What to expect: A chance meeting? A glint in the Moor of Iccirus. Unusual glittering amidst the bog. A sign of things to come...
One tiny sparkle amidst the tangle of moss and still waters.
I hope you enjoy today's decade-old story!
T'was a shiny Shelmet I encountered back during my first playthrough of White 1. My first gen 5 shiny. And also, the first time I even gave Shelmet any semblance if thought. It was the post-game at this point and I was dissapointed that my first shiny in this gen was... Shelmet... my younger self was more sad than glad, yet still proceeded to catch it. Obviously.
It was still a shiny.
But back then, I really wanted something different than a forgettable bug.
I was in for a rude awakening.
I decided to look up Accelgor.
I didn't like its default colors, finding it tacky.
Then I saw the shiny. Hooooo, thats sick!
The dark grey bandages and golden head made for a wicked combo of colors. (And to think this was a pallette swap!)
Then I saw that base Speed.
HOLY MOLY!!!
My jaw hit the floor as I started thinking of applications for him.
It looked cool, AND had insane speed?
INSPIRATION!!!
So, I started looking into how the heck do I evolve you!
All I find is that, to evolve: 2 Nintendo DS + Karrablast.
(Yeah, information was a bit vague before more detailed stuff was streamlined)
It took my friends and me a minute to decipher what this meant.
We tried trading Karrablasts back and forth but nothing.
Until we looked at Karrablast and it showed the same sequence but with Shelmet.
All 4 of us roughly facepalmed... we had to trade both mons TOGETHER!
We felt like a clown car of derps.
After trading and evolving, I was to trade back for it. But, dang it! My friend who helped me evolve it started teasing me.
"Oh, this is cool-lookin'. It'd be a real shame if I kept it xD"
I know she was teasing in good humor, but it still terrified me!
After getting it back, I began the grueling process.
Training it for use!
Among my highschool friends, only 1 other had pulled a shiny mon so far in gen 5. So it was great for showing off! I felt unique amongst the crew.
Accelgor had the benefit of being Naive at the time. (+Speed, -Sp.Def)
After full Speed investment, this dude was a ludicrously fast. (IVs were somewhat low, due to not being bred) Completely unmatched still, save for max Speed Ninjask and Deoxys Speed.
One key thing of note, was his Ability Hydration.
Now, in my school. Once hidden abilities were unleashed, The meta quickly adapted among people, which was Rain sweep, Sun sweep/stall or Sand Stall. And some who ran Bulky evasion stall, with Toxic, Burn, etc.
Accelgor fit this like a glove.
With Rest in Rain, I could fully heal, remove ailments, and Hydration to wake it up immediately. Although its defenses were shoddy. It did tank hits on slight occasions from lesser tier mons.
Eventually I dropped Rest for Focus Blast for an unexpected coverage option. Mostly for Tyranitar and the ever-present Excadrill. With Giga Drain to take a chunk out of Politoed.
But the biggest boon, was Double battles.
Most, if not all weather spammers used Drought Ninetales, and Drizzle Politoed, or Sand Stream Tyranitar.
Letting them get up weather was fine, especially against Sun.
But then, Accelgor would blaze past with his insane speed and put up Rain Dance manually, weakening incomming Fire, and boosting my partners. While the partner mon, Kingdra, Kabutops or Ludicolo would surgically remove their setter.
That was key!
Most people didnt want to sacrifice a move slot for Sunny Day or Sandstorm... so once their setter was removed. The swing of battle shifted for me tremendously.
This worked early on, but once people caught on to my shenanigans... they planned for it. Ninetales now ran Sunny Day on top of Drought, predicting my gimmick.
Some even running Choice Band outspeed and dispose of the shiny ninja beforehand.
But the fact people had to shift their style because of one player in highschool and his slug boi, spoke volumes of how disruptive Accelgor was, and the dependency on Weather.
Against a Rain mirror match though....
Yeah no, buddy got wiped xD.
He didnt see much use during 6th gen, because thats when I retired. Reapppearing in late gen 7 to vacation in Alola. But, now in 8th gen he has had a full power resurgence!
The vacation has ended, and he is back to shenanigans!
Mostly as a Raid mon for fun, consisering how inhospitable the meta in gen 8 has become. His old bag of tricks not so viable.
But, Ive already fixed him with Mints. And Hyper Training for the sake of maximization!
I was not dissapointed. It was totally worth it.
He just contracted Pokérus because... back then I didnt have the luxury of that boon... but that SPEED!
I could fix his moveset to make it better... since he now gets Water Shuriken... but I want to keep it as is, to uphold the legacy this ninja left behind in gen 5.
Out of respect to his past!
Now, this is a side note of me rambling but;
He does get something thing that has outclasses everything in 8th gen... and Im not talking about Calyrex Shadow Rider being even faster!
Something far greater!
Something that gives him more personality!
His little hopping animation for walking, almost as if he's stuck in a straight-jacket. Its funny.
But beyond that!
HIS RUNNING ANIMATION!!!
Since I started playing around in camp, I brought him along...
Only to find out, that, to run; HE SLIDES WHILE STRIKING THAT SAME EDGY POSE.
No emotion, no distraction. He asserts dominance by sliding!
This is the same in Isle of Armor overworld. He simply slides behind you at high speed without moving his feet, only cross-armed and focused.
I still dont know how I find this sliding dope endlessly amusing!
For those stilll reading, thank you making it this far! I know this was a lot of rambling about the old days...
But hopefully I was able to provide some entertainment to you!
I know the story wasn't as heartwarming as the JP Lycanroc. But they all cant be tear-jerkers.
May your legacy continue, Hydrated Mummy Ninja Slug! xD
We have new advetures for you to blitz past!
New foes to confound with your strange ninjitsu skills!
