. It is also based on the Lindwurm, a green, serpentine dragon that lives inside of mountains. Its design may also take inspiration from turtles, tortoises, or possibly even camels (the "pie" part may be interpreted as a hump; its hidden ability, Thick Fat, may be in reference to camels storing fat in their humps). It may also be based on the Ladon, a dragon from Greek mythology that guarded golden apples. It may also be based on the tale of Bel and the Dragon, in which a dragon bursts open after eating a cake.
Compared to Flapple which is more about metamorphosis of bugs, Appletun is instead a result of the apple conflating with the bug, which is Applin, into a different creature entirely. Its concept of being a fusion is likely based on the Passiflora foetida L. family, which is known for luring and preying on unsuspecting insects into their traps with the receptacles attached to their fruits, and their fruits are also commonly served as treats for children. It was additionally imported into Europe, including England which is the inspiration for Galar, during the 17th century.
While in its Gigantamax form, it resembles a caramel apple or some other form of sweet treat.
Etymology
Appletun comes from "apple", "ton", and possibly "turnover" (a type of pastry which commonly uses apples as a filling). It may also come from "-tun", an old suffix meaning housing or enclosure.
Its Japanese name, Taruppuru, comes from tarui (sluggish), tappuri (plenty), "tart", and "apple". It may also incorporate taru (Japanese for "barrel", as in a barrel of apples).
