So I'm gonna say this here before y'all scroll down without warning:

This post contains minor spoilers for "The Ideal Formula" story event that's currently going on in Pokémon Masters EX. If you don't want to spoil what happens in it, then first complete the event and come back here, or go ahead and read it's your choice really.

Oh and I'm definitely not mad on the fact that N has Zekrom and not Reshiram. (even tho in generations and the music video it showed N with Reshiram, thus confirming the canonicity of Pokémon White/White 2 Version, with Hilbert in both having Zekrom ugggghhhhh)

So I was playing Pokémon Masters and there was a new update that renames "Type Skills" to "Theme Skills". If y'all don't play the game, or do but dont have a great understanding of it (I did too ;w;), then I'll give a quick explanation before I get to the real point here,

A Theme skill has 3 main Categories, these being:

1. Type

2. Region

3. Trainer group

The "Type" category only (please correct me if I'm wrong) counts the primary type of your chosen Sync Pair. I think this, because if you put the Dragon type filter on cuz you're looking for a certain Electric/Dragon Type Sync Pair, it shows everyone who has the Dragon type as their Primary type. And if you put the Electric type filter, then it will show you the Electric/Dragon type sync pair you were looking for (#ProtectNSquad where you at)

The "Region" Category counts all Regions except Galar (which is a little weird cuz Gloria and Crowned Sword Zacian were added to the game recently).

The "Trainer Group" Category has 4 Sub Categories:

1. Main Character

2. Elite Four

3. Gym Leaders

4. Champions

The way Theme Skills work is considerably simple, kinda. I'll explain with some examples.

So you wanna take up a battle either to grind for some of that precious EXP or just cuz ya bored, you form a Team.

(Btw I'll be using the "Challenge N: Ultra hard" battle in the event for these example screenshots, and for those of you who are trying to do this battle, the "1 replays" thing goes away only when you complete the battle, so don't worry bout losing a few times, also the battle is playable once, and will become playable 24 hours after ya log in so do look out for that)

Example 1: Type Skills

You decide to use two Electric type trainers and one Fairy type because yes ( Battle Tip: Lillie and Clefable have a move called "Full Power" that can be used on a member of your team to power up their moves. My strategy is to use "Full Power" on Zekrom 2 separate times to power his move "Bolt Strike". One time to take out the Pidgeot on the opposing Zekroms right, and a second time to take out the Braviary(?) On the opposing Zekroms left. Cuz those two can't take the 'shock' of seeing two Zekroms, I'll see myself out) Then when you start the battle you'll get a small cutscene showing your Electric Type trainers saying that their Type Theme Skills are active because their both Electric Type Trainers (it doesn't literally say that but I wasn't sure how to describe it), notice that your Fairy type Sync Pair wasnt included because its type didn't match the other two sync pairs you had on your team.

Example 2: Region Theme Skill

Here you choose 2 Bug Type Trainers and one Fairy type. This time the cutscene will show all three of your team members, saying that all Trainers are from the same region and that the first two have Bug Type in common.

Example 3: Trainer Group

This one will be the same as the above ones except that there will one be difference saying that either 2 or all of your sync pairs are in the same trainer group.

1. Main Character

2. Elite Four

3. Gym Leaders

(Note: Both Cheren and Iris are Gym Leaders and from Unova so the cutscene will say that Region and Trainer Group Theme Skills are active.)

4. Champions

Read This.

Soooo about this one. The game doesn't actually register Steven Stone(Summer 2020)/Alolan Sandslash as a Champion sync pair, most likely cuz the normal Steven Stone/Metagross is the actual Champion Sync Pair and because of their 'mon regional differences. And Calem/Meowstic Male (why does he not have Chespin??????) also don't count as a Champion Sync pair either in-game, I just put em there cuz in generations Calem is canonically the new champion of Kalos.

I hope that unnecessarily long and complicated explanation helped y'all understand the actual point of this post. Yes we have not reached the actual point yet.

Remember how Iris/Haxorus is labelled under the Gym Leader category and not the Champions Category?

Yeah, I wasn't sure myself either when I first saw this. I was messing around and looking at Theme Skills seeing how many Sync Pairs I have under each category/sub-category and I noticed this little detail.

It's honestly a little weird to see that Iris/Haxorus isn't in the Champions Category, I mean she could have been in both categories right? But she isn't. Even tho "The Ideal Formula" (oh now we mention this event after a long time of writing) confirms that Iris is currently the new champion of Unova.

Here come the spoilers.

In the third Story Map, aptly named "The ones who bested Alder", you get from the prize pool after relentlessly beating those poor trainers over and over again for tokens, we see Bianca/Musharna and Iris/Haxorus giving N/Zekrom a tour of Pasio (while Hilbert/Samurott, Hilda/Emboar and Cheren/Stoutland look everywhere for N/Zekrom just cuz Hilbert wants to tell N something really badly)

We see this dialogue from N and Iris while Bianca is trying to book the Battle Arena for a bit,

Also did N eat a lampost or something?-

The event literally acknowledges the fact that Iris a Champion and that Alder is retired(???). Yet Iris didn't get a spot in the Champions Category.

Also funny story how I got Cynthia. There was recently a Spotlight Scout featuring Steven Stone/Metagross and Cynthia/Garchomp, me being a stan for Hoenn and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald said that I must have the Steven of Clan Stone with the All-seeing Gross of Metal in my army (I am a weird person) so I tried the Scout a lot. I somehow ended up getting Cynthia/Garchomp two times and not once got a glimpse of Steven :') jeez talk about Cynthia stealing the spotlight (pun not intended)
