Ok so I don't actually remember the last time I made a real post on the DB! It's 2 AM but that Shiny Emboar post got the gears in my brain turning so lemme just talk a bit to get a lil more activity in
Subject #1: Gengar
Possibly the most infamous of the bad shinies aside from maybe Garchomp (who is Spoilers: Coming up soon!), Gengar is actually a tragic victim of the Great Gen VI Sprite Desaturation™.
Up until Gen 6, Gengar had a pretty noticeable shiny. Gengar's regular palette was more vivid back in the day which let it stand out the pale gray of the shiny. I really like the Gen 2 and 3 sprites for shiny Gengar, especially 2's with those purple eyes.
Then the Great Desaturation. In the transition to 3D, a lot of Pokémon became a lot paler for some reason. This really hurts Gengar since now its shiny and regular colors are almost the same compared to before. It's pretty sad, seeing how a shiny that I thought looked pretty good originally become so bad.
My personal fix would be to give Shiny Gengar their original color palette from Gen 2. I think it becoming really dark would be awesome, and I'd finally be able to evolve my Shiny Gastlies into something cooler.
Or just give it its palette from its Mega/GMax forms. That'd be pretty cool too.
Subject #2: Regice
This was actually the catalyst of this post since I saw a reply to the Emboar post mentioning this as a bad shiny. And while it does deserve its rep for being barely different now, it wasn't always like that.
I'm coming in defense of Shiny Regice. Its shiny actually looks pretty nice to me; I think the bright blue works really well for it. It's honestly quite a nice shiny in the older generations. Funnily enough, Regice suffers from the reverse of the Great Desaturation. It started off pale, but then got brighter until it's began matching its shiny in color.
Regice's regular palette was originally a less saturated blue than we have now, so you could actually tell the difference pretty well in the older gens. Gen 5's a little more hairy, but it's atleast somewhat noticeable. And then the difference becomes essentially nonexistent past Gen 6.
To fix this shiny, I'd do one of three things.
a) Either give regular Regice its pale color back or give it to shiny Regice. It looked pretty cool with that pale color so why not give it to it? It'll match the rest of the desaturated crew anyways.
b) Make the shiny white. I think that would still give it an icy vibe while still being a noticeable difference.
c) Make the shiny resemble black ice (I swear I'm not rotted from Rainbow 6 Siege). So like an even paler color than it's regular palette was originally, probably approaching a gray color.
Subject #3: Garchomp
I was gonna go for a fourth subject (probably green shinies as a whole since they've had their fair share of haters) but I've realized that I've done a lot of yapping already. 90% of the people reading this have probably tuned out already because we all the attention span of a goldfish, so this is the final one and I'm keeping it brief.
Garchomp is a weird example. Let me just show what I mean (all of these tables are from PokémonDB btw!!)
(this bottom one of Gen 9 is from Serebii tho)
Somehow, this bad shiny's gotten better over the generations. Like if we look at Gens 4 or 5, I've got a sharp eye and I can barely tell the difference. It's really sad. However, in the newer generations it's a little easier to spot the difference. Gradually, the blue and the red have became a gray and an orange respectively. It's kinda cool to see a terrible shiny get less terrible with time. Still not great, but it's something.
Personally, I'd love to see Shiny Garchomp get the colors of either of its pre-evolutions, which both have superb shinies. Or they can keep it going on its current journey of becoming slightly more different each generation, which is kinda funny.
