Remember you can catch any of these starters post game at wild zone 20. some good early game choices to make are
1. getting the red canari plush you will automatically get this item while doing main mission 5 this will passively increase the amount of EXP gained
2. if you want a strong early game Pokemon pick heracross for just and all around decent pokemon, pikachu for strength against water and flying types early game, or gastly for a strong early game ghost type also the flectchling line for a strong flying type
3. take advantage of the side quest to get the Kalos starters this will let you pick three other starters from the Kalos region these starters are charmander, squirtle, and bulbasaur. you can get them by completing the "a call from Mable" side quest.
