After Black bumped into Andy after calling if any trainers would battle him, he gladly accepted his challenge. At first glance, he seems like a very experienced man, he has a Andy's Blitzle, Cottonee and Roggenrola. However, after he lost a Triple Battle against Black due to himself getting thirsty after the heat from Tep, the truth comes out. Andy only pretends to be confident when he battles because he is a lousy trainer. For twenty years, he's been trying to collect eight Gym Badges and enter the Pokémon League, but in the end he always gave up partway and ended up just being a spectator watching the trainers who made it. Now all he does is wait for trainers on Route 1 to challenge. Suddenly, the bush catches on fire from Tep's Flame Charge earlier. Black uses Musha to figure out what to do. Then he had Andy tell his Cottonee to use Cotton Spore to absorb the water he created with a splash. After Black revealed that Cottonee was the one that actually spread the fire, Andy gets furious. But Black told him that Cottonee was just trying to overcome its weakness to fire for its own trainer. Andy forgave Cottonee and learns about Black's relationship with his Munna. After Andy joined Black in his usual loud pledge to win the Pokémon League, they went their separate ways.
In Cold Hard Truth, Hiker Andy and his Cottonee arrive at the Pokémon League as one of the trainers Black met on his journey to face the Seven Sages in battle during Team Plasma's attack and rescue the captured Gym Leaders. After they succeed, Andy helped defeat the Team Plasma Grunts who attacked.
