PRELUDE
(No need to read this if it’s too long, but it does expand upon the lore. If you don’t want to read that right now, skip to PART I for the current setting)
They say that just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. That’s what Arceus made clear one year ago when it came down from the heavens and rained its Judgement upon mankind.
It didn’t go well, to say the least.
Arceus mysteriously disappeared after this massacre–nobody knows where it went. The massive cities that make up the region are in ruins, slowly being reclaimed by nature with few left that can upkeep them. Most of them have been overrun with wild pokemon, who have taken control with newfound power and no mercy.
And what about those who once thrived alongside their trainers?
Most have been slaughtered, if not worse.
There’s little room for them now. It’s an all-out war in a way, with few individuals remaining neutral in this game of life. It’s hard to adapt when everything you’ve known and relied on was taken away in the blink of an eye.
What is there to be done? Concepts of civilization and peace are rapidly fading away. You should just give up, because it’s every man for himself, which is not the way of life you’re used to.
But, on the other hand…
…what is there left to lose?
PART I
<LOCATION: Cygnus City>
Cygnus City harbors one of the few places left where pokemon can feel safe and find shelter: its own battle stadium. Not what you’d expect, but it’s been faring pretty well as a sanctuary for those who lost their human companions.
It has the sleek, futuristic look that many buildings do in this region. Surprisingly, it’s mostly intact, except for the fact that there’s a gaping hole in the roof, and that over the past few months, vines have grown to smother its walls. Not too bad for having to withstand an attack from Arceus itself, though.
To keep hostile wild pokemon out, a psychic barrier surrounds it and only lets certain individuals pass through. It’s controlled by the head of the sanctuary–an elderly Solrock who established the place a few days after the Great Judgement. You can’t help but notice that this barrier has been getting weaker every day… which isn’t terribly surprising. One old pokemon can only keep it up for so long, after all. But, it’s still worrying to think about what might happen when it finally breaks.
Let’s put these grim thoughts aside for now and make the best of the day. You recall that there’s supposed to be a meeting later–this time, some loony Ampharos wants to talk to everyone. It’s probably just another attempt at gathering a few folks to venture outside for supplies. Though a necessary task, it’s one that nobody wants to do; sometimes those that leave the sanctuary don’t come back. Nevertheless, you ought to listen out for the ring of the bell that calls everyone to the center of the stadium. Only then will you find out what it’s really about.
Hopefully something good.
